I copied this from another post I made yesterday to another new player.....it will help you as well.

Here's the deal, mission running is sort of ground zero.... you really need to start there and learn to master them, before proceeding with the rest of the game...consider it your "foundation" into EVE.

Perhaps you failed to make a proper character, if so, here's a great guide to make sure you do it correctly.

    wiki.goonfleet.com/index.php

Next, make sure you learn the basics, you must be sure to do the tutorial, all the way through...you'll come out of it with a couple of nice mission running ships (esp if you decide to make a Caldari, which i recommend for new players)

Now, time to do some reading, be sure to read a new players guide or three...a quick Google search will turn up many of them.... but this is a great place to start.....

    www.allabouteveonline.net/Player%20Guides/BattleClinics_EVE_online_Guide-1.pdf

Pay special attention to the section about the importance of learning skills.

Now, if mining is your forte, (its not mine, there's lots to learn about it.... no place better for that than this guide here:

    www.allabouteveonline.net/Player%20Guides/completeminersguide_ver2.0.1halada.pdf

Tell you what, just check out this link, it has guides for just about every facet of EVE.....

    www.allabouteveonline.net/playerguides.htm

Next, do the tutorial....(just making sure)

Now, really important, don't go it alone.... EVE is a lonely place without a Corporation... consider joining EVE University right off the bat...they'll even take trials.... and they exist just to train new players into the game.... you can always join another corp later on...won't hurt their feelings...

    www.eve-db.com/corporations/354.htm

Crafting is very important in this game....since we all spend a lot of our time blowing up each other's ships, someone has to keep making new ones...... its a wonderful cycle.

You can craft Ships, Tier 2 modules, POS equipment  (Tier one aren't much use) and some other parts which go into the production of each....

Other occupations, Pirate, Trader, Explorer, 0.0 ratter/miner etc etc..... heck, scamming is a legal way to make money....no one will stop you if you can get away with it...(except maybe the players you piss off)

Good luck and I hope you find your place in EVE.....

Do the tutorial all the way through, several times if necessary. You'll come out with a couple of nice starting frigates (much better than the IBIS you begin with) and a much better understanding of the game.

Who the hell are you, and why should I care?

Keep in mind the server is down at the moment for the Trinity patch.  No telling exactly when it will be back up, but it should be up by later tonight.  Definitely by tomorrow.

Start the trial like a week after the expansion lol

I was thinking of downloading the trial, but I have one question. If I start to dowload it now (well, lets say tomorrow), can I patch the trial to the new version (with the expansion) when it comes available or do I have to download a new trial (with the expansion), like in EQ2? I'd really like to see the new graphics.

It is all in the same universe, so it is the actual full game, newest patch/update. At least, that's my theory.

    Yep.

The "trial" client is the same as the full client - only the accounts are different. This means that your's will autoupdate to the latest version just like everyone else's.

You will also have access to the new premium graphics content (premium in features, not price) if you have a graphics card that supports SM3, i.e. a GeForce 6000 series or better, or a Radeon X1000 series or better.
