Deep char customization, lots of skills. No lvl caps on gear, twink your alts all you can. Big death penalty, i wanna be really scared of dieing, both in pvp and pve. Lots of crafting available, not just some items per lvl range.

wow char development is a joke. And with 9000 millon players there is absolutely 0 things left to try. On every server you have hundreds of clonsed running around being unoriginal.
Twinking or just generarlly equipping your other chars is pointless. Best way to sucsess is to grind bg for millons of years. Gets really fun in the long run.

WoW has alot of charactor customization, you can pick from 5 different races from 2 different faction. With each charactor, you gain access too bunch of class racial skills. Not only that you can pick from bunch of class that add more skill to your hotbar.
WoW has no level cap on gears, you pretty much get any gear that you can get from your toon. But to stop people from take advange of this system blizzard implied a system so high level charactors wont farm high level items and give it to low level noobs.

If you die in World PvE, you start back from a Graveyard and have to run back to your corpse, and depending how far you die from the graveyard, you have like 10-20 mins of running. Blizzard made it hard for you to go afk while auto-running because you can run in to trees and stuff. And if your being corpse farmed then you have to rez at the graveyard.
But rezing at the graveyard, it take like 15 mins to get that rez sickness off you, and you cant kill anything because your hella weak. Then if you spend 2-3 hours in an instance and get to the final boss and wipe. You have to start all over again if you dont have any self-rez ablities.

To the OP, EVE has a really deep crafting system, character customization is nice but your ship will be just like other ships of the same kind. Not that it matters that much really, specially since Trinity. Boy, do they look good. Death penalty is harsh, losing your ship and getting it looted... and if you get pod killed, boy, you lose implants and whatnot, huge hit in the wallet. There is literally a saying among EVE players: "Do not fly what you can't afford to lose". You gotta train in order to use different ships/equip/whatever, and it is all in real time and does not require you to grind. But yeah, you can jump in and after a month have the skills to fly a tech2 ship. You could even be killing players in a couple of weeks or so.
But, if sci-fi is not your thing, maybe you will like EQ2. Deep crafting system, tons of different classes and races, death penalty is not that big, but it is annoying enough for you to want to avoid it.

Probably Anarchy Online or Eve Online. WoW doesn't have any of those qualities. Except maybe the crafting, but thats still level ranges.
