heh its like 2 different games.

As a game dev in training myself, it kind of blows me away that a game can change that much

It's exceptionally rare for a game to be scrapped after 3 years of high dollar development just to repeat the process all over again.

Most publishers would have said screw you, we don't care if it's not innovative enough; Release what you've got and make it work.

That looked a lot more interesting than the pile of crap that was released. :(

I'm afraid you have the minority opinion here...Most of us are thankful this idea got scrapped and we got what we have now.  Those vids are are basically nothing in common with what most of us picture war to be...haha, that thing looks all pretty and nice, now we have adrenalin and sweat

Lets all be glad they didn't continue the look/feel of 2004 and for those who don't know or understand why the game has changed to what it is today.....

    “Uninspired Results”

Moving Tabula Rasa forward, at this point, meant moving backwards. Garriott and his team took a close look at what they had: With an eye on time to market, and a belief that MMOs didn't sell based on graphical quality, the team that hoped to innovate on every front had chosen to use a licensed rendering engine. The backdrop of their world was a blending of sci-fi and martial arts served up in an awkward futuristic art nouveau style. The choices in male avatar costuming were so poor that nearly everyone chose to play as a female. A focus on making story the center of the game led to a dependence on instanced content, making the world feel desolate and lonely. Despite a chorus of voices warning the Tabula Rasa team that the game just wasn't working, the developer continued on in a belief that, according to Garriott, it would all somehow come together in the end. http://www.gamasutra.com/features/20060323/huebner_02.shtml

If the game would have been released the way it looked in 2004 everyone would be screaming F2P as it was almost identical to many Free To Play asian grindfest games. Like i said glad they choose a different route then what we saw back then, which wasn't in any way original. Geuss you only comment on the small part i copy/pasted and not the full report where the link is there for.

I think everyone should just look at how much work they did remodeling and remaking a game in 2 years with this much sucsess seriously the game looks great now. Also how the Eloh have all their stuff from the old game is neat, and i can guarentee player housing now seeing as it was an oginial game mechanice that im sure RG will want back in.

All I can say is thank god they ended up where they are now.  I'm not so sure I would have picked up TR in that sort of "setting".  The TR we have today is much more unique and more immersive than the world that was in place at that time.

I was running around the Plains last night and have a new respect for the game.  Just outside of the main base, there were airstrikes, strikers coming in every few minutes, 5 or 6 dropships of bane, just all going at it.  The setting was perfect, war was truly at hand.  Flying shards of ice, balls of fire, and electricity were abundant and everyone was battling it out till every last Bane was gone.  It was just a realization that they accomplished something many games just can't.

Then I set my graphics up only to leave myself drooling over what a better computer would provide in terms of quality.  I've been playing without shadows for so long now, I didn't realize what I was missing.  Man if only I had a few grand.

I remember when i first saw TR back in 04 then 05 06 and now in 07 lol.

    Playing: Everthing
    Played: DAoC,AC2,EvE,SWG,WAR,MXO,CoX,EQ2,L2,LOTRO,SB,UO,WoW.
I have played every MMO that has ever come out.

Lol, I didn't realise TR had started out a different game and was completely redone half way through development. The combat looked like something from mortal combat with all those martial arts moves and spinning around the place.

I was looking forward to the game back then. I liked the look of character movements and skills. Not that i do not like current TR, but i liked the first idea alot more.

It reminded me of "The Saga of Ryzom". I do like the color of the old style though. If they would of use the current TR Engine style and kept the Fantasy Sci-Fi, would of been really cool.

Unfortunately, it isn't that rare when Richard Garriott is involved.  Ultima IX was restarted from scratch at least three times and UO2 was canned by EA when Mr. Garriott decided it needed to be restarted from scratch a second time.  If it wasn't for the fact that his boss is his brother, the Asian/Western MMO hybrid Tabula Rasa would likely been released.

I'm very glad they decided to overhaul it. I wouldn't want to play what I just saw.

I would have loved to have UO2 ...and I think alot of older gamers would agree

    old TR < new TR

It would be interesting to know exactly how the first TR was scrapped--I believe it was because the reception from initial testers and onlookers in both the US and Asia was very bad. In the early stages of NcSoft NA (2001-2004) there was much boasting about TR "bringing East and West together" and make a "revolutionary, ground-breaking, highly original" mammoth game like Lineage but so much better-- with millions of subscribers around the world. Keep in mind that WOW was not around until later to do exactly what the Garriotts intended. There was also some intimation that the art style of the first TR offended Asians--it didn't so much honor Asian art as it mocked and lampooned it.

However, the decision to scrap was not made by RG's brother, at least not alone. By this time, NcSoft Seoul had sunk mega-millions into the brothers. Yahoo's company profile states that they own 6% of NcSoft--probably what NcSoft paid the brothers to buy out Destination Games and attain the Garriott "brand" name like Nike sports, etc. The Korea Times, an important newspaper in Seoul, says that NcSoft may be out 80-100M dollars on Destination Games and the two Tabula Rasas. We shall know more by Feb, when the next financials come out. But the stock has lost almost 50% of its value since October 2, 2007.

When you invest that much, you aren't in a good position to just give up and walk away. It's like being out in the middle of the ocean in a rowboat--you just have to keep rowing and hope the captain knows where he's going.

Until you spread your wings, you have no idea how far you can walk.
