Eve Online reviewed in the New York Times

Read all about it:

I agree with most of what the reporter has to say. However, I believe Eve will outlast WoW, and I don't think BoB view themselves as evil.

Excellent article. I'll admit that my obsession is such that I routinely google "ccp eve online" into Google News to see what's that latest scoop :p (caught this one yesterday)

I especially liked their take on the major players in the War of New Eden

For at least a year the most powerful group in Eve has been an alliance known as Band of Brothers, a self-appointed evil empire with the stated objective of taking over the galaxy. Against them is arrayed a motley batch of self-styled freedom fighters with names like the Red Alliance (mostly Russian), Tau Ceti Federation (mostly French), GoonSwarm (mostly obnoxious) and the Interstellar Alcohol Conglomerate (mostly drunk).

As far as not considering BoB "evil", I wouldn't know what else to call someone who is bent on controlling everything and everyone, at least from the individual's perspective.

EVE got bad reviews in America but got fanatastic reviews in Europe and the UK, which i found weird but i guess we have different tastes and opinions.

"GoonSwarm (mostly obnoxious) and the Interstellar Alcohol Conglomerate (mostly drunk)."

^^ That line had me rolling.

Good review though.  Pretty accurate.  Though BoB doesn't really see themselves as an 'evil empire'.  And you are correct.  The way the devs have written EVE it's much easier for them to upgrade it over time the way they have than it is for WOW to do the same.  WoW will eventually fade as technology passes it by, just as every other MMO has.  CCP, however, has shown that they have the means, the will and the ability to continually upgrade EVE over time so that it 'stays with the times' technologically speaking.  With WOW there really is a limit to what they can do to improve the game.  Much like EQ, EQ2 and every other MMORPG out there WoW's graphics will slowly become outdated, new expansions may help but, over time, the game will lose it's allure to newer players.  EVE, on the other hand, with it's unique environment that is wildly addictive to those who enjoy it, will continue to grow.

No other MMORPG on the horizon even comes close to approaching EVE's depth and complexity.  For that reason and many more?  I think EVE is the one MMO currently on the market that has the staying power to continue to grow and develop indefinitely.

Actually, come to think of it - that does ring a bell.

I think those reviews are ~2003. I hope they re-review Eve for Trinity, and again when ambulation comes out. It will make interesting reading.

im american and i can tell you i love eve, yeah to some degree its a love hate relationship but in no game can i  have a open ended experience wher every action or behavior lies a consequence. every turn, could be my last, finding my self limping away in my pod or worse yet, cloned back in my clone bed getting my materials back together to form another starship for redeparture.

I must admit Eve does require a certain level of maturity, patience and intelligence, and willingness to learn.

its a huge steep learning curve, but you get so much satisifaction from learning what to do, the reward risk system is truly duaanting, but you gotta realize a huge reward usually belies a huge risk.

im nearing T2 armaments such as T2 armor harderners which i practically for the most part and T2 ships, I finally got T2 drones, and Rigged my ship, slowly but surely in about a month I should hvae T2 large railgun specialization which will be a long awaited goal i wanted to get to. with this new graphics upgrade the game will be even better with all the new features they are adding besides the beautiful eye candy. I can hardly wait til i get paid this dec 7th so i can resub. hope to see some of you cloners out there. good hunting!
