Try the trial?... This game has mixed reviews and don't know what to think when I read things here,..

The list of games I have played are:

Asheron's Call, SWG, WOW, and Dark Age of Camlot..  with that in mind,   is the game play about the same?

I just want to find a good game to play and don't want to waste my time with a game that sucks now but in a year or 2 might be good...

Been there done that:
Asherons Call,SWG,AOC,D&D,COH,Anarchy Online,DAOC,EVE,Guild Wars,LOTRO,POTBS,WAR,WW2, and Rift

Well, you are in luck.  The game is good now, and in a year or 2 it will be even better.

Seriously though, without downloading the trial and trying it for yourself, it will be hard for you to decide if this is a game you will have fun playing.  There are many players that find the game fun, and enjoy it a lot (like myself).  But there are also those players who find it is not the game for them.

So, you will be the only one who can ultimately decide if it is a "good game" or not for you.

I would recommend trying out the 7-day free trial.  I recently did and decided the game was good enough to purchase a retail copy.  I've been playing for about 3 weeks, have a 24 guardian (tank type), and usually find the game to be pretty fun.  I've played Eq1+2, Asheron's call 1+2, WoW, Eve and a few others.  So far I've found I like the game and the community seems to be fairly helpful, even if there aren't always a great deal of people your level depending on the times you play.  Still there are enough high levels willing to help and often enough similar level people doing the same quests / activites as you to be enjoyable.  The game seems to have a higher target-age crowd then WoW, which is good I believe.  Bottom line, try it out for yourself and see what you think.

I have no idea what the game is like now but i can tell you my short experience in the game.I was so turned off by the game that i can't even remember if i played a free trial or bought the game[yes i have a bad memory.First of all i didn't like the start in the bar or hotel whatever it was.Obviously being an rpgmmop ,first thing i wanted to try was some quests. This is what totally tuirned me off large. The quests made me feel like i was a 5yr old having his hand held. The quests basically led me thru linear hallways that no one on earth could possibly get lost.Following the very linear halls there was arrows pointing me in the direction to follow ,like i could possible mess it up in the linear hallways. Then there would be an arrow pointing exactly where/what i had to touch grab whatever. It was like "SEE this arrow dummy it's right HERE you can't miss it,cus this huge arrow is showing you where it is".I was so turned off i made a quick exit and deleted the game off my HD.

It is possible the rest of the game later on was much better, but the first quests i did left me not wanting anymore.

Only you can decide by downloading the trial...if your comp can handle it, do the high-res file.  I DL'ed it Black Friday (then bought it that Saturday afternoon) and have a level 13 Minstrel on 1 server and a level 11 Loremaster on another...

Give the trial a shot, then come back to us with your result.

Umm...are you sure you're talking about the correct game?  I've played each race at least once and don't recall any of them starting in a bar or hotel, and nothing like what you've explained here.  It actually reminds me more of Dungeons and Dragons Online, and even then just the "tutorial" place...

The game described above is definitely not LotRO.

LotRO is an awesome game. I recently purchased both WoW and LotRO to see which one I would like better. These were both my first MMORPG's. While WoW does have a much larger population, I am definitely enjoying LotRO much more, and am giving up on WoW. The graphics are awesome in LotRO (if you have a powerful enough PC), and the storyline is great. Everything about WoW just comes off a bit cheesy to me, from the graphics and character design to the way the interface itself works. LotRO just seems like a much more polished game IMO. Everything just seems a lot "tighter", for lack of a better word, in LotRO. I'm hoping that LotRO has many more years of success ahead!

LOL...your post matches your Avatar and this smiley

I have to agree with the other two that posted that the game you are describing isn't LOTRO...I have started an elf and a man so far and 1 started in a jail and the other a town square type place.

Maybe it would be worth your time to DL it and see for yourself....might actually run into a game you like?

This game is great for PVE, atmosphere and storyline. If those lkinds of thing make you enjoy MMORPgs, then I highly recommend playing LOTRO. PvP is the only major hole in LOTRO. If you like combat against another player, its not for you. Also, there is a lack of huge Mega Army battles etc. Some people who watched the movies could be dissappointed if they were expecting events like that

You can't even scratch the surface below level 15 at least.

And you can progress a LOT further then level 15 on the 7-day free trial, so there is no point in "not even trying".

Also, this has been discussed before: you definitely don't need to be a LOTR fan to enjoy it (I am not one in particular). On the flip side, a lot of hardcore LOTR fans just hate the game, for all kinds of reasons (not open enough, not skill based, not a sandbox game, not enough lore/too much lore etc etc... :)

It's better to be open minden to try this game, than to be a LOTR fan imho (anyways, it's been out for over 6 months now, probably all diehard fans tried it already :)

It is one of the last bastions with a true rpg feel instead of in my opinion the breed of common arcade style mmorpg's.

The lotro classes are designed to mesh well with each other in a grouping sense.

This game isn't for everyone but it is for me and that surprised me. I have found a home away from wow nutters elite kids and gold farmers/spammers.  I have never met a company so aggressive in their ways to rid the gaming world of things that would ruin the immersion and gameplay.

My hat is off to turbine and codemasters

    This post is like saying:

If you are a fan of traveling, then give driving a try, if you are like me and think driving is nothing more than an ok form of transportation, then don't waste your time.  I lost interest driving 8 miles, if figured I was doing the same thing walking my neighborhood and I know my entire neighborhood so I will just stay at home.

Your post kind of mad me sad for you a little bit...but hey if you like not giving things a try so be it.  Sounds like you put in about 3-4 hours worth of game play.  Maybe that is a fair amount of time to try a game, but I even gave wow 3 days of the trial when I did it a while back.

I work full time, and tried the 7-day trial. True I spent a lot of free time playing but instead of power leveling I tried to complete all the quests I came across and still managed 16 levels. So leveling and an immense number of quests is part of the game in my experience so far. I'd try it out, wost case scenario is you waste a week, best case scenario you become seriously addicted and play until Turbine shuts down. Wait...maybe that is a bad thing.....anyways, try.

Very sorry i think the one poster was right it was DND as i also remember playing that game.HAHA like i said my memory is kinda bad but i do try tons of games ,very easy for my weak memory to forget one from the other. It was a truthful review ,just wrong game lol. That was my review of DnD lmao ,again sorry for wrong game confusion.I just like to make sure people get the right perspective of a game before the fanbois who feed the people nothing but ,BS about the game they love, they will never say anything bad about there game no matter what.In this case, was truly my mistake like i said.

Anyhow how often you see someone come on and admit they were wrong?  lol i doubt any? maybe a couple ,oh well go ahead and try LOTR maybe it is a good game.

I echo the above sentiments about trying for yourself. Do the trial. It's worth it, even if you don't like the game. That way you'll know for sure without wasting any money.

LOTRO is very story based, so in some fashion, it's linear, but in other's it's open ended. Depending on your race, you start in one of four starter areas, and after that are funneled into Breeland where you meet up with the rest of the races at about the same level (15). From there, you go into the Lone-Lands, and after a bit, it's a back and forth between the Lone-Lands and the North Downs. These are in two opposite directions and at this point, you really have two directions to go, north and east. Plus, there's a nice detour into Evendim for level 30 - 40 quests.

Like I said, much of the fun of LOTRO for me was experiencing the story of the quests, which are very well written, even if at their basics they follow similar quest patterns of all games. There are the gems related to the LOTR universe which, as a fan, I highly enjoy.

Give it a shot. See what you think.

I love the PVP of LOTRO, it's 100% optional and is really funny!
