I want to enjoy Eve, the game will not let me.

I've heard/read great reviews, awesome comments on the content and how open the game is, the graphics of the game and how good trinity is going to look. I just can't find myself getting into this game. I've been trying really hard to enjoy it but i can't help but find myself wondering "Is this it?". Mining is boring, but then again i wouldn't expect it to be fun. Mission running is awful, damned awful. The same missions over and over at the same places killing the same mob. Every npc ship is basically the same, no skill is required to blow it up, every confrontation is the same. I'm not one to play the markets so i've skipped that aspect. The corporation aspect of the game can be fun but what it boils down to is killing NPC's again to make money, the same rats over and over again. I think where i go sideways with eve's npc's and regular mmorpgs is that the ships are the same whereas other mmorpgs have a variety of what can be killed and different skills necessary to take them down. The few instances where my corp mates and myself took out other players was exciting don't get me wrong but those encounters are few and far in between.

I've been playing for two months so i ask the Eve community, what else? What else can i do in this game to get my attention. I want to enjoy Eve. I like the concept, i like the system of eve, i..i want to enjoy the game i just can't get into it. So..so...very badly want to enjoy the game. I'm not trying to bag on eve as it offers something different then other games i just need a hook to get me involved!

Suggestions perhaps?

Edit - Spent my first month as a carebear and my second down in 0.0. I've been torn apart a few times which i enjoyed actually...shame for my lost Drakes though.

I had the same problem. The only thing i can say is interact with more players in a pvp environment. Hit up low sec space and get killed a couple 15 times.

It will make you yurn for the pve. My main issues with is game is without alot of cash and a decent corp to back you, in 1 week of pvp you can be more broke than a brand new player and forced back to high sec farming noob ships.

But i agree with you when i played, I loved the Concept of Eve but not the execution, maybe if combat was more visceral (its not that its lacking in dynamics, there are tons of skills and abilities) the abilities just all feel the same without any kind of visual cues or visual rewards if you will for executing them.

Ill be coming back for trinity just to check it out, but i doubt I will stay unless they do something amazing with the combat in the near future.

Edit- Opps didnt see your edit, well looks like you are in the same boat as me then.

Lick Here you could be one of the lucky 10!!!

It's common feelings. First off, EVE can be cruel to newbies but that doesn't necessarily mean unfair. It takes a few months to became proficient at any given role. So don't try to spread yourself out too thin. Even in PvP; do you want to mess with your enemies system's, send a horde of drones or blast through his armor? Some ships can do all of these things but only to a limited extent. If you like pvp, then join a corp for it so that it happens much more often. One suggestions is to get in a  medium to large corp with a set goal. An "everything  goes" corp can be great, but you may feel more "important" in EVE if you join up with a role-play corp. Also, joining a band of pirates is  always an option

Now, mission boredom? I know exactly what you're talking about. It does get better at higher lvl missions, if you're up to it. You'll be raking in ISK too. I'm sure a veteran EVE play could give you much better pointers than myself. In the end though, EVE may just not be suitable for you.

Edit- Also, 0.0 is a scary place where Chulhu resides, for god's sake think of the children.

    What else ?

    Well there's a lot imo.

Despite all the excitement about Eve online there is however no guarantee that every newcomer will enjoy it. It's still a niche game, after all.

You're right about missions being boring and even NPC hunting. However it's not the same mobs all over again. True, rats (npc pirates) in belts are the same but only because most players tend to stay in the same regions. In Amarr controlled regions you will always face Sanshas but if you change regions you'll get differents rats with different damage types and resists.

As for missions, yes they can be boring but there are 2 elements of variety. First you only mention combat missions. Other divisions in the NPC corp you chose to work with, will offer a mix of courrier and combat missions. Most importantly, as you level up in missions (yes i know it takes time and require some skill training to reduce the time it takes to reach the next level), you will be faced with a variety of mobs. As mission level increase you'll be faced with more challenging foes. As a matter of fact it quite frequent for experienced players to loose expensive ships (battleships or command ships) in some lvl 4 missions.

Over the long run missions offer more and more challenge and more and more variety.

To me the greatest aspect of EvE is the player politics. Corporation and alliance management is simply outstanding. 0.0 space where player alliance can gain (and loose) sovereignty is rich with constant battles and also diplomacy.

