Im a little confused on corporations. Are they controlled by NPC's, real players, or both? How do i join one? What are the benefits?
Ive tried doing some research but i only seem to get list of corporation names and what the corporations do. Ive been questing for about a week now and the quests are becoming more and more repetitive and so i want to try something different. Mining is ok but i dont want to spend the majority of my time with the game minimized while i let my ship mine all day. I heard about corporations and that they have "great" benefits but i would like more information before joining one.

There are player run corporations and npc corporations. You are interested in the player ones I take it.
Join the recruitment channel and you'll find lots of noob corps advertising for members, or just start out in EVE University....more info can be found at this link....

Check out the show info tab for the corps in the system you are currently located in. This will give you an Idea of the corps that are active in your area. The attributes tab and the players sec status will also tell you allot about the corp. It's also good to notice if the corp is in an alliance. Alliance/corps tend to be more powerful, but can also be demanding on new players (defiantly not the take it slow approach). If you see a corp that you would like to fly with....Talk to them (this last part is very good advice).
Deciding which direction you want too go will be a big help for you, i.e. missioning, ratting, Pirate etc...If you are unsure look for Eve University as they will help you on your way. You will need a way to make isk(money) as you will lose a ship eventually.
Also try not to call them quests as it will get ya flamed, they are missions.
