Any similar sandboxes like SWG out there?

DirossDiross Member Posts: 179

Are they any games out there that come close to the original release of the Pre-CU SWG? I'm looking for a sandbox game where one could do anything, be anything, kind of game style. The old SWG filled a void in my gaming experience and since I left after the NGE, frankly it's been impossible for me to enjoy a mmorpg on the same level of gaming experiences I had in SWG.

If a gaming developer would just take our forum posting seriously, they'd instantly have a dedicated playerbase. What will it take to get their attention besides profit analysis graphs and revenue stream forcasts?

Eve-Online, EQ2, DnL, SWG (Dead), Guild Wars, Anarchy Online, EQ, DAoC, Planet Side, WoW, LOTR, Tabula Rasa.

Ultima Online for the most part, really the whole Pre-CU was just a dumbed down UO system... Well I wouldn't call it dumbed down, but well SWG did take alot from UO due to Koster being lead dev on both games.

Pre-CU wasn't a "dumbed down UO system" it was more of a spiritual successor to UO, if anything.  SWG took the skill based gameplay of UO and expanded upon it.  SWG offered a more robust skill system than UO, due to the level of customization within the skill trees.  Where UO has a single "Swordsmanship" skill, SWG had entire skill branches based on individual weapons.

UO has been utter crap since the Age of Shadows expansion made the game based more on looted artifacts than the character's skills.  It has been further destroyed by the addition of such craptastic additions as Elves and Ninja.

I have spent nearly two years searching for an online sandbox game that was anything at all like the good, old SWG but not found one. The closest I came was to the strange and unusual Eve which has its own immersive, complex economic/strategic dynamics. That game was good, I thought, but not really to my taste.

No other game like SWG. For the good and bad. But no other one like it.

Close thing to SWG is Ultima Online... but its old game, very very old :P

EVE also got Skill system, but its not usual MMO, more like "Spaceship Simulation MMO with big Industry System" ;p

The only game I found that was close to SWG was Ryzom. It doesnt get much more sandbox than that. It is however a sinking ship if it already hasnt died. Its to bad the game never had a real budget or the talented people that a real budget would have bought.

Have any of your looked at Asheron's Call?  Unless it has changed dramatically (not that I'm not rulling it out) it had a very nice skill based system.  Graphics suck and all my friends moved on so I don't play it any more, but it is still the game I judge all others (including SWG when I played it) to.

  • EvE Online.  It's sci fi, it's skills based, and it's a completely open virtual world.

I played AC (Asheron's Call) for 3+ years and had a grand time! It was my first mmorpg, but as much as I loved playing it, it didn't hold a candle to the gaming 'addiction' I developed when I started playing SWG at launch. I had moved onto AC2 briefly after it launched, but it was the massive AC2 revamps in June '03 that prompted me to cancel (and quite a few others as well) and try SWG. Sounds familiar?

AC did offer a skill based system which allowed a wide array of personalized  templates, but levels (126 at the time I played) were utilized. As old as the game is, it was always well supported and there was never a shortage of things/quests to do. It was great for solo and group players. There were PvP and PvE servers, and even on the PvE ones, you could go PK (player killer), but could only go after others that went the same route. It is something to consider, but the game is dated.

    EVE Online.

As a solo player without anyone you know to help you get started it is VERY difficult to identify how amazing the game is.  Try to find some friends who play and see if they can give you up to date pointers and walk throughs.  Also, don't even bother anyone ingame if you're too lazy to complete the tutorial.

yah, it used levels (higher than 126 now I believe) but it was an open skill game, no classes or required paths of advancement, which kinda fit the SWG model.  But yes, that sounds familiar, though I went the AO route instead of AC2.

It appears EvE is the only thing close atm, if you can get by the fact there is no ground game it is an amazing, thought  provoking  game.

Its funny when Earth and Beyond folded i had the choice of SWG or EvE. I chose SWG, it appears i was in error and am now happily playing EvE.

I did in fact play Eve-Online for almost 4 years. I been to the top of the food chain in an alliance and live in 0.0 for about 2.5 years straight. It was fun, but after a while the dynamics of the game wore off. I guess because the only thing I had to look forward to was just piloting another ship. The role play was awesome however.

    Thanks everyone.

i just had a thought, if you havent tried Oblivion yet take another look it  is a type of singleplayer sandbox,

Excellent diversion, with a multitude of ways to play your char. Literally hundreds of dungeons, wide open spaces,Dozens of quests, Just wish they would come out with more expansion's. And make it multiplayer.

I beat Oblivion a few times already and after I found broken quests which in no way could be completed unless one used cheats, the game pretty much lost it's glamour.

    Thanks for the feedback.