You mentioned that you played EvE for 2 months. I must say i'm a bit surprised about your 0.0 experience. I wouldn't expect a 2 month-old char to have the skills, isks and experience to have a significant impact on 0.0 gameplay. Also you didn't mention what you were doing in 0.0. Piracy ? Taking part in the development of an established alliance ?

EvE Online is a great game but it's not easy to get short term gratification from it. I do not mean that you can't enjoy it from the start. I mean that just understanding the complex game mechanics and most importantly how player politics work can take a long time. I've been playing EvE Online since 2005 but because I took so many breaks from the game i only have about 12 months of actual game time. Yet, i still feel like a noob in a lot of areas in the game. I've been spending the last 7/8 months of game time in the same group of regions (empire and adjacent 0.0 space). I remember that during the first 2 months i was far from understanding everything that was happening around me.

EvE really is a game that you must enjoy on the long run. It's more about slow paced progress and the sense of gradual achievement.

I would advise you to take a short break (maybe one month) and try to go back at it. This time try different things, look at different aspects of the game. Try talking to different people etc. When i first tried EvE Online i was so frustrated that i stopped after 6 weeks and didn't come back for 5 months. It's on my second attempt that i was able to find the right game play for me.

I hope the same happens to you (but with only a one month break). If you're interested in an in-game contact i'm available.

    Good luck

well you have only tried a few professions and admitedly some of the more boring ones ^^. Also most of the ships your start out with are pretty boring =P

here are some things to try:

    1. Exploration / Treasure Hunting : Get into the Covt Ops Frig or the T1 version get some probes ( read the EvE-O forums for some guides) and go to town finding stuff to do. these offer, rare mining fields , Gas fields, rats, hacking sites/random lewts...all kinds of stuff.

    2. Scavenging: Going around and salvaging wrecks ( this is what I do as a profession and make mad cash doing it). Its one of those professions that doesnt pop out as "OH MAN THATS AWESOME" but I have a blast running around looting stuff all day and banking off others work. Plus its very fun to go into a hostile system and avoid getting killed and make off with tons of loot ^^.

    3. Pirating...not very profitable but ransoming people for their ships and pods can fetch a fair bit...and your bound to have PvP ^^.

    4. Arms Dealer: You can run T2 Mods and Equipment out to Warzones and sell them for a high price, this offers Huge Risk and Huge Payout.

    5. Inventing and Production: sounds like a bore, but with the right people to supply you or finding ways to supply yourself it can be rather fun.

    6. Drug Runner: you can join a corp that produces drugs / boosters and run them for them ^^. Trafficing illegal substances and items can be a real rush ^^.

    7. Racing: yes EvE has a racing league, where they go out and race around the galaxy. No real money to made here but its one fun time ^^.

thats just a few things you can do in EvE ^^...but the main thing that makes EvE fun is the People that you play with. A good Corp is a MUST...I would have quit a long time ago if not for the people I play with...its a lot like Table Top RPGs, just haveing the book isnt fun...its when you use the book and play with others is when it becomes fun. EvE is pretty much a Table Top RPG with graphics, everyone of the players in EvE Roleplays, even if they dont realize it ^^.

Based on what you said, I question the quality of your corporation. I would think at around 2 months you would want to be specializing in a specific area, with other newer players, and taking those skills to low sec. I understand what you mean about it being exciting, but being in a drake in 0.0 at 2 months is only going to lead to one thing....as you found out. If you had been with other new players, that were learning a specific skill, in .3 sec I think you would have had more success to build on...leading to more adventure.

When I was at 2 months, I was learning to pilot a thorax (cruiser) and trade mega on the market. The other new players were learning other things. This was meant to help build the corp, but in the end the corp merged with a bigger corp...we did have allot of fun thou....

I agree with all of the above advice.

In addition, a lot of player corporations supply free replacement ships to players who lose them in PvP. I recommend you join one of these and the grind should go away.

The replacement ships will be frigates, distroyers, and some may replace cruisers.

When you have more experience, they may replace more expensive ships.

    Fly safe!

Thank you all for your input, thoughts, and advice. I've always found these forums helpful..a bit surprising to be honest.

