I havn't played the game so I probably shouldn't be saying anything bad about it, but it really seems like an awful game. Is it any good? It's rated so high on this site I'm very surprised..

Because its new, different and fun
Its longevity(sp?) seems to be its only issue
The graphics are very beautiful even though the lag is almost nil. This is a game built for the casual gamer and for people who love getting into the story. In a matter of minutes you are getting into action unlike EQ and other games that can take you half an hour to an hour(sometimes a lot longer if you have problems getting a group). Most of the missions are instanced, which means you don't have to fight for mobs most of the time. Character creation is a lot of fun and easy. Also my experience with Customer Service has been great. Its the best CS I have had in any game.
Its a great game but if you only care about powerleveling or prefer to be crafting or pvping(pvp, limited crafting and supergroup's headquarters are being added when CoV expansion comes out) then this might not be the game for you.

I wasn't convinced either until I tried it at my friend's place. I played it for days and days and days and days once i got it. I've had to stop for a week or so because it was making me crazy.
But it's an awesome game. I love the character creation (I've made and tested over two dozen characters, all very unique), I love being able to fly, and I love the carefree feeling of the game. I mean, it can be serious, but at the same time it's perfectly acceptable to make a clown character that shoot fire from his hands.
It does get a bit repetitive, but the types of enemies and the mission areas change as you get higher level, and there's always that ancipation of getting a new power every even level!
--luke
It was anything but carefree for me, I was constantly under pressure trying to catch up to my friends who were like 7 levels ahead of me.
Sure there's sidekicking in the game, but if I remember correctly there's a 5 level range on it. Besides, that didn't help me when I was level 12 and all my friends were hunting in an area that required you to be at least level 15 security level to get in.
I seriously do miss CoH though.. I might reinstall it and try it once they get the PvP arena working. If I do I'll be coming here looking for a good server/supergroup.

The 5 level range used to be the minium amount of a level difference needed to separate the mentor and the sidekick. That was changed to 3 though. I've sidekicked people more than 10 levels below me.
it is the best crappy game ive ever played.
great graphics, concept, and exicution. amazing customization, no lag at all, and as unique as a game gets these days. decent community, good devs and little downtime.
the only thing that makes this game suck, is the fact that after you play it for a few weeks, youve seen it all. ive had the game for 1.5 months now, and ive only had one mission really (actually 3 ill explain)...
every mission in the game is either one of these two things:
1. kill X of X in zone X (usally 10) -or-
2. indoor mission: kill all the bad guys inside and click on the glowing box at the end to complete.
thats it. period. there is one other quest type also, but it really doesnt count, when your a n00b starting out youll get one quest to go patrol the city (visit 5 locals) and then return home. boring.
I agree gseimon. And even apart from the missions, once you've seen the first four or five grey buildings you've seen them all. Almost every zone is streets and buildings. It was cool at first to be able to go into the dump and the water reservoir and stuff, but when every city has that it gets old quickly. There are small things, for example when you're in King's Row it's a little darker and the pavement looks browner and dirtier, and there is paper and other debris floating around at your feet, but it's not enough. Sure other MMORPGs get old as well, but not nearly as quickly as CoH.

I gotta say that I love this game. It's the first game that I have found where the grind feels almost non-existent (and I've played a few). Sure the missions are the a bit samey, but that's due to the nature of the game, and the subject matter. I don't see how you can have a Superhero game that involves much more than beating up villains, and still stay true to the Genre.
Sidekicking is a brilliant idea and works really well. The look and sound of the game is outstanding, with a real feel of cities being quite large (especially the "blank" maps that you get for some zones - it can take hours to fully explore these). Normally I only keep one MMO subscription running at any one time but I think CoH will stay with me while I venture into others such as WoW and Matrix Online.
I'd recommend this to anyone to give it a try - it's a breath of fresh air for the MMORPG community as a whole.
Easy its fun, it does get a little old quick with the lack of variety but no other game is as easy and as fun as COH. That and flight ROCKS.
