What is the point of a Mmorpg? To have fun isnt it, well read below this isnt fun
Now I realize all games arent for everyone, however below is a list of what the game companies are like, as well as what the game is like before you try it as well as when are they going to change this crap?
http://mmorpg.com/discussion2.cfm/post/1732543#1732543
Why is it that every mmorpg is starting to suck, I mean most korean based Mmorpg's as well as japaneese games have it hard, where you have to buy the virtual items/in game gold online to play the game if it has been out for a year, and your a new comer because the way their ecnomics system work's its hard to get anything good or decent at all by the time you hit that certain level.
Also I see other thing's that make them sucky such as in (NC Soft) Lineage 2 they nerf classes so much that they suck, such as the poor sorcerer for example, and then they dont give them shit in return as well as they dont offer people free class changes or anything when the nerf is too bad, but instead you waste all these months playing all the way up on another character just for it to happen again?
I used to play games by NC Soft, and all their video's of the games look great, but trust me, you have to actually see the in game game play, not a recoreded demo, but experience it to know if its worthit, and in order to do that you have to buy the CD, now imagine if you go to your local retail store, and buy the game for $30 -$50, and then install it, and play it, and it sucks, you cant retrun it once you have used the code off of it + if at least 10,000 people in the u.s bought a copy at that price look how much money they make.
So therefore I no longer trust any mmorpg's by NC Soft, although they might be good someone would have to prove to me otherwise.
Second Thing.
Games like EVE Online are great, however there is still the issue where you have to wait Minutes, Hours, Days, and you cant even train your 2nd or 3rd character at the same time, which is very lame, and What is the point of subscrbing to a game that you cannot hardly play due to the fact of having to wait that time?
RATS? Rats for pve are quite boring, When I say space combat, I mean space combat, fun killling, blowing up lots of ship's, not warp into an area kill 15 rats, gotta go to another area, that kind of crap.
PVP, Im sure its great, but how long do you gotta subscribe till you max out all your good skills, over 4 month's, and on a regular mmorpg I could max out all my skills, or close to all my skills playing less time, and ect.
Third Thing
Grind Fest Games, Why do they even make these games, Final Fantasy XI is a good online game, I love the story, however you get stuck having to wait for parties for minutes, hours, days sometimes just to level up, although some say you can level up without a group, I think its bull shit, Plus the down time for hp and mana sucks kinda.
Korean, and Japneese games always have great story lines, but when it comes to actual game play they make them suck, such as NERFS, Down Time, Grinding, Ecnomics.
Fourth Thing
FREE MMORPG, by the term Free, they make it sound free, and it is free to play, however donators get big unfar advantages over you, as well as it isnt worth even paying for, ill tell you why.
I paid over $300 Real Life Cash for getting all the armor sets in a game before, and it was free, and guess what, there arent even any new content patches for it it has been months, almost 4-5 months, and everything.
Also Games that take Area Points, or Acclaim Coins, and doesnt have a $9.99 a month subscription fee, or a $14.95 a month subscription fee, to enjoy all the thing's a subscriber should have, dont play it, They could make it free, and charge a monthly fee for subscribers to play, but they dont because to purchase items in a store you have to spend over $50 a month to keep all your potions up for the average hours a day you play, ect.
Fith Thing.
Are MMORPG Worthit anymore, lots may think so, well depending on how they do it ID think so to, maybe the new Next Gen Mmorpg's will be great, and maybe even kill mmorpg's like eve online, world of warcraft, ect, or make them loose a few customers.
Star Trek Online, Age OF Conan, Stargate Worlds, ect. Maybe they will be great, and good, not sure because they are not out yet.
But For Future games, I would sure have to look into are, Sony, NC Soft, And any Other Korean/Japaneese game before I jump right into it, because they always screw up their games.
-OFF Topic-
Personally I like all mmorpg's, but since they have digital cable in the United States, why Not make a MMORPG BOX, and release it for PC's, or something, that allow's you to install any games you want from the decoder box onto your pc, and play anyone you like at any time, and also registers an account for each game for you to play? Im sure some of you subscribe to like 2-3 mmorpg's at a time? wouldnt some of you like to try them all out, but it just costs to much? well a mmorpg box that run's through cable lines, or high speed internet would make it possible to pay one monthly fee and get access to all the mmorpg's released in the U.S.
Also XBOX games, a lot of the great games are coming onto pc now, because a lot of people dont like The XBOX 360, or the PS3, I like them but they over charge them due to the fact that my pc has way more processing power than that, or any pc with an AGEIA physic card + 2 Geforce 8800 Ultra's, and a quad core processor and 4 Gigs of ram + would out beat a Xbox 360, not to mention lots of hard disc space to save your games on, and ect.
So why not Sony, and Microsoft sell PC Software (LEGALIZED) Emulator CD's that put the software on your pc to play your xbox 360 online games ,and ps3 games, you could still pay them the $50 a year for the subscription fee, but why do you have to buy all these bulky consoles that take up space, and ect, instead of having one PC that does it all.
Well ask them that question, the reason is money, thats all they are interested in, not those who have decent pc's that could do this, but they just want you to pay $400 + for the good ps3 set, or best xbox360 boxed sets.
Future of the world, and mmorpg's, and game's for us Doesnt look to good really, As long as they keep up with all this NERFING, Changing, No Good Updates, without runing thing's, FREE mmorpg's that actually cost for thing's, as well as Sucking mmorpg's.
Anyways Hope you understand this stuff, it really all makes sense, and for those who enjoy your games the way they are good for you, such as those who play eve, or lineage 2, But consider that new people, and ecnomics arent are way high, when a new player comes to a new mmorpg, and it ruins the game experience for them.
Such as not being able to really pvp right then in EVE
NERF's/ecnomics of Out Of U.S Based games Japan/Korean games.
The way a game is changed so much it now sucks. (SONY)
Ect.

