Have they said anything about the character creation system? Will we be able to tweak facial features with sliders or will it be pretty basic (WoW). This has always been a big deal to me in any mmo. I can't stand all the clones in WoW.

I would guess that it will be something similar to DAOCs. Probably not the greatest character creation system, but my guess is yes its similar to that of WoWs with a selection of faces, hair types, hair color, and so forth.
That's really about all the customization I need. I could care less about the little things like eye color for example, because who the hell notices your characters eye color in a game. Half the time it will probably be covered by a helmet or mask anyways.
Character creation is rather low on my desires of a great mmo.
Personally its cool when games have the sliders for making your character appear unique in your mind. But most often the changes are so subtle you still look the same as several hundred other players. Not to mention its just one more thing that can screw up a game if its bugged. Why bother with it if they give you some really varied pre defined templates for stuff?
Super character creation control is pretty low on the necessary list to get me to enjoy a game..to me its just an added bonus when games I like have it.

I can't really agree with the "cloning" thing. Yes there are a mandatory templates that you must choose from when making your character but as stated previously, nobody notices your characters eye color, or if it's lips are fuller or anything to that effect. If you are worried about having your character stand out from the crowd however don't forget that Mythic is using a dye system to put various color tints to your toons armor, also they have the trophy system to help further the unique look for each player. All in all nothing has been released from what I know regarding character creation but at the same time I don't think it will be a big issue.
P.S. I love the video of the chicken
Character creation follow DAOC, each race will have certain stats, and the player will have a pool of points to assign.
All characters in WAR have the same stats; though, different stats are obviously more important to different classes than others. There are no starting stats to distribute at character creation and stats automatically rise as you level based on their importance to your class.
Each character in WAR has a set of eight statistics:
Strength - Increases the damage you deal with melee weapons.
Willpower - Increases your chance to disrupt enemy spells.
Toughness - Reduces the damage dealt to you from all sources.
Wounds - Increases your hit points.
Initiative - Increases your chance to evade melee and ranged attacks.
Weapon Skill - Increases your chance to critically hit with melee attacks and your chance to parry an enemies attacks. Reduces the chance that melee attacks will be blocked, parried, or evaded by your enemy.
Ballistic Skill - Increases the damage you deal and your chance to critically hit with ranged attacks. Reduces the chance that ranged attacks will be blocked, or evaded by your enemy.
Intelligence - Increases the damage that you deal and the chance to critically hit with magical attacks. Reduces the chance that your magical attacks will be disrupted by your enemy.
There are also four magical resistances to protect against special attacks:
Lumina
Elemental
Corporeal
Spirit
Spoils of War - The quickest way of ending a war is to lose it.
i personally think the character creation in SWG and EQ2 are great with sliders and multiple tweeks. its very nice while you are in toon creation and character select screen, but then in game, you are looking at the back of your head 99% of the time so it dont really enhance the game very much apart from to add a personal touch to the toon, so imo it would be nice, but i can deffinately live without it
Yeah, you can't really depict any difference with some games such as EQ2. However, after watching my friend create a character in Age of Conan, you can make people look 100% different. I've can't believe how nice its creation system is.
fcwedd the thing is you may make your toon unique but even then once thousands of players are involved alot of it all starts to look the same. Not to mention no one's going to go Hey I know that guy! I recongize his face because quite frankly depending on a users settings they may look the same.
My point is...while character customization as far as char creation goes is fun and cool to tweek its not and should not be considered some necessary device to judge a game with. Vanguard had some fantastic stuff you could do to your character but that game ultimatly sucked at its launch.
If your going to promote Age of Conan because you can tweek the pinch of someone's nose or make them look cross eye'd honestly..thats just sad. You should want to play AoC or Warhammer because the gameplay is engaging and fun. Everything else is just fluff.

At this point though nobody can give you a 100% factual answer as to what WARs character creation system will be like.
Not Very friendly are we...cant just be a nice guy?
Not Very friendly are we...cant just be a nice guy?
This is considered being "not very friendly"? I was just pointing out that he loved AOCs character creation so maybe that is the game for him since he loves this feature.
However to update on my posts this might help answer the question of everyone looking the same.
So while Beta has been down, we've gotten character creation in and running, and the first batch of options for you to choose from. As we continue to iterate on it, we will have more and more options, and more sophisticated methods for you to select them; but for now, when you make a male Dwarf Engineer, it's not going to look like everyone else's male Dwarf Engineer. And that, of course, is the whole point.