Trand
If you strip down the missions to that, than you can say all missions/quests/tasks in all games are the same thing. Go kill this stuff to get item. At least with these missions they have different background stories and the bad guys react to you in the way fitting the story.
The graphics and gameplay are without doubt the BEST of any MMORPG on the market today. Character creation is simply phenomenal. Navigation is superb, and the sheer physics of the game are incredible.
Sadly, the rest of it doesn't live up to those standards. It's the single most unbalanced game I've -ever- played, and the Devs basically just don't care. The "Scrapper" class is about half as powerful as the "Blaster" class, for example, and the devs just keep buffing Blasters and nerfing Scrappers. It's wierd, boarding on insane.
Also, there's nothing to do but level-grind. No loot, no crafting- nothing. Add to that the fact that it's somehow attracted the very worst of the MMORPG community, and you have a game that could have been AWESOME, but instead only holds your interest for about a month, and only then until you realize that there's maybe three valid Class Builds in the entire game, and 90% of the player base is playing the exact same templates.
It's too bad- their movement and graphics are spectaularly better than, say, AC2 or EverQuest. CoH is the standard by which graphics and controls should be judged. But it's very shallow, and VERY unbalanced, and the Devs act like they've never even heard of any other MMORPGs, let alone played them. Shouldn't Devs be familiar with the state of the art of their chosen genre?
Quit making stuff up. They haven't been buffing blasters at all. In fact, they have been reducing blaster skills that are too powerful (Devices). Blasters are SUPPOSED to be powerful and it sounds to me you just have the classic case of class envy. You played a scrapper and you hate that blasters out damage you. Yes, scrappers need some boosting, and they have been working on it, but please, half as powerful? A scrapper in my SG beats the living beJesus out of bosses. Scrappers just got critical hits and are STILL getting something else added per Statesmans statement.
Secondly, this is my 8th MMO and the community is pretty "standard". Every community has whiners, 1337 dudes, RPGers and PowerGamers all fighting about their respective positions. You're 90% statement is the classic case of "83% of all stats are made up on the spot...including this one". Whats your basis of 90%? In fact, in my SG, there isn't ONE single Devices blaster (the current Flavor of the Month). To say there are just 3 valid builds indicates to me that you are a min/maxer. Blasters are hands down the damage dealers. Someone has to be, don't they? Were Druids as powerful as Wizards in EQ? No. Because someone has to be designed as the most powerful. It's called diversity.
I'm not gonna pump this game in every aspect. It has issues in balance but you are blowing them WAY out of proportion because your particular class was one with issues. Name an MMO that hasn't had some balance problems?
the_traveller is right, you are making stuff up. If anything they have nerfed blasters and just done nothing with scrappers. They have also nerfed the fire tankers which needed to be. Also 90% of the people are not playing the exact templates. In my entire supergroup, there is only 2 characters who share the same powers and I am in a big group. The Devs are some of the best out there and are working on balancing the game and have been a hell of lot more open than any other group of devs I have delt with.
I am so sick of people shooting off their mouth about something they obviously know jack about.
Well, nothing is perfect, but better than most of the MMOs out there, I'd say yes.
It's just my opinion, but to me...that's all that matters.

I hate to be ill-tempered, but it's bad enough that fanboys like you ruined CoH- we really don't need you around HERE, too.
In the last major patch, they buffed every single Blaster Secondary except devices. At the same time, they nerfed the Scrapper powers "Moment of Glory" and "Integration", although -nobody- had -ever- complained about those powers being over powered.
So you can stuff your "stop making stuff up" idiocy. When I'm demonstratably right (since all anyone has to do is log on to the CoH boards and look at the Dev Notes) and you are absolutely CLUELESS, I don't think you have -any right at all- to acccuse me of "making stuff up". In the future, I suggest that you do a little research before instantly posting rude, untrue garbage.
