CPU Usage.... Help!

BalterBalter Member Posts: 1,015

I'm sitting here with MSN, Norton, Firefox open and i go to the Task manager and it sits at 50-60% CPU usage.

I have 2 GB of 400MHz RAM, AMD Athlon x2 3800+, and Windows Vista.

Does this sound right?

My build: Sapphire Radeon HD 4850, Asus P5GC-MX/1333 Motherboard, 4gb G.SKILL DDR2 667MHz RAM, Core 2 Duo e7200 CPU, 250gb Western Digital SATA Harddrive, Windows Vista Home Basic 64-bit.

Yeah thats about right. Is norton running a background scan? It's not internet security is it?

Check to see whats taking up your CPU usage the most.  That'll answer your questions pretty much.

Open your resource manager and check to see if you got something named Lucallbackproxy and Autoupdatemanager running in the list. Norton will do several updates throughout the day using this to run it's checks for updating the security definitions for Norton. It is very annoying, I just set mine to manually do it when I want to update. But when it auto updates it uses a ton of CPU usage and memory. The sad thing about Nortons though is if you got a corrupted file or auto update config it wont recognize it and just keep trying to auto update non stop as long as the PC is on. I think by default it is set to infinity update if it can't find the update it keeps trying. Security programs can be very stubborn.

Not all security programs, Norton is by far one of the worst in terms of being memory intensive.  Most people buy it for the protection and that it's widely known, but little do they know they spend twice as much for a product that slows your system down and is the first program to be disabled if you ever DO get infected.

    Cheers!

1 GB Ram 2 GB Ram
    DX9 Vid Card w/128MB Ram ?

Sounds about right considering you are running Norton.  Also MSN can be a resource hog.

Yah, norton blows, especially on a gaming rig. In fact, when I did pc repair for awhile, the number one thing that caused pc's to be brought into my shop was norton jacking the pc's up.

    The second was McAfee.

The third was people trying to run Norton AND McAfee. (those programs hate each other.)

After that came AOL virus'..I mean programs, and only after that came all of the hardware issues people have.

I'd suggest getting rid of norton entirely and go with something like AVG or whatever the flavor of the month is. Much less resource intensive, and they all work better anyway, plus you can usually get them for free.
