I will be buying this game - Rating = 9/10

After playing being in beta for approximately 1 month I will be buying this game without a doubt.  This game has by far the most complex and organized crafting system out of any mmo I have ever played.  I will be playing this game for the economy alone.  Everything else is just a bonus.

As a freetrader, I spent my entire time playing the market.  I would scour the ports for cheap resources to buy and create ships for my nation.  Building one ship has like a 200 step process.  It dwarfs any crafting experience I've ever had.  It is entirely a player driven economy where you are FORCED to buy goods from other people to function at your maximum potention.  Everything down to nails and iron fitting are created via players.  A person has a vast choice of things to produce.  Want to be a weaponsmith and produce cannons and ammo? Sure!  Want to build ships? Sure!  What to produce rum? Sure! Sails? Rigging? Hulls? Planks? Provisions?  The list goes on and on.  Moving goods from one port to another (buying low/selling high) is also very feasible to add some doubloons in your pocket.

The combat side of the game at level 50 is pvp orientated where you try to "flip ports" (conquer enemy towns).  Each port has certain resources assigned to it.  For example, a port may have a deep water harbor (only place that huge ships can be made).  Flipping this port to your favor can gouge the enemy because they now have to pay a high amount of taxes for labor used to create ships there.  Everything in this game has a cause and effect relationship.  Everything is based on beating the other nations/pirates.

If you are looking for Korean-style grindfest MMO where some people equate the difficulty of a game with the amount of time needed to level, this probably is not the game for you.  This game is all about your skill in naval warfare and has nothing to do with the amount of time you have available in your parents basement.  Using your brain, and thinking ahead, is what makes you a great captain - not the fact that you had to grind spot X for Y number of days, and now have uber sword Z.  Thats what makes this game so special.

Of course with Pros, there are also Cons.  The largest con is the avatar combat.  It seems as though this phase of the game was rushed in and not polished.  The entire balance/initiative swashbuckling system just seems a little odd and out of place in this game.  This game would have been fine with just the economy and ship combat.  The good news is that it is only a small portion of the game, and there is only one way to go with it, and thats up.

I would urge people to try open beta before making up their minds.  Give the game an honest effort, and you will be surprised.  This was about as unbiased a review as I could write.  I created an account just do I could post this.  Have a great day!

Kate

p.s. The game is VERY stable.  That in itself is a rare feat in today's mmo betas/launches.

I just read through your post fast, sorry.

I wonder though would you be willing to pay for escort service, let us say... 20% of profit?

I'm so broke. I can't even pay attention.

Was in closed beta for the last 5 months or so and honestly you hit on the major points of the game pretty well.  The avatar combat is still really rough though you should have seen it 4 months back lol.  I think it will get better though like you said just needs tweaking and polish.

My opinion is more of the you will either love the game or absolutely hate it.  I've read opinions from people upset you couldn't fight sea monters and whales lol.  This is NOT the market that will enjoy this game, its a historical based naval mmo.  If you are looking for orcs on boats or sea monsters I suggest you look for something else.

I'd give the game a 8 atm, its in good shape and will have a verys stable release, but like EVE its a niche market game that will find its audience.

Trading isn't all that great. Basically, you buy something, then point your boat to the othe side of the world, then go watch tv for a half hour. When you get to the other side of the world, you sell you goods, then repeat

Don't think its the act of trading that people like, its the watching the market and looking for their chance to profit  I myself rarely play the market in MMO's its just not my thing, but I've had many guildies that couldn't get enough of buying and selling on the markets.  I guess to each his own.

I am ALWAYS suspicious of people who join these forums just to give a game a rainbow and lollipops review.

Well, nice to see a positive review (though I do wish it hadn't come from someone who just joined the forums, but oh well).

Here's a question though, the crafting system is described as intricate and detailed, and everything is extremely player driven.  Great, except I hate crafting.

Is it possible for a player to play and prosper and not participate in the crafting system? I find that most games that take the time to put in detailed crafting expect every player to, well, craft.  (did I mention that I hate crafting?)

I guess I'm going to have to take some time to give the game a trial and see for myself how it plays.

BTW.... I hate crafting.... I'm sure I mentioned that.

Yes, you don't have to craft to be able to play. I know you said you hate crafting, but it's entirely different in this game. I don't hate crafting, but I dislike it in any other game. I find it a nuisance at best. In this game however, I'm actually having fun with it. If you set up a simple production line, you don't need to spend more than 5-10 minutes a day producing goods and selling them on the AH with a bit of profit. Last night, I spend about an hour setting up some simple production. Today, I spent around 5 minutes producing a ton of items with the labour hours I had saved up while I was sleeping. Put the stuff on the AH, and was sold out 30 minutes later. Made several k profit. I can now buy a nice new ship

Friday :) And yeah, it's open to all, so everyone can form their own opinion about the game. You might even check out production (aka 'crafting').
BTW.... I hate crafting.... I'm sure I mentioned that.
Well, you can always try? :D

Gotta start somewhere.  I'm sure you had one post once upon a time.  This was the first game that I felt strongly enough to create an account here.  I've been playing MMO's for a long time - starting with DAOC.

Yes,  you do not have to craft to be successful at this game.  Crafters are there to supply people like yourself the tools (i.e. ships, ammo, rigging) to kick butt in pvp.     For example, my boyfriend hates crafting with a passion, I love it.  He just pvp's all day long and I take care of the crafting.  Infact, I use his lots :)

When open beta is open to the public (not just fileplanet subscribers) you should give it a whirl and decide for yourself.