After reading your responses one in particular struck true to me. This game is about delayed gratification. While i do enjoy delayed gratification, i have kids, a job, and a wife. My free time to game is short which has turned me into a causal gamer -sigh-. Which is funny because i originally joined because of the skill system working for me while i was busy. Ultimately i don't have time to put those skills to use properly.

I had fun when i pvp'd, i lost three drakes all t1 fitted and a myrm t1..an Incursus or two also i believe. Never was upset with losing the ships..merely sat back and smiled in envy of my killers. My corp was small and fell apart. I am grateful however, as it introduced me to aspects of the game i never would have found on my own. Taught me not to auto pilot in Wicked Creek =). The community really is what makes this game what it is.

I think i will listen and take a break. Reroll a character after the holidays. A character i want as i rather dislike my Caldari pilot scum.  Take another shot at finding the right corp for me and perhaps recruit a few friends from work.

    Thanks again fellas.

Yes, EVE is about delayed gratification, but the good part is that you can do other stuff while you wait. Such as take care of work, kids and the missus. :D

Finding the right corp is not a simple matter, so don't be afraid to leave a corp if you find that they aren't what you were looking for.

  • PegasusJFPegasusJF Member Posts: 268

Simple fact is there is a significant grind to get to higher level missions. I know, I suffered through lvl 1s and 2s for a long time. Once you get up to 3 it gets much better. Level 3s are probably the best balance in reward, accessabilty and diffculty (lvl 4s give more, but they can be HARD!)

My suggestion, get an agent in a NPC corp that has stuff you want, AND has agents that give out at least 50% kill missions and has RD agents.

    Sarge:Give me a Boost!
    Kaboose:You are a good person.
Sarge:Not a morale boost you idiot a phisical one!

Getting with a good corporation that can help you with Skill direction is key.  I too was lost  the first few months.  My skill training was all over the place but eventually I found someone that I had gamed with years ago that also played Eve and he gave me some insight.  A few months later, I moved on to another corp that really changed my direction in the game.  The level of direction that was given by more experienced players in this corp was the tipping point for me and I have never looked back.

I highly recomend that you join Eve University as they can and will teach you everything you could ever want to know about Eve.  Although I did not know about them until after I was already hooked up with a good group of players.  I wished I would have when I first started out!

Sounds like you know what's needed but you're still unsure, or lack confidence, on how to build it.   Finding a good corp is going to be a challenge and the community is going to make the experiance.  Maybe try doing all the things you thought sucked with others you recruit from work as to experiance them in a new environment?  (make sure you have your co-workers complete at least 2-4 hours of the tutorial first)

I must ask, and point out, why were you using a Drake after 2 months for PvP?  Seriously, your corp mates should have pointed you in a better direction.  Please tell me your skills are very centric to using a BC.  ;)

If you're interested in trying something different I'd suggest this for you and your friends frm work.  Get them through the tutorial and make sure they understand the basic princples of targeting, shooting, shield and armor reparing, afterburners.  Locate a 4/10 Complex in a system that also has a station.  Bring some extra modules to the station just for when they need to rebuild a lost ship.   Now take your BC into the plex and go as far in as possible with your co-workers.   This will provide a nail biting experiance for a new player and might get them seeing the potential intensity EVE can provide.

EVE unlike many other games does not hand you ENDGAME on a silver platter

that is the real beauty of the game

There is no max level at which point your supposed farm for epic loot until your blue in the face

or PvP all day to purchase new skills and equipment.

Its a giant sandbox where you can do a multitude of activities within the parameters of the game environment

that are as elaborate or exciting as you can dream up

there are groups of people who smuggle illegal substances through low sec and 0.0 to turn a profit

people who administer huge player alliances and people who fight in them.

diplomats, pirates, explorers, scientists, ..........in eve you have to decide what to commit to!

and you can decide to change career without reroling

its not faux roll playing like many other MMO's that allow you have a role to play as long as you can see it on the list.

It's probibly the closest thing to a true roleplaying game on the market today.

im sounding kinda fanboi, and i can assure you that is'nt the case

sure eve aint going to be for everyone ...but not due to lack of game-play hook!

most lightly because of the everything handed to you on a platter / instant reward / gameplay that has become en vogue now days, and has a little yellow? over its head to tell you what to do !
