It's not 100% accurate, but will give you a pretty darn close estimate IMO.
Personally i'm trying FFXI. I looked at L2 as well, but the grind is to horrid with hardly to no purpose other then to do stupid PVP endgame.. the journey is important too folks not just the end.
I love the FF lore so that's just me and I plan to read quests, etc. It's up to you though.
If FF doesn't seam fun or anything i'm just going to go back to ol' EQ2 or VG. I've tried everything.. nothing gives purpose or sense of accomplishment anymore.. everythings so simplified it's like the games are designed for toddlers. I like a game that requires a brain.
[ Played ] 2Moons, Anarchy Online, City of Heroes, City of Villains, Dark Age of Camelot, Everquest, Everquest II, Guild Wars, HellGate: London, Lord of the Rings Online, Rappelz, RF Online, Shadowbane, Star Wars Galaxies, Sword of the New World, Tabula Rasa, Vanguard: Saga of Heroes, World of Warcraft, Last Chaos
loved FFII but the combat did get a little old since im used to the quicker engaging/disengaging that eq would have and LOTRO is an amazing game expecially the crafting but the way the end game gear looked didnt really excite me too much it looked much like the lower level stuff and EQ2 just seems close to dead imo and though pvp was very frustrating the diversity of classes/races was fun and a good game nonetheless =o
If you were going between LoTR, EQ2, and FFXI, I think it would be either FFXI (I believe this has around 300-500k subscribers? I remember seeing that) and LoTR has like 100-200k subscribers. Personally if I had to play one of those, I would play LoTR just because it is the newest and I wouldn't feel behind or anything. However I play neither of them, I play Lineage 2 and if you do join Lineage 2, join in this new expansion so you do not feel left behind since a new race is coming out.
MMORPGChart.com hasnt updated its website for over a year. However, I beluieve there is another subscription tracker website out there. I just cannot recall the site name. HOwever its daat is current up to summer 2007
Well here's my feedback on FFXI if you was interested (it's in your list so I thought I'd give my 2 cents)
Went and bought the collection with all the expansions but the last one.
Installation - Painfully slow and annoying process. Everything is done in its own install. As in you install the game launcher. Then the game. Then each expansion 1by 1. 1 install file to hard for these people?
Registration - Most annoying registration I've EVER experience in my entire life of MMO gaming and you can clearly see how many I've played in my sig. Takes forever and is VEEEEEEEEEERY slow.
Launcher - It took me 30 minutes to figure out how to just play the damn game looking through the launcher. What a pain in the button. Is it to hard to make a simple; Open shortcut, Login, Click Play?
1 Hour - For what you might ask? To CHECK the files. Not update the game. Just to CHECK them. How slow could this possibly be? VG is larger then this game and took 20 minutes tops to check all files.
7 Hours - Yep 7 hours. What's 7 hours? That's how much time I had to wait for it to patch. I'm on high speed broadband internet. You're telling me it's going to take 7 hours to patch some updates to the expansions I have? I've never waited this long before except when I was on dial-up. They either did MAJOR changes or it's forcing me to download the other expansion that I don't have. WTF is that about?
I stopped there. Have no patience to wait 7 hours for a patch. That combined with the painful process of even trying to play has turned me away. I'm going to give VG a try again. Took me 2 minutes to have my account back up and running. 20mintes to check files. and 2 hours to update. They've done HUUUUUUUUGE changes to the game.. yet only takes me 2 hours.
Guess that's what you get when you trust a bunch of overseas folks to create a quality game.
I'd suggest playing VG or EQ2. Both are good games, but VG is so fun now. Dynamic weather is just fantastic on test server... very cool seeing lightning storms in the distance and stuff like that. It performs A LOT better now. I can run maximum settings on 7600sli too with 50fps average. The server merger has made each server fairly populated as well. I hope they keep them merged regardless. I like it this way.. always can get a group.. Plus flying around on a mount is just flat out awesome as can be. No game has given me such joy just by looking at things more then this game. Crafting is really fun and indepth. Deplomacy is ok.. really weird card game.. not exactly for me, but i like doing it from time to time just to hear the NPCs conversation. Plenty to do.
Anyway, GL on your game hunt. I've tried all the new releases and well they all suck. So try not to waste as much money as I did.. i'm going to be smarter about my purchases from now on and invest wisely. Next game I try will probably be AION. I love the idea of flying (flying mount in VG is fun).. so that's a big selling point to me.

yeah i know lineage 2 has the most but i wish those three games werent as dead as they seem to be
I agree. I really enjoyed L2 and the character I played, it just always seemed like nobody was around. As far as the OP goes I would have to say probably a pretty close race between EQ2 and LoTRO.

The Hell you talkin bout? 7 hr update? lol no way. It took me 1 hr to update from RELEASE COPY and about... 30 mins to check files. And the launcher is simple, he click the thing that says Final Fantasy XI, BAM your there. and what was so 'annoying' about registration? the fact that its ALL within the client? the fact that it only take about... 5 mins to register?
the only reason i quit FFX1 is cuz of the 30th party programs you have to go though just to get the log in screen. What happen to running 1 program to log in to a game. I put up with it for almost a month before uninstalling and shattering the discs. Why the heck would you make the game so far away from it self, i mean having that many things running and haveing to go though JUST to log in.

If you count global subscriptions it's Lineage I believe.
Westerward journey online 2.
Of those you listed , probably EQ2. However, Lineage2 is #2 in subscriptions worldwide.
Torrential
Torrential: DAOC (Pendragon)
Awned: World of Warcraft (Lothar)

I think lineage 1 has a greater population than lineage 2, and I think its 2nd behind WoW.
For the western market Runescape is (1 million subscribers)
however for the global market last i checked it was one of the lineages
of those listed i believe it is LoTRO

Runescape believe it or not is the second most popular mmorpg.

Believe it or not most sub counter webistes say Runescape has the second mst subs or all mmorpg
I can't remember where and when I saw it, but "Perfect World" is said to have 30 million players...
Ofcourse, in asia, so that doesnt count compared to WOW's 8 million..err..2-3 million in the west
