The combat system is good fun and I believe many of the comments about it are accurate. This is probably the area that lives up to the hype the best.
There are actually similarities to both types of instancing. The world is made up of the usual areas and these are populated by many players just like in WoW. However, there can also be different copies of the same area, filled up with even more players on each one. So rather than have more servers, they have more versions of the areas they need.
There are also instances sort of like WoW instances, where you can go in and interact with the story in a greater way (i.e. blow really big stuff up). They are generally really well done and an excellent use of small group instances for storytelling rather than loot-grinding. There is no raid size content yet and no one except the devs who know what shape or form this is going to take.
Population size seems good for a new MMO. The European server can get very full a lot of the time. The other servers have high populations for the expected timezones. Grouping certainly shouldn't be a problem for a new player. The LFG channel is very active.
I will admit that I've spent a good amount of time in WoW. I enjoyed my time there earlier on. I can say in all honesty that TR, right now, is orders of magnitude more fun for me than WoW is right now. Not even on the same scale. Of course everyone will have a different opinion about this. I like the combat, the missions and the settings. Not everyone will. I am also on a very casual time frame. I usually can't play for hours. TR can be fun in 30min blocks or for 5 hours at a time, while I find WoW has a longer minimum time to get started with "real fun". Can't comment on SWG, sorry.
If you are strapped for cash, I'd read all the reviews you can. I don't know if you follow any game magazines/sites, but maybe try and find one you generally agree with. See what they thought and see if you think it will suit you. A lot of people here will recommend it, a lot hate it. When in doubt, ask for the 3 day trial. You can easily get a good feel for the game in just the first few hours of play.
On a side note. It is my opinion that TR is good value for money. You will certainly get an entertaining month of play for your $50. So many single player games are done in just 10-15 hours. Even just playing the month of TR and cancelling will get you quite a bit more gameplay for your money.

There's a free trial? I don't see anything like that on their site but I could be blind
Can you provide a link, or point it out to me?
Thanks.
There's a thread above for the 3-day trials. I'd send one, but we only get 4 at a time and I sent all of mine out. As soon as people subscribe we get more trials to send, or we have to wait for the keys to expire, which is 3 months.
1. The combat system is pretty nice. I wish it was in 1st person at times, but I was able to adjust and get used to it. I'm used to playing my shooters in 1st person and MMOs in 3rd person, so it wasn't too bad. You're able to switch weapons and reload quickly and easily without hassle. There is auto-targeting but you can disable that if you want. Personally I like it because sometimes you get so many Bane that its hard to stay fixed to the same target on manual targeting.
2. Like the person above said, it's a combination of both. Some of the dungeon instances have a movie before you enter to feed you more of the story and understand why you're there, which I like. There are copies of some zones, but usually only 3 to 4 (at the most, from what I've seen).
3. Population is great. I see people in all of the bases and out in the world all of the time. I've never felt like I was the only one in the world.
4. The game has been fun. I've played several MMOs so I've had quite a range of experiences. The learning curve is pretty low so its easy to get started.
5. I think it's worth the time and money. Will it be a WoW-killer? No. But, it could easily be one of the best sci-fi based MMOs and the game does have TONS of potential for expansion and features.
I read lots of reviews and most of the negative reviews I read were from folks that played beta and not the final release. I just got tired of doing all the reading and figured I'd try it out for myself.

This is the official downloader. I hope they don't mind me linking the ftp site. If anyone here knows they have a problem with this, tell me and I'll take it down.
