Who saw it?
Personally, I went in with semi-low expectations and was pleasantly surprised. Dakota Blue Richards does an awesome job as Lyra, and of course Nicole Kidman is always a pleasure to watch. Very good performances all around, I think, except for the direction.
My only complaint is with the director who REALLY seemed to rush everything. It could have gone 2:30 at least, but instead, things seemed to flash by far too quickly for anyone to settle down and become attached to the other characters. At any rate, it was better than the first Potter movie, and a far cry better than Eragon. Lets hope it does well in the box office, then maybe we can get the two sequels with a new director.

Watched it with low expectations as well. Thought it was okay, nothing great.
I thought it was okay, for a kids movie. Too many times I was asking myself "Why would you do that?" I really liked the story, and the world that they were living in. I thought that the movie just started getting good.. and then the credits started rolling. It seems like they just wanted a cheap way to get you to watch a sequel. The movie should have been longer.
I thought the movie was quite good.

I read the trilogy. Loved it. Specially the first book.
Watched the movie today. I don't really know. It was ok I guess. They had altered some stuff, and towards the end it really changed quite a bit, and it all progressed way to fast.
Also I didn't liked how they toned down the religious criticism that you find in the books. Makes the "Dust" and all the stuff relating to it seem kinda stupid. If they didn't want to include the criticism they should have explained the whole backstory/backdrop in a better way.
I only have this to say:
Ms. Coulter (in a Vader like tone): Lord Azrael never told you what happened to your parents, did he?
Lyra(hanging on from the pipes on the Bespin Abyss) He told me enough... he told me you killed them!
Ms. Coulter: No Lyra, I am your Mother!
Lyra: That's not true! That's IMPOSSIBLE!
Ms. Coulter: Search your golden compass Lyra, you know it to be true.
Lyra: NOOOOOOOOO!!!!!
Ms. Coulter: Join me, and with the golden compass I will teach you the power of the Magisterium! We can rule all the parallel universes as mother and daughter!
(Lyra falls off bespin cloud city abyss thingy)
Haha Thought the exact same thing while that scene unfolded on the screen.
Scorsby (the cow boy character: Your friend here says that you might be looking for some hired help. My name is Scorsby-Solo, and this is my co-pilot eyorick-bacca (the polar bear) we're pilots of the millenium airship.
Lyra: Millenium airship?
Scorsby: You've never heard of the Millenium airship? it's the airship that made the trip from here to the north lands in less than 15 parsecs!
I suggest you all read the books, they cut out a lot of parts in the movies to make it more "family friendly". >:(
And its badly edited, imo.
I went in with low expectations and left with just the same perception about the movie.
It was dry to me with too many cliches. The special effects were ok, but nothing amazing. It's more like a good rentable movie versus a movie spending 8 bucks on.
People who have to create conspiracy and hate threads to further a cause lacks in intellectual comprehension of diversity.
I have low expectations for this movie. So low that I have little intention to pay $9 to see it. Perhaps if I see some great reviews I will, but from the early accounts, I have a feeling this is going to be another LOTRO wanna-be that goes bust
Torrential
Torrential: DAOC (Pendragon)
Awned: World of Warcraft (Lothar)
Torren: Warhammer Online (Praag)
It only made $26 million this opening weekend, so I'd call that a bust. If not a bust, then maybe "underwhelming". Serves it right for cutting out the religious aspects. I only wish that the Narnia movie had suffered the same fate (for the same reason).
I went and saw it with my fiancee. I thought it funny as heck when my fiancee pointed out that the Magisterium sounded like the Catholic Church and she knew nothing of the book or the debate regarding the movie. I'm not sure if a "child" would pick up on it but a teenager who knows of the Catholic Church's past probably would (so if this bothers you, for whatever reason, than I'd say avoid the movie or taking your child to see it). Of course this movie is PG-13, so it IS meant for teenagers +....unless you want your younger child to watch a snow bear have his lower jaw removed in a fight to the death (there was a satisfying OMG sound in the movie theatre from parents who were obviously suprised by that..dumbasses).
As to the movie itself, it was alright. I'm just not a huge fan of sci-fi / fantasy flicks where children / teenagers are the main characters..ie Eragon, Chronicles of Narnia, Harry Potter (I just prefer a more adult oriented plot..if it is possible in a "fantasy" setting). The movie itself didn't seem to flow real well (IMO). Having never read Harry Potter, Narnia or Lord of the Ring, these movies didn't leave me feeling like I was missing a lot of information / character development the way the Golden Compass did.
She didn't say they got cookies too?