I was definitely apt on AoC until I've learned of "Open PvP". While PvP is my #1 priority, I thoroughly enjoy factional PvP more. The good and evil races in WAR are clearly defined; it just seems to be more purposeful. Heh, it takes a lot more than the character creation to determine whether or not I play a game. Shoot, look at CoH's system... it's amazing. Too bad the game was boring as @#$!.
PvP is number one for me as well. I can never understand how people can get by with just PvE in their life.
Character creation is actually really important to alot of people, these days. I'm one of them. I don't wanna look like a clone, and having the ability to make your characters represent your ideas within the game is what makes it important to me.
But would you want more options on how your character looks when you make him, or would you want smoother gameplay, lots of itemization, etc.?
Does this feature make or break a game for you?
I would agree that it is probably really important to alot of people. But do you think the majority find it that important?
It's really hard for me to put character creation above pretty much anything else in an MMO. It functions as a secondary pleasure. I spend a few minutes creating his appearance but after that the real joy of the game comes from playing the pvp aspect, and gaining great rewards from my accomplishments as well as the actual achievement of accomplishing a difficult task. Then of course the gloating afterwards .
COH/COV definitely set the bar here and every character creation system must let compare itself to it.
It´s hard to say though how important it will be for WAR, because a lot of individuality in the later game seems to come from the pieces of armor and trophies you are wearing. So it depends on how much of the starting features can and will be "overridden".
Also I believe this will depend on the character you are playing. A deep creation system will be much more important for your Dark Elf Witch than for your Chaos Chosen.
It hope the creation will be as deep as they can make it. COH-level would be ideal for me, but not necessary to make a fun game.
Paul Barnett mentioned in his blog a while back that character customization was just being put in; however he gave no detailed description of how much customization would be available.
Personally, I feel it will not be up to the standards of SWG/CoH, but that does not really bother me.
With armor dyeing (which is in) and trophy-slots (which is in) and the Career Specialization which will alter the looks of your character depending on the skill route he chooses, I think you'll get enough individuality to satisfy most players.
I haven't seen it first hand, but I think it'll be all right.
Edit:
Just found this on WAR Herald....
Another issue that has been raised on the Beta forums concerns our plans for character creation. Before the Beta shut down you have no real choices when making a character as this system had not yet been implemented.
One of the focuses of the UI Team for the past few months has been to get Character Creation up and running. In Beta up until this point, players have only been allowed to select their career and gender before they jump into game and start playing. Of course, the biggest problem with that was that every single player who made a male Dwarf Engineer looked like every other player who had made a male Dwarf Engineer.
Obviously that is not our intent.
So one of our first decisions was how to make the process as interactive as possible. We want players to see their choices before they start eliminating their options. In DAoC, the very first choice in the game was to choose Hibernia, Midgard, or Albion before you even had a good sense of what that even meant. So the first thing you should see when you log into the game (other than the EULA) is all of the available race choices, right up front. They're standing in front of you, staring you down, and daring you to pick them.
Now, clearly we have more choices than you can see in a quick glance, so we had to make some decisions about what to show and when. Hopefully you'll find it easy to make decisions, and you'll feel not only informed about the decisions you have to make, but excited to make them.

I basically took an excerpt from that UI statement and put it in my post a few above this but yea I think character customization will be a medium between WoW and EQ2.
The one thing that doesn't come around in most MMO's is fatness (i'm not fat lol). It is a major detail that is very often not a characteristic to choose from.
But aside from that, the fact that you have trophies and dyes is all you could ask for anyways... you are gonna have armor and equipment covering your character up anyways.
In all honosty, if you were a person in the situation of an MMO and you were running all over the world swinging a 10 Lb weapon around, wearing some heavy armor or even studded leather, and harldy stopping to eat (let alone sleep)....you probably would be in fairly decent shape.
Picturing a fat Witch Elf just doesn't do it for me.
ok that's fair enough, put something else for the pansy races (elves).
picturing a fat human or dwarf or orc fits perfect with me.... or a fat chaos marauder, that'd be damn cool.
lol i can picture it now
"AIM FOR THE TUBBY ONE"
lol gold, pure gold
lmao, actually having a fat guy as a tank would be good, he'd block the way pretty well =]
Though we have heard of stupid haste in war, cleverness has never been seen associated with long delays.
-Sun Tzu, the Art of War
lol yeah 20 shamen hiding behind an obese orc "1 man shield wall" ftw
imo, it dosnt make much difference how your char looks under the armor... but as mentioned, it would actually be cool to chose the weight of your char and ofc to be able to decide how tall its gonna be, imagine a HUGE fat orc as tank
