Lack of diversity

Has anyone else noticed from the beta footage (i didn't get into the beta myself) that there seems to be a lack of diversity in terms of appearance amongst the individual classes?

E.g. All the squig herders all look the same.

I know they say you'll be able to customize armour colour etc. ... but I assume you'll be able to acquire different looking gear?

Anybody know anything O_o

Thanks

If you read beta report #3 & #4 over on the warhammer news site, it covers how much depth the character customision has past the character select once it hits release..

Yes colour dyes are a factor, and yes there will be 'sets' in the game (not just set 'X is better then set Y' there will be a selection to use from reports given), but my personal favourate bit is your trophy rewards as demoed with one character in screenshots you can have so far daggers, scrolls, even heads hanging off your avitar and you can place them anywhere you wish (within reason), so by 'end game' it wont turn into 'attack of the clones' like in many MMOs, 'you' will be just you

    Bring on the WARRRRGGHH!

plus in beta you generally get a pre-made character. WAR might not be like this, but i have no idea i did not get into beta. Also im sure since it is beta not all the customizable features are in there.

The characters you see in those videos are 'pre-made' so everyone who plays that class will obviously look the same...

Right, its the same most beta's. At some point they want everyone to have max-ish chars to test endgame. And they are not going to take the time to give each person a different set of items if they are the same class.

    Yes, we noticed.

In Paul Barnett's recent blog, he was mentioning how the character customization is just now being put in the game.

There will be diversity by the time the game releases.

Al;though Character customization generally falls in the 2nd tier of game importance, it does mean a lot to many players. If you look at Mythics other game, there is plenty of character customization. I wager WAR will offer plenty

I've played in a ton of betas (and alphas for that matter) and I've never seen one that forced you into a pre-made character.  Now, at conventions and shows this is definitely true.

I suspect it has more to do with them just now getting a lot of the systems needed for customization into place.  Logically those would be one of the last aspects of a game you would worry about.

A better answer now appears in this month's WAR newsletter:

    Class Mastery (Specialization)

Specialization will affect your character visually.

Also, there will be a wearable-trophy system in place.

    Armor dyeing is also in.

Taken altogether, there should be enough customization to make characters relatively distinct and varied.

Yeah i watched a buddy play in the beta and...I wasn't impressed at all.  Actually i think some people are really gonna get a slap in the junk after actually seeing it and playing it for what it really is.  I was hyped up about it just like the next person, but after having the opportunity to see it for myself, I was dissapointed.     He actually quit playing the beta and uninstalled it from his machine.   It was like how i got hyped up for Vanguard and some other MMO's then got slapped into reality that it really wasn't that great.  I don't know, I only say him play it for 10 minutes before he got bored and turned it off.  I don't know I hope it does work out though...their isn't crap out right now besides Tabula Rasa...and I hate Shooter MMOs.

They have one of the most robust character customization systems ever done.  We have seen screenshots of it, but before beta got shut down we all used generic class characters.

When it opens back up I believe it will be fully or partially in.

Granted.. this doesnt have the amazing City of Heroes character diversity.. but give it a rest.. look at WOW. A raid consists of all classes looking the exact same because you can IN NO WAY modify your look. So.. lets go through a quick laundry list.

Lineage... and every other harcore asian grind fest game ever made ( RFO, Archlord, etc) These games are about as PVP focused as you get.. and people wearing the same stuff is important so that you can visually recognize the class/race combo you are fighting and strategically repare for your fight.

DAoC.. perhaps a more valid example. Yes.. the armor was the same.. but hey.. theey had a Dye system which rocked.. letting entire guilds choose colors and have all armor painted that color.

UO.. completely hid your gear.. but then again.. who cares.. the graphics were so bad you obviously werent playing that badass game for the look of your character.

Planetside... the only thing that was different was some rank and what guns you were holding.

WAR does have character diversity. There is a Podcast out atm that shows you different customized looks that you can add to your character. On top of that.. they will have a dye/color system as well. They might even implenet enchanments that might add proc or glowing effects.. further increasing diversity. Being able to visually distinguish your foe is a very important aspect of PvP. therefore.. i fell as though ( along the same line as DAoC).. WAR is doing a good job of finding a balance between no diversity and useless razzle dazzle that looks cool but serves no purpose.

Also.. lest we not forget.. id rather have a polished game that works properly and adds visual goodies later than a hoo-haw razzle dazzle game that sucks uts and rubber bands your character with crashes and exp loss resets. WAR has been pushing back their release for a while.. and despite the overall optimism.. too many pushbacks will be highly detrimental to their success.  They need to be , and imo are doing a good job of, focusing on the most imporant aspects of the release.. and thats Content, Balance, and Stability.

    Waiting for : WAR

Currently Playing: wasting time on web games..Space Pioneers, Travian, Duels, Secret of the Solstice, Tales of Pirates Online.

Considering playing:  AOC, Tabula Rasa ( if i can get my second vid card )

Retired From:  AO, Archlord, COH/COV, DDO, DAoC, EQ (1month), EVE, FFXI, GW, Horizons, L2,KO, RFO(might start again if im feeling squirrely), MxO, Planetside(.. god i wish CC never released), Saga of Ryzom, AC2 Beta, SHADOWBANE woot woot, 9 Dragons beta, SWG, UO ( best MMO ever made), and last but not least.. WOW.

    Good Post!

Anyways, WAR does have lots of customization that's plenty good enough for me. Every class has their unique looks(but they might look too similar to eachother on same tier.) Dye is a good feuture, although, I'd love it to be kinda cheap, instead of the Dye system of GW; where it takes lots of money to get a unique armor. Another thing that WAR will have achievements that will add on to your character, let's hope they get noticed :P
