I can't speak for anyone else, but I don't think it's a matter of the older mmogs being better but that the newer games that I've playedare basically just derivatives of EQ. I hope someone comes along and makes a great game that's not dependent on the treadmill and has a variety of content.
Were those games better than most of those on the market? I would agree with you that they are. But there are some serious flaws in those games, all eras of them.
I've only started playing MMORPGs this year, and older games like EverQuest, for example, just feel so primitive. I'm not really talking about graphics and sound, but how the controls work.
Everquest was my first MMO, I played it as early as 13 (when it first came out 5 years ago)... of course by that stage i didn't have the patience to get a character beyond lvl 35.
Then I came back with a better general knowledge of how things worked and raised a 62 ranger.
Between these times, I have played Asheron's Call 2, UO (player shard), Anarchy Online, Shadowbane, Dark Age of Camelot.... Everquest drew me back, I cannot find another MMO that will replace everquest.
I was excited about horizons... but that turned out to be one of THE CRAPPIEST mmo's i've ever played.
Future looks bright with EQ2, WoW, and Dragon Empires... oh and GuildWars, not pay to play, so i'll buy it anyways.
In all, I'd return to EQ over any other MMO at the moment... except education comes first.
Its just that the first MMOs you played it was a great experience because you were knew to the genre. And then every MMO you play after it you expect it to be just as good, but it will rarely be.
My favorite MMO was motor city online, but looking back at it it had ALOT of flaws, but it was still sweet as hell at the time. ^^
I bet alot of MMOers would say their first MMO was thier favorite.

I'd say that my first rpg was The 4th Coming, which most don't know. But after 5 years, after everquest, and FFXI, and DAoC, i came back to that again. I also have played a space sim game called Jumpgate, and where it may not be a true RPG game, i go back to that, which does not have the huge graphics and such, but because it just seems so rare. I am sort of disappointed in all the games after EQ though, cause well, they all seem to be the same, cept different story line and different items and maybe character classes. Controls are for the most part the same, the leveling scheme is pretty much alike, and well after 2-3 months, it gets really annoying to spend tons of time leveling. So i'd have to say that some of the older games are better, cause where the graphics may stink, the gameplay is far better. All imho though.

It's called nostalgia.
