currently playing ff11 for over 1,5 years now still enjoying it a lot partying get harder wen your getting higher up especialy with some classes but i would like to point out that some jobs are good for solo play but not for fast leveling beastmaster, rdm, whm, blm these classes can handle themselfs pretty good if you pay it right currently a friend of mine is blm level 75 and i have seen him solo decents and some time,s even tough,s witch is imposible for my class at that level (drk) so its not impossible to solo just a lot harder and recuire,s skill unlike wow witch anybody can bring it to level 60 in a month by solo, ing (no skill needed)

Right, because an online [multiplayer] game is all about soloing. I guess you should add most sports: you can't solo football, baseball, hockey, etc. You can practice, but you cannot play an actual game of those sports alone, so I guess they all suck to, right?

Yes, because the main thing we need to remember is just as in real life, some types of people [characters] cannot do things that others can, but that doesn't mean that they are less important. You said that White Mage can solo, and while I'm not trying to counter that, I'll use that and a Warrior for an example/analogy: The Warrior can solo things as far has his offense goes -- he can deal the damage, but he still needs a White Mage to keep him alive. True, the White Mage cannot defeat that enemy like the Warrior could, but he was still important. Just the same, Medics or Recon type people in both FPS type games or iRL are generally not considered as adepth in combat as the full soldier types, but they are nonetheless important to the overall combat. Simply not being able to solo doesn't mean that the at Job is worthless/weak or that the game isn't designed well, it just means that the purpose that that Job serves is not geared towards directly affecting the event, they are to influence them.
I agree here. These people that are saying it sucks just because you can't solo don't know the true definition of an MMORPG. In my opinion a big part of ALL MMORPGs, even D2, is meeting new people, and playing alongside thousands of other players from across the world. The key word here is MULTIPLAYER. FFXI just focuses more on teams and parties than other games. You know why? They're focusing more on the MULTIPLAYER aspect of the game.

Very nice description i completely agree with you. I only just got FFXI but already am being consumed by it...there is a lot of teamwork, but if there was none of that then there would be no point in it being online. It would be like playing a normal RPG like Morrowind

I'd like to add something: I read somewhere in this thread that in EQ he/she could solo while waiting for a group whereas in FFXI u can't do anything, just wait. Well I don't think that is the case because the game has alot of activities in it. For example,I fish while lfg and make money out of what I catch. Since money is a bit of a problem in FFXI in general because item prices fluctuate way too often one can craft or fish or mine while waiting for a group. And another thing: Lvling isn't slow in FFXI. You just need to know how to make a good group. If you just put together a group based on the "healer-n-tank-n-nothing-else" principle it gets u nowhere in the game. My character's main job is Monk and MNK's work well with Samurais because of the skillchains. But I also need an elemental spell caster (Black or Red Mage) to Magic Burst after the chain for more damage. So far I have a tank,a healer,an elemental spell caster, myself (a damage dealer) and a samurai (another DD). All I need now is one more member who can be anything depending on what the group and I want (or what is available lfg). I believe that similar principles exist in other MMOs as well. And if we r just looking to level really fast then there is no real reason to play an RPG in the first place because it will kill the fun in the long run.
Anyway,we went off topic in this thread as well! No,Square-Enix doesn't have FFXI available for download. You can only buy it.
There's a reason that FFXI is different from other MMORPGS, mainly because it's a Japanese game.
In Japan, the people place more emphasis on group success - the good of the people. To be successful you must work togther as a team to overcome more powerful foes. Whereas, in America, we look up to the solitary hero. Which is why games such as WoW have a large solo-play ability: it was the society as a whole admires.
I'm willing to bet that the majority of people who rip on group-oriented games are American. Either that, or you lack the patience and ability to sit through and play a game that requires actual though. Every death, every level, every job has some impact on your online alter-ego and those without the will to sit through that often quit early on.
OP: Get the PC discs - you can get FFXI, RotZ, and CoP for about 40$.
You can download FFXI from the Final Fantasy Offical site .. You can get a buddy code and serial for 30 days on ebay , or any other auction site. The Japanese auction sites give you the game , expansions and stuff , (including a stuffed catus) for 50.00 US and a buddy code so you can start today.
For those that are saying this game isnt any good because you cant solo easly.. MMORPG pretty much means you can solo but these MMORPG games arnt fun soloing, they are ment for you to have groups of people to fight, quest. ect. with.
And for those that are saying the monthly price is ridiculous.. This game is practicly the only mmorpg that has the lowest price.. WoW is 15 a month and WoW has to be the most easyest mmorpg out there.
I thought people played on-line rpg games so they can interact with other people? I could be wrong..... Well I played FFXI close to 4 years and got kinda stupid helping a friend and got banned. Didn't want to start all over because I had complished so much: bonecraft 103, ninja, war, thief, pally 75 and white, black, redmage, sam 60+ and have over 200mil gil not including gear. Lets just say I had almost everything minus HNM King drops. Also completed SEA mission and had over 150 ancient coins with boxer's mantle. Well to make the long story short, I tried other games, Titans, LIneageII, WOW, EQ2, few free item purchasing on-line RPG games and it was a dissapointment. After about me being away a year, thinking of going back to ffxi.
For people who are complaining about not able to find people to play: make your own group; I understand sometimes there are no people on-line but you should be sleeping too, trying to make a party at 2am in the morning. And if you don't want to make the party, watch TV or play on-line mini games, read the fourms, fishing while seeking. What I do is, instead of changing a job and start looking for the people, I search for the people then change my job and talk to them if they want to party. most difficult thing to find is tank and a healer, next refresher. after you find those people, rest is pretty easy but not always.
All I can say is you get what you paid for, and I think FFXI is the best over all game out there but not sure about EVE I heard alot of good things about it but not going to invest my time.
Like people have said FFXI is a good game minus waiting. So if you can do something while seeking party, then it should be really great.
Reply to the first poster- Ok guys, he obviousley hasnt played the game, he probably means where can he get ahold of something like a 7-14 day free trial, ex. Download and try. Sorry is this was already covered, didnt bother reading any other posts.
omg.. you're so full of it. When I first played the game, within my free 30 days I got to lv. 30 WHM and lv. 20 SMN, only reason that SMN was lv. 20 anyways was because I wanted to get all of the Avatars first. And I wasn't even an addict, probably played 11 hrs a week (7 days, not 5) so that roughly estimates to an hour and a half a day every day. And frankly, that's nothing at all.
But I will take into account why I lvled so quickly, I RPed a WHM. EVERY party needs/wants a WHM so finding a party after lv. 10 was rather easy. You will have a tough time starting out if you choose THF or MNK. WAR, BLM, WHM and RDM have a much easier time finding parties then the other basic classes.