tl;dr.... the future of MMOs = Eternum Online
..Or at least some other sort of mobile solution.

It takes a real man to learn the truth... it takes the truth to learn a real man.
You assume WAAAAY too much about EVE without actually knowing the facts.
Fact is EVE's universe is shaped by it's PVP. 4 months is a drop of water in a ocean for EVE skills. You can fly something well, but there is a FAR way you can go skilling in EVE. As for not being able to play because you need to wait for a skill. You can fly ships from the start. If you don't have the patience to progress go powerlevel in those simple mmo's you speak of. I love EVE's skill system and freedom it allows you to choose. There is no limits to what you want to become. You can fly any ship you want to skill for no matter what race you are.
Drop EVE from your assumptions of these simple mindless crappy mmo's because EVE is in a league all it's own.
SHOHADAKU
Although the post borders on rant, I understand a lot of the frustrations. The problem , that Ive come to grips with, is that there is no perfect game out there (ok, ok..there is Pong).
I found that if I focused and persevered on where a game is lacking, I will never appreciate where the game shines. Now, I decide first what I want out of the game, and then I enjoy that aspect
Torrential
Torrential: DAOC (Pendragon)
Awned: World of Warcraft (Lothar)
Torren: Warhammer Online (Praag)
Some folks see the glass half empty, some see it as half full. I'm thinking MMORPG's aren't going to be your type of game OP
All of the 'problems' you've dealt are real no doubt, the real measure of a gamer is how they adapt, change and overcome the issues.
OP seems to lack patience, if not maximum level/skills/abilities in 4 months he's frustrated. what causes this mentality
Back in the early days of DAOC it took me 4 months to get my first character to 50.and then the real game started., where I had to farm about 20 plat, level up a buff bott on a 2nd account, take up spellcrafting on a 3rd account so I could craft my own gear and make some good money, and start doing endless pvp for realm points so I could get the cool new abilities
It took a long time to create a good character in those days, now too many folks want instant gratification
Sure, nerfs suck, but almost always they are to balance the gameplay for others..sure the people nerfed hate it, but too bad, learn to play is what I say
Who the hell are you, and why should I care?
Congrats! You are a victim of Trollstar!
The point of every MMORPG in the past, present, and future is to simply make money for it's steakholders. Simply put, you take the best game known to man an when you force it to make more and more money for it's investors and hence the game will always suck somehow and in some way because the game designers are pressured to change so many things in the game.
Eve-Online, EQ2, DnL, SWG (Dead), Guild Wars, Anarchy Online, EQ, DAoC, Planet Side, WoW, LOTR, Tabula Rasa.
50/50 .. making money and keeping the players interested, thats the main goal, but most in time the money wins. they are humans, they are capitalists, they just want your money and not beeing your best friend this can be changed, but only the community can change it.
i have a dream.. a dream about a AI who controls a virtual environment byself - who generates technology, places, countrys, planets.. based on the players actions who are on the server. this should giving the virtual world enough content and lesser real world capitalism
I sorta agree. The whole genre is stagnating because of the success of a few games. Every company is trying to strike it rich with an MMO and they are following the same formula. There are a million and one fantasy based MMOs which offer nothing new, other than another grindfest. It's not hurting just this genre, but all pc games. Look at what's coming out lately. Everything is either a shooter, a strategy game or an MMO with the odd port tossed in.
Hopefully the market will stop getting flooded with so many poor MMOs soon and a few gems arise to the surface, because there has been alot of garbage comming out in the last few years.
People that don't even have time to read a post is the future of MMORPGs unfortunately.
A good MMORPG don't need nerf'ing, it's need expanding in content.
But I, on a large scale agree with Reklaw and Trollstar.

