I think a large part of WoW's success comes from the fact that a lot of their subscribers came from battle.net who are very loyal to Blizzard. I think Warcraft was the perfect IP to turn into an mmorpg because almost all of its fanbase has computers capable of playing a modern mmorpg.
I know Warhammer is HUGELY popular, so is Star Wars, Harry Potter, Pokemon etc to the point where they have more fans than Warcraft. However, I doubt any of these IPs have even a quarter the amount of fans with computers powerful enough to run modern day mmorpgs as Warcraft does.
I think the only way to access the people who don't have powerful PCs is through the console. Even though a PC is by no means difficult for a person to setup, a lot of people still have trouble. Consoles are plug and play and I think it's a medium, maybe even the only one that could attract 5+ million subscriptions. The only other mmorpg on PC I can see getting those kind of numbers would be a Starcraft one.
BTW, I'm not some WoW lover, I absolutely detest the game. I'm a pre-cu SWG lover so I have no games to play

~491k beta apps
WAR tabletop game has been around for something like 27 years i think.
The fanbase for warhammer is HUGE. If they can get a good game they will have no problem getting large number of subs.
Hold on Snow Leopard, imma let you finish, but Windows had one of the best operating systems of all time.
If the Powerball lottery was like Lotro, nobody would win for 2 years, and then everyone in Nebraska would win on the same day.
And then Nebraska would get nerfed.-pinkwood lotro fourms

As pointed out, there are 491,000 people who applied for the beta. I am not sure that many of them consider themselves Warhammer Fans, but I think everyone is just looking for a MMORPG that is a decent alternative to WoW. Thus far the recent releases have fell somewhat short. A lot of hope has been placed on AoC and WAR to be a WoW alternative.

Awned: World of Warcraft (Lothar)
Torren: Warhammer Online (Praag)
On top of the fans that are established in the Warhammer community there are also plenty of fans of DAOC that will gladly move on to this game when it's released. You can expect a huge release for this game.

here's always plenty of people looking for a free MMO to play so I wouldn't put much stock on signups for a beta. It's all gonna depend on what state the game is in when the game gets released (or goes open beta if they do).
As for the Daoc crowd helping make it huge... *laugh*, Daoc's total numbers were insignificant at best ^^ (yes I played it till NF)
500k Beta sign-ups is a HUGE number. Most games are lucky if they get 100k beta sign-ups.
I don't have the numbers for NA, but EU WoW closed beta applications topped out around 350k.
"There is as yet insufficient data for a meaningful answer."
The tabletope game, and the RP game, are rather popular but that won't necessarily translate to subscriptions. Look at Dungeon and Dragons Online...
On the other hand, the Warhammer IP is very hot right now, with both Mark of Chaos and Dawn of War strategy games selling millions of copies
The problem with trying to predict if there will be a lot of subscribers to WAR is the tact that neither of the two games previously mentioned have anything to do with Mythic.
Blizzard has a reputation for impecabble quality, every single one of their games AND add ons was of superb quality and battle.net has millions of subscribers and all of this considering that most of blizzards games on battle.net are almost ten years old or older.
Blizzard had a huge advantage because of there reputation and their huge player base on Battle.net, and having almost complete market saturation. And most of that was by word of mouth...
I honestly dont't think that WAR will be as popular as WoW unless almost every media outlet and review site previews WAR and then starts saying glowing things (kind of like what happened with WoW
Warhammer-fans might be a bit different from those other IPs though. Many (if not most) Warhammer fans play the Table Top strategy game. Which is very, very expensive. Meaning that the fans of Warhammer generally will have a pretty good economy (or parents with a good economy ) and be able to afford the game and a PC to play it.

If you count all fat nerds from conventions, 30 yo virgin losers, leet kids, fat nerd losers again, jobless basement hobos, and some college students, you will get around 500-900k people in US alone. Yup, in my opinion it is HUGE.
You are a complete clown with Troll blood.
Say what you want about the fans of this game and their lives and the way they look but know this, there are a ton of them. The fanbase behind this game at this point is huge for where it is in development.
I am an average guy, average weight, average height, average job. I go out occasionaly and party, I mostly stay home and play MMO's. Myself, my wife, 3 of my brothers, both of my parents (45yrs+) and 13 of my close friends all play MMO's together...and were all in the same guild. I am by no meens jobless and I don't really approve of "Freeloaders" so I don't hang around with those who are.
ALL OF US ARE SIGNED UP FOR BETA. We plan on making a fresh guild once the game launches. If you think we are a bunch of super nerds thats fine. But your the one trolling this thread.

I have a good job, I graduated college, I go to the gym, I go out on weekends and party/socialize etc... but during the week, after work I have maybe 5-6 hours of "free-time" before I go to bed and during that time, I like to play games. I've been signed up for the WAR beta since I found out about Beta sign ups a very, very long time ago.
Am I a Warhammer tabletop fan? No. Never tried it. I did buy a "board game" once that was a Warhammer rip off, little armies of people on platforms that moved around a large grid-based battlefield... but that was a very long time ago. I even used to paint the one-color game pieces from some fantasy RPG-esque board games... something with a "Hero" in the title....
I am so interesting in WAR because of the game play and focus on fair, balanced, and meaningful PvP.
It is my foremost belief that this statement is entirely true. A lot of people have signed up for the Beta simply because of a little hype and Mythic has made very profound promises to be innovative for the MMO industry.
From my experience I find that the Warhammer Fan Base is growing and with the recent developments and hype of WAR, will continue to increase dramatically.
The true overall fanbase is hard to really narrow down but definitely increasing everyday. Games Workshop is doing a good job of increasing number of plastic miniatures in larger quantities making it easier to collect armies, thus increasing their market share within the hobby industry.
Hopefully the combination of cheaper table top models and the release of WAR will enable sheer Warhammer domination.
