When game companies say Q1, Q2 do they mean fiscal year?

Since fiscal year in usually broken down like this:

1st Quarter: October 1, 2007 – December 31, 2007

2nd Quarter: January 1, 2008 – March 31, 2008

3rd Quarter: April 1, 2008 – June 30, 2008

4th Quarter: July 1, 2008 – September 30, 2008

I hope so....

Obviously they aren't releasing until early 2008 so It'll be more like this

    1st Quarter: January 1, 2008 – March 31, 2008
    2nd Quarter: April 1, 2008 – June 30, 2008
    3rd Quarter: July 1, 2008 – September 30, 2008
    4th Quarter:October 1, 2008 – December 31, 2008

    Its not that simple.

Even if they did mean fiscal year, each company defines its own fiscal year so your numbers arent really correct. For some companies X-mas is in the 1st quarter and for others its in the 4th.

All big titles are relased either at x-mas or around school getting out(juneish.) You can assume by Q2 they mean the later.

After all, they want ot make as much money as possible

The game will not be released in early 2008 (it was scheduled for that until the delay) instead expect a 3rd QT release.

Not fiscal year, actual quarters.  So you're talking between July-September of 2008.

I'm not sure of any MMO during it's development that announced an estimated release date using the fiscal year.  In my experience it has always been described in terms of the actual year.

Mid should be the most sought after. They've already delayed it 3 times now they can't afford to delay any longer or they might lose a profit.

    Bollocks!

Wasn't it the second time? But yea i agree middle of the year is more likely. I'd say in June.

Right now they say Q2 and im guessing thats when it will launch most likely early june or late may.

Hold on Snow Leopard, imma let you finish, but Windows had one of the best operating systems of all time.

If the Powerball lottery was like Lotro, nobody would win for 2 years, and then everyone in Nebraska would win on the same day.
And then Nebraska would get nerfed.-pinkwood lotro fourms

For those of you who may watch "Pauls Video Blog" there is a brief video (can't remember which) where Paul says "and when we finaly release *Cough* April *Cough* you will see what we meen by...".  And although the current release date can still be pushed back, the current expected date of a release is somtime in the beginning of the second quarter.

To answer the question established by the orignal post:  It is never assumed that a company will give any release date based upon their own fiscal year unless specifically stated, and it would also be stated when their fiscal year starts so that an accurate time frame can be judged.

Look at it this way. They are losing a profit until its released.
And at the same time its like a investment. They want to do everything they can to make sure this investment pays off.

If they release too soon and its buggy and unplayable like vanguard was....that is the absolute worst thing that could happen and they would be doing way more damage than not releasing it at the perfect time.

Regardless people are going to play this game.
    Wanna know why?

Because "most" mmo fans dont have anything better than WoW (the ones that like WoW) You wouldnt beleive how many people that are playing that game are just basically biding there time till something better comes out.

    In other words...people will wait.
I mean jeesh..have you seen Darkfall boards?
Now most people dont beleive it will come out, but at the same time everyone would LOVE to see it released and be great.

I find this sentence very funny.

My bet is not on *cough*April*cough... but for a Memorial day release. I think they are close.. but there will be 45 days of more pushbacks at the very end due to unforseen stress test server/log in stability issues.

im all for delays as long as they make the game better. I think a lot of people are saying they need to come out before the WoW expac, or around the same time, but I think that's a bad thing. WoW probably saw it's largest increase in subscribers when TBC came out. I'm sure WotLK will be the same. So coming out after the hype has died down will probably be a good thing, as most people will be bored of the expac by then and looking for something new.

I would expect a summer release though, I guess it depends on how well the next phase of beta goes.