Now, to the guy that says "I haven't played lately"- holy smokes. CoH fans live in a state of denial, 24/7. I really shouldn't have to do your research for you, but here goes:
Scrappers were given 5% critical hit capability. Which translated into almost NOTHING in terms of actual gameplay. Go to the Scrapper boards, and read Statesman's comments. Given that most minions are three-hit kills anyway, and the 5% crit is calculated even on MISSES, what happens is that most the time the Crit is wasted on either a killing blow that would have finished the mob regardless, or goes off on a Miss. The actual chance of getting a useful crit turns out to be about 1%. Wow.
As for Blasters being "nerfed"- hardly. AR/Dev was never the problem. Holy smokes, do you folks even play the game? A Fire/Dev Blaster can hit Level Cap in about three weeks. Try doing that with your scrapper.
In fact, since I still have an account, I'm make the same offer here that I've made on the CoH boards- I'll bet any one of you $100, cash American, verifiable with a third party, that I can hit level 30 earlier than you can. The only rules are: You play any Scrapper you want. I'll play a Fire Blaster, and we play the same number of hours. So come on, all you folks that say I don't know what I'm talking about. I'm totally willing to put my money where my mouth is. However, I noticed that not ONE person on the CoH boards ever taken me up on it.
So let's go, hot shots. Freedom Server. This weekend. We start characters at the same time. You a Scrapper. Me a Fire/Devices Blaster. $100 to whoever hits 30 first. I won't even insist that you Solo- group all you want, although I myself promise to fight entirely by myself.
Gee. I wonder if the Big Talkers on THIS board are willing to put up or shut up.
To address your 3 paragraphs concerning me...<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />
1. Fanboy huh? Interesting, I was thinking of quitting because CoH is getting boring for me. Know many fanboys that are quitting? And I thought we were having an intelligent debate, silly me. Guess its my turn... *clears throat* Screw you Whiner! You're just a PowerGaming simpleton! ah, there we go, dwindling into the 10 year old "F the World" mentality.
2. Last patch they buffed Blaster secondaries, yea, um...does ANY blaster actually use their secondary? If you do, you're a moron. Anyone who visits the boards over there on THAT issue can tell you that YOU'RE absolutely CLUELESS.
So people have to complain before the Devs can tweak something for being too powerful? Are you telling me the 1% of the community that posts to the Forums should decide the outcome of the game balance?
3. Thank you for your suggestion and might I suggest you stop whining cuz you hate your Scrapper and quit blowing things out of proportion to suit your point.
And why didn't you address the other points I made? hmm?
Your Quote: It's the single most unbalanced game I've -ever- played, and the Devs basically just don't care.
I then assume this is the ONLY game you've ever played, otherwise this statement is a fallacy and used to drive your opinion home. And hey, didn't you JUST post that you and Stateman know about Scrapper issues and are talking of ways to fix it? Huh? I thought the Devs didn't care? hmm. Inconsistencies. Usually means, yep, that you're exaggerating to prove your point.
Youre Quote: The "Scrapper" class is about half as powerful as the "Blaster" class, for example, and the devs just keep buffing Blasters and nerfing Scrappers.
Half as powerful? Half? Really now, another complete exaggeration to emphasize your position. Blasters are easily the most powerful, but I would certainly take you up on a "challenge" to see if I can make a scrapper that does more than HALF the damage your Blaster does. By that analogy, your little challenge is null, it SHOULD state, "I"ll bet you $100 that you can't make a Scrapper that levels HALF as fast as My Blaster."
Your Quote: Add to that the fact that it's somehow attracted the very worst of the MMORPG community,
Um, yea, the same community that you suggest should dictate when a class gets balanced.
Your Quote: and only then until you realize that there's maybe three valid Class Builds in the entire game, and 90% of the player base is playing the exact same templates.
Yea, and where exactly are you getting THESE numbers Mr. HeresMyProof? Hmm, another complete fallacy to prove your point.
And for little challenge at the end, oh please. Like anyone is arguing that Blasters are the Kings of soloing. You just proved my point. lol You are pissed that your little Scrapper can't level as fast as a Blaster.
Blasters level faster... the actual gap is much smaller than it is percieved, but playing a blaster tends to be easier on many levels... Interestingly enough, most powerlevellers choose this AT and then complain that the game is too easy, all they do is point and click... but that's an arguement for another day...
