so far watching videos and etc of spys and its always the same..swinging a blade. is it always like that? repetive?
A Spy approaches a group of 10 bane. (This is a theoretical and not 100% accurate situation)
The group includes:
1 Boss (high hp, high damage output)
1 Caretaker (rezzes biological)
1 Shield Drone (reduces damage done by you to mobs in area)
1 Technician (rezzes technological)
1 Linker (one-shots)
1 Hunter (roots)
1 Dog (stuns)
3 Random Thrax Soldiers
That’s the situation. As a spy, if you run at them and just slash randomly, you will die and you will die very fast. Chances of approaching from behind are nil because there are too many of them not to notice.
This (rather common) situation allows for a large variety of strategic options which is what make TR (and playing a spy fun).
If you flip on rage and rush them, you can probably kill 2 or maybe 3 (ex. Boss) before the others get their attacks or specials off. Smart money is on the linker and caretaker first, the linker so he doesn’t one shot you, the caretaker so he doesn’t rez the linker (and others). Once they are dead, the hunter would have rooted you, so you can no longer pick targets and must fight the dog which is the only thing within blade range (you are rooted, remember), so you try to kill the dog, but by then one of the 3 thrax kicks you and they pwn your dumb spy ass while you’re lying on your back counting the stars and mentally cursing the devs for making kickdown last so damn long.
So. You need better options for approach. First of all, you can Polymorph it and get into the thick of them without them getting the first shots off. This may give you time to take out a 3rd mob before dying but not much else.
More options:
EMP rifle the bot from 60m out, rifle the caretaker and technician before the others are on you. This works even better if you hit them with a little present from the air force first (carpet bombing). You can also reverse polarity on all of them before you start (it doesn’t get aggro).
Once the others are on you, you magnesium flash the bastards so that they don’t kill you while you’re operating your blade. You also Traitor the linker so he is out one-shotting something else or at the very least out of your way.
Then slowly and methodically you work through the bastards until it’s just you (at no armor and 50% HP) and the boss. So you traitor him off too, stick a stim into your arm and polymorph, by the time the boss comes around, you have rage on (for a second time) and are standing behind him ready for a juicy backstab which is just the first step to a quick dispatch.
Other than that, it does just take 1 button to do a blade attack.
Don’t get me wrong, I do wish the melee was a bit more involved with different “blade moves” maybe like other games, but TR is not without it’s own complexities and intricacies.

Thats something I love about this game is how you can mix and match your skills and any anything else you have at your disposal.
A preference I have is to always carry at least 20 of the best EMP charges (the ones you toss into the dirt right below you, not the grenades). For example, like in Arieste's post, that spot right after the magnesium flash, that is where i would drop an EMP right in the middle of them. It saves me the trouble of ripping their shields and knocks them all on their butts for a short period of time.

I do like a game with more cast-able skills. Spamming 1-2 skill from 30-50 dont seem that much fun. But things might get better

Excellent post, Arieste