If you try to fail, and succeed, which have you done?
------------------------------------------------------------
Well, and it has to be said, WoW spoiled alot of players. I used 2 years getting my toon up to max level in my first mmo back in 2001. And I was happy with that toon and enjoyed and treasured it for all the effort I've put into it for many years after that. Must be why I today have the patience for long grind sessions
Now let me ask the OP, why are you here? From your post it seem like you dont like mmo's at all. And dissing Eve cause you cant train 3 characters at once, what is that? Let me ask you what other mmo you can do that on 1 account? (No, dual/triple etc boxing is out of the question, and also require multiple accounts). According to those that play Eve you can fly out, farm some missions and get to know the game in a week or two. Then you can help with pvp if so inclined. You dont need the biggest ship to pvp there. Infact they say its a dissability to fly them in pvp cause they handle like a cow.
Some of NCSoft's titles are quite fun(CoH/CoV comes to mind). Had alot of fun in that game for quite a while before I got bored with it.
Grinds? Some of us got used to insane grinds in the 'old' days and if you compare todays grinds with the old ones they can hardly be called grinds anymore. I use one example from my first mmo, AO. I used about 3 months getting an item I needed some time after they released Shadowlands(Spirit Shroud) killing the same mob over and over again. I did some other stuff too, but mostly I camped those mobs for that particular item.
Free mmo's? What do you expect? As long as they are free you cant really complain about anything in them. And if you pay real cash for ingame items...well. Do the term 'cheater' ring any bell? I know some mmo developers do that but I still find it retarded to support that stuff. Then your wallet will decide if you are successful in an mmo or not. Stupid!
If I find entertainment in stuff I find it worth to pay for it. I pay to rent dvd's and some silly console games now and then. I buy books and movies regularly. I pay for satelite tv and the decoder card. And last, I pay to play games online with thousands of other players forgetting myself in a virtual world.

Grammar nazi's. This one is for you.
I have enjoyed 7of the 8 MMO's I played. Of the non-MMO's I have purchased, I have enjoyed half at best, maybe 1/4 if you count some to of the cheap titles I bought. Overall, MMO's still have a lot more appeal.
I tire of a MMO within 6 months.
I tire of non-MMO's too, so I do not see this as being unique to any game genre. I bought Hellgate recently and played it for about 10 hours total, a fraction of the time I played Titanquest. I may try it again after I have had a longer break from Diablo type games.
I enjoyed Eve. I also agree with the comments on Eve. After 7 months of Eve, I had trained battleship skills to a reasonable level. At least another 9 months of subscriptions was needed to complete training the battleship skills. Its the most expensive leveling system I have come across. You can only train one toon on an account, so there was no opportunity in the same period to really try and devleop skills for mining, trading or a different style of battleship. In the same time on a single account on WoW I had leveled 3 toons from different classes to maximum level ( 50 at that time), tried some other classes for a few levels and trained up crafting skills on one toon.
The free MMO's sell "stuff" in the their shops for real money. Its part of the game and not cheating. I think an earlier comment was confusing this with subscription type MMO's where people pay real money for game items using mechanisms outside the game.
So it's okay for a game to:
Not start the fun until:
you have grinded 3 characters up to a point where you can actually play the game?
Now I know why Devs can get away with making unfun games....

Of course not, I was having fun the entire time I played, from the very first time I logged in on my first character. That's the point, there was no rush, and the 'end game' wasn't the end. Other characters let me refine my play style and add convenience, no longer had to find someone to buff me, I could do the buffs myself, and same for spell crafting, didn't have to pay someone to do it, I was able to make money from it myself
I even threw it all away and restarted on the FFA PVP server, just for the new experience, and had an even better time leveling up even more characters.
Who the hell are you, and why should I care?
