A SCI-FI Game, anyone???

Hi, I have had my fill of fantasy mmorpg (EQ, DAoC and Lineage 2) and want to do the Science Fiction "themes".  I have played SWG but left as I was mortified by the lack of developer interest in the melee professions (they were horrible in PvP and then a few changes were added and they became even worse and their are no indications this will get better.  After 6 months of ppl complaining and still nothing but the same delaying tactics.  I left SWG in January and here in July the same issues prevail.  It just wont get better and some ppl refuse to accept that.  I did and that is why I left!!  But enough on SWG, it has potential but not for me, not any more, ever!)

Now that I am done with that I am really looking for a Sci-Fi game that allows you to melee BUT it needs to be balanced.  I know that is a very hard thing to do but I hope something is out there.

I have heard lots of good things about AO but have never tried it.  Is that the only Sci-Fi game that has melee in it and a high rating?

In every mmorpg I have looked into, melee is the hard road. Mages can kill you easily before you can get near them. Missiliers can kill you easily before you can get to them. Mages and missiliers will probably still be able to kill you easily after you get to them. This applies to mobs and pvp. But especially pvp.

That is why I choose to play meleers. They aren't 'easy' to play. You may have fewer choices in attacks than others but you still have to survive the run-up as well as the actual battle.

Most powerlevelers are interested in only two things. How long does it take to be powerful enough to 'beat' the mmorpg. And what do they have to do to be more powerful then the next powerleveler.

I'll stick with melee and continue to explore and experience whatever virtual world I choose to spend my time in.

To me it sounds like you have, at least emotionally, if not logically, already gone over to the other side.

NCSoft is publishing Tabula Rasa.   I played Lineage 2 for a while but got bored too fast.  SWG was great until they made too many changes and stopped mid way through the combat patch.

In SWG I was a Master Brawler, Master Pikeman and dabbled in TKA, Fencer and Swordsman (defensive skills).  I was all about melee and that was my theme.  I would win every dual (not PvP encounter as they were usually gang bangs or drive by's).  I was able to use Warcry2 to great effect as well as lunge 2 which was the only and I mean only way to fight ranged ppl.  Well, SOE changed that so I could no longer use either one effectively and in the process made my defenses weaker with the caps (NO, i was not a pistoleer/fencer!!).  So, what could I do now??  Well, I could get killed by all the rebel min/maxer CM/riflemen and thats about it.  The game, for me, just devolved into nothing.  It was great when I first started and will be for any new player, but.................

I guess I need to try out AO to make a comparison and see how that fares.

Neocron and the upcoming sequel/expansion Beyond Dome of York.

Melee in a FPS mode, usually it's balanced but at the moment it's slightly overpowered.

Grunty, DAoC's archers can't kill a tank, especially if said tank is using a shield. :)

as for mages, that varies from game to game.. i'm not sure what its like in L2 but in Shadowbane, some light tank classes make great wizard slayers.. image
