I have a dream.
Well yeah it's a pipe dream but hey it's still a dream. Everybody plays MMORPG's so they can make some awesome character. They might be a team player or a lone wolf, but everybody wants their character to be that epic individual. We all want that character that is unique & even legendary in some way.
The problem is that no game has given us that. The sad part is that as they are right now they won't give us that. It'd be great to have a game where even a casual gamer can make a character that is legendary on the server. A game where being at max level or what ever the cap system is , actually means something other than “you didn't move on to a different game”. A game where economics actually worked realistically. A game where crafting was a critical part of the world system. Personally I hate level grinding but it seems most players love it. I guess it makes them feel they are building something. It's a shame developers only seem to build games where the only meaningful building a player can do is leveling. If
Well I have a challenge for any developer that would dare take it.
Have at least one server with permanent death for characters. This isn't as harsh as some would think. Make the “leveling” slightly less risky and give each character a few free deaths to get them rolling along. In a skill based game this would be much easier is it is self balancing, unlike level based games that revolve around classes . This one thing makes a huge difference in a game world. Hell a casual gamer that made it to max level would only add to the mystique of a legendary character by being logged on rarely. Perma death would also help the economy of the game. As characters die their gear & banked money fade from the game. Assassination actually has value other than griefing. Imagine a billionaire crafter that has to pay other players to be bodyguards when they are in public. Even player thievery would be meaningful. If you have nothing to loose you really have no challenge. Where is the fun a building something when you can't fail .
A perma death server would enhance a game in every way. The role play and PvP would have meaning. Since this is rather extreme for most gamers their would have to be some perk for playing, and that can be as simple as faster leveling since the Tread mill won't be the purpose of the server.
The simplest way to generate this , is to give an EXP bonus to remove or reduce the grinding. This would INSTANTLY shift the game from one of the endless multitudes of tread mill games , to an actual story driven game.

Perma death only lends itself well to games in which survival is relatively easy. Anyone that played DAoC will know what I'm talking about when I say death is sometimes entirely unavoidable. Being ganked by a 50 man squad from an enemy realm isn't something you can prevent or fight against, and if you were on a perma-death server this would result in the loss of your character forever.
Unlike DAoC, RvR in WAR isn't going to be quite as optional either. WAR will be everywhere, as we're constantly told by Mythic, and I can't see anybody wanting to play on a perma death server when death is so inevitable.
I am also a believer of the pro-permadeath-server arguments. I would love to see it.
But Hohbein is right: In WAR we will die A LOT. So I don´t think it will make much sense for THIS game.
Otherwise I share your dream.
Dofus is starting up a perma death server. Only thing is how many people are interested in perma death in a turn based tactical game?
You have a lot of good arguments. It would certainly give meaning to bounties, assassinations, hired muscle.. so on and so forth. However, in a game that is so focused on the player versus player aspect, it is very difficult to see how it would work successfully. It could work well, but like others have said.. not in this game.
A game would have to be in a political and economical setting. Where PvP is there, but no the focus. There can't be a game where you are constantly in danger. You would end up with a game with big elaborate plans for PvP zones, keep sieging, etc.. and no one doing those things because they are too afraid of losing everything they worked for at the click of someone elses mouse.
Ultima Online, back when it was new.. would have been the typical setting for this kind of idea. They had a few servers that didn't involve any npc vendors at all, players had to collect things themselves, crafters were actually a huge part of the game, and you could steal, loot, kill other players wherever you wanted to besides town. There weren't any perma-death servers though.
You could go back to Diablo 2.
why ask for it if u want a water down version of it? u know as well everyone will just hide behind guards and afraid to die and how is that suppose be more fun?
For servers like this to be good, the game would have to be built around it, not be thrown in as an after the fact type of server. It would also be a waste of resources seeing as few people would play on it as anything other than a "my server is down for maintenance so I am here while I wait" server.
Sorry, no.
This is more like a nightmare than a dream.
The real challenge for any developer would be to try and dare make a profit on a game mechanic that has already been soundly rejected by the majority of MMO players.
Actually, the whole argument for permadeath servers is pretty much ... well ... permadead.

A few posts up I made mention of Dofus adding a Hardcore server ( perma death). This is supposed to take place this month. The one thing that makes it's success or failure matter little to the market though is the fact that it is a 2D isometric turn based tactic mmo. So someone has wasted the time and resources to try it in the face of the masses who have rejected it. If you yearn so bad for a developer to try it I have provided you information of one.
Keep dreaming sir. While it may seem cool to survive in a permadeath setting, you must realize that you cannot avoid death easily in this game. You can't go stealth so you can't cloak your cowardice and remain alive for long in the game. You are thrown in conflict where PvP is a major aspect of the game. Sure you can play in PvE zones, but that doesn't mean a bad pull or a few bad combt rolls won't mean the end of your beloved character. Of course the old linkdeath will always linger to stymie permadeath proponents.
Take the Magic: The Gathering 'What Color Are You?' Quiz.
This is great. We always come across a few of these posts with any game offering PVP as a major part of the game systems.
perma death can be in any game YOU wish to have it in, and here is how...
The next time you are playing any MMO, and you die....wait for it, here it comes....
Go delete your character. Holy crap its perma death in any mmo without a dev lifting a finger...genius!
basically what I am saying is this, if you ant it, you can play it. most people who are sane, do not wish to lose any of their efforts to uncontrollable encounters.
LOL! Made me laugh at that one.

<--- Permadead guy.
<--- Oh look, I'm back now with a new character.

The only real permadeath would be when you character dies and they close and ban your account from ever being reopened. Otherwise, a Permadeath Server is basically a Constant Reroll Server.
That may sound like "fun" to some people, but not to me.

It's an interesting idea but I don't know how it could ever be done.
Seeing as how even the best of players takes their share of dirt naps, all you'd see on a permadeath server is a metric ton of level 1 toons starting from scratch after their latest adventure ended in a wooden coat.
u posted this in the pub and ill say the exact same thing i said there..
this has been discussed a million times, unless perma death is done right it wont work, nuff said
If the OP wants this to be a reality then don't offer any 'challenge' to developers.
Go out, earn $30 million and make your own perma-death MMOPRG. Because you'd have to design the game from the ground-up with such a significant mechanic like perma-death otherwise you're just tacking it onto a game not designed for it.. And it wouldn't work any better than other systems that have been tacked onto games as afterthoughts.
And after you make your $30 million permadeath MMORPG get ready to lose all your investment and watch your game go bankrupt when players realize permadeath is a completely unplayable game mechanic that can result in months (or even years) of effort lost because of something known as LAG.
Unless the OP can suggest a method to completely remove lag from the Internet, in which case they'll be earning a heck of a lot more than $30 million.
I'm not holding my breath to see them do this.
The last game I heard that had permadeath mechanic was born stillborn, and that was Mourning. It didn't work in the beta, and that game was built around it. In that game the only way to come back from death was by another player casting a resurrect type spell. It still failed, but that game really died due to poor handling. Just the same in the beta the mechanic did not work well, especially since it was an FFA PvP game, and the devs would camp kill and resurrect people, then kill them again, rinse and repeat.
To me permadeath is just not a good idea in MMO's.
MMO Vet since AOL Neverwinter Nights circa 1992. My MMO beat up your MMO. =S
so what your saying is you want to put a permadeath server on a game that is pvp based
thats briliant!!!!