CoH rates high because it is an excellent game. It is a ton of fun and excels in nearly all areas except one. Variety of Gameplay. In CoH, there is no hours and hours of click-crafting to do to seperate one combat experience from the next. You go straight from fight to fight. Doing this for too many hours a day too many days in a row gets boring.
Imho, there is absolutely nothing wrong with the game, but it fails to cater to the harcore MMORPGer... this is great for them, since it does cater to the laregely untapped casual and newbie markets... but often professional MMOers consider the game inferior because it is not built to suit their tastes.
If you have to play MMOs multiple hours on a daily basis, CoH is not for you. Other than that, CoH is the greatest MMO out right now.

Pros
Character Creation - Unbelievably cool character creation. I have and know people who have spent hours just making their character. You also get to create alternate costumes that you can switch to at your leisure. They come at lv 20,30 and 40. It's a lot of the fun rerolling characters for the customization/creation aspects available and I think thats part of the reason why many people play a lot of alts. The other reason is
Low Levels - The lower levels are a lot of fun. You get new powers and levels pretty quick.
Lack of Lag - This is a BIG one for me. I cant stand getting lag. I have top of the line system and a smoking speed cable modem, I should not get lag. I have quit some games with a lot of potential solely on lag issues. CoH has basically no lag. I have gotten some in a few zones sometimes around a lot of other characters but much better than most games.
Casual Gamer Friendly - I can log on for half an hour and feel like I accomplished something.
Travel - Once you get a travel power (at lv 14 you have options of getting different travel powers that let you fly/run fast/teleport/superjump), travelling across the maps goes pretty fast. No 20 minute journeys to get to your next location.
Death penalty - CoH gives you 'debt' when you die. No corpse runs, no loss of xp. It's sorta like a loss in that you have to get back your debt. Ie: I die, I get 5000 debt. Now whenever I get experience, half of it goes to the debt and half of it goes to my xp bar until I am out of debt. It just slows your progression for a little while. I find this system better than many out there.
No 'items' - You'll notice this is below on Cons as well. The only 'item' drops you get are enhancements. These are things you put into your powers to make them stronger (make a damage power do more damage, a control power hold for longer, a power more accurate, etc). No other items means no camping, no feeling like you're inferior because you can't Powergame and get the uber loot, etc.
Cons
Higher levels - Similar to pretty much all MMOs, the higher levels start to become a grind. XP slows down in the 30s, and gets really slow at higher 30s/40s. They are still tweaking xp rewards here and there so they might be realizing that people are getting a little frustrated at higher levels with xp gain. Especially because of the next point
Just fighting - That's pretty much the gist of CoH. There are stories, some are really cool. There are task force missions (a complete story arc you complete with a group with reward at the end) and that's pretty much it. What you have to keep in mind is this is NOT a standard MMO. It's more of an action game. That's what a lot of people like. The action/fighting is fun so you forget that you're gaining levels/grinding.
SuperGroup system - The SuperGroup system sucks. Supergroups are Guilds and there are basically zero options for what to do with them. You create a SuperGroup, you choose your colors, and that's about it. Other than that, its just a place to hang with friends.
No RP - Don't get this game if you want to Roleplay at all. It doesn't happen. Period. I think this just isn't a game that is easily RP'd.
No items - The con of no items is there is nothing to look forward to for drops besides stuff to make powers better. I like getting a cool sword drop or collecting misc drops to go sell and build my wealth. It adds a fun element to an MMO. It also gives that added level of customization of character (sort of, you know in some games, EVERYONE ends up wearing the same uber chest piece etc), but the customization in CoH comes from your costume.
That's my honest assessment of pros and cons. I'm sure someone will come tell me how stupid I am but...um...yea, whatever.
I'm sure I'll think of others, but that's all that's coming to mind right now.
Cool thanks for listing the pros and cons! This sounds like the game for me because i'm a casual player and most of the other MMO's I played made you stay on for 4 hours to accomplish anything. I'm really looking forward to getting this game. One other question: Are there game cards available or is it only payable by credit card?
