Server merge on the horizon

I did not locate the original thread to which the OP refers, but it appears somewhere the Devs were alluding to a server merge- of some flavor - next year.

Odd, though, that free character transfers were taken off the table.  I thought that would be the best solution- which is why SOE won't do it.  Some kind of forced merge, which should open up all kinds of amusing possibilities.

A server merge was dismissed by the dev team for this year. Many fans are crying out for something because, as stated, some servers are really empty.

Seeing the transfer system offline again, shouldnt raise any eyebrows. Its been on and offline many times throughout the past two years.  A server merge really is the best option but will need careful planning.

I wouldn't be surprised if you wake up one day, and they did it without telling anyone ... and did it poorly

damn, people are still playing and paying for this piece of crap ?

    cant believe it :)

  • Not worth the effort and headache at this point.  The game won't be around long enough.

If server mergers are on the horizon... that's a long friggin horizon.  They have needed to happen for quite some time now.  SOE is just too hard headed for their own good... too full of pride.  They won't roll back and they won't merge servers.

They could just have blinders on, too.  I don't know.  I think they are somewhat oblivious to the fact that they have fubar'd the game.  Or they are are too full of themselves and actually think they are doing a great job?

    I can't believe that!

I don't play but isn't the NGE more group oriented than it used to be? Hell of a time to decrease the solo play if it is.

This doesn't mean it's going to happen, there's a huge rise in server merge demands on the forums, but devs has said it's not happening this year nor has said anything about 2008... They seem focused on other things right now especially chapter 8 and the planned chapter 9.

They also need to get the character transfer service back up online, there's a growing number of customers waiting to get their chars moved. They need to lower the damn price on it as well.

To be honest though - with all the actual paying/playing subscribers - they only need 2-3 servers operational.

This could save them a lot of money in maintenance if they done it.

I bet its part of the contract to have x amount of servers running, now would that be funny or what....

I've said before I think there may be a decent game in there, if there was a population to interact with.  If they do merge servers, I'll go back at least as long as a free trial to test my theory.  However, that would be the last effort on my part.  If the game still blows with a group- hasta la bye bye.

But as someone else said, it may be too late.  SOE waited way too long to come around to this decision and are still dragging their feet.

By decent I assume you mean mediocre?

Decent = acceptable. Not top 'o the line, but not bottom 'o the barrel.

    Um,  yeah.  I guess mediocre

Geez, it's not like they've done anything like that in the past now is it?

I mean, maybe once or twice, but I hardly doubt they would do it a third time right? lol!

They want server merges yet the game is just fine and lots of people are playing! Give me a break. We never heard the words server merge pre-cu, or even in the CU.

I know this is a little off topic. But can someone please explain to me why all of a sudden ever since EA bought Bioware, I've been hearing rumors about a Harry Potter MMO???? Don't get me wrong, I liked the books and the movies were entertaining. But I think Bioware would have better things to do with their time (like making a KOTOR MMO lol! Hey, all evidence seems to point that way).

I'd think a Harry Potter MMO would be very story driven, very unworkable as a sandbox game.  Harry Potter's nominal audience (tweens to early teens) probably would very much like the gameplay to be as much like the books as possible.  The structure of the books is very quest oriented, so it makes sense that BioWare, which is very much into linear story driven games, would feel at home working with the Harry Potter IP in a very linear story driven way.

The catch of course is that BioWare's previous games have not been MMOs, where you can't have an "endgame" like you can with KOTOR.  You're supposed to be retaining customers, not telling them "thanks for all the fish" when they hit the level cap.

Ya what if there is a contract agreement for a minimum amount of servers.

Or a clause that says LEC must approve mergers, server shut downs, or even roll backs.

I mean nobody has ever produced a contract that actually showed me what freedom SOE has with this IP.  I can't see SOE really wanting to run this game with the current amount of servers vs. population.  They dropped Vanguard down to 4 and the game has actually slowly improved over time.

I really find it odd that they make no real attempt to improve SWG...  I'm sorry but it just always has seemed "off".

This is a good point and one of  the reasons I've always felt LA has had more of a hand in this debaucle than is let on.

It's easy to point a finger at SOE and blame Smed for everything but it could be his hands are tied, or at least tangled.  Say what you will about SOE, they are a leader in this business.  You don't obtain that position being run by morons, which is exactly how SOE-haters view Smed & Co.  Maybe server merges are slow in coming because LA has a tight grip on the game and are difficult to convince.  This could be true about much of the cause of SWGs fall.

This is a very good point; this is a partnership, and one partner is in the position of vetoing almost anything the actual working partner comes up with.

Which means that the NGE didn't happen without Lucas Arts' approval.

I'm sure it must be frustrating to be part of the working partner team and have your ideas vetoed with little or no explanation provided or required.

Damn fine post tman..its all too easy to blame SOE think its time some ire was handed over to LA and lucas himself in general tbh..i havent forgiven him for jarjar binks!!

LucasArts could very much have alot to do with the NGE, but look at SOE's other titles- SOE aren't that much better than LA (or EA for that matter). SOE should have stayed with EQ, their other titles just falls over and rolls down the hill after release.
