AoC on dial up?

Hey everyone, I was wondering if it would be possible to play AoC on dial up. I currently use cable, but I am in the process of building a new house and where I am it doesnt look like I am going to be able to get cable or dsl. I have been waiting for this game for a while and things arent looking good. Any clue if its possible to play on a dial up connection?

If you could, I don't imagine you'll be having a very good time.

Yeah, thats what I was thinking, damn, ill have to figure something out.

  • If you've been on cable for a while, going back to dial-up will drive you crazy!

Im sure you will figure something out.

if your going to go dial up, it would probably take about 80 hours just to download the client!

I think also with the difference between night and day cycle, you will also see some major wait times. It's been said that some quests you just do at night and then more mmo during the day, the physical switch just between these will wreak havoc with normal play. Probably possible but you would only enjoy it maybe 1% of the time of play, and therefore not worth the hassle.

In short, no.  Don't waste your time.  I'd be exploring any possible back up plans you have if you really want to play AoC.

if anything bro try and look for a wireless conection, it would be better then dial up....alot of satalite comapanies have a good net connection too...i would exhaust all posiblites before i even tried to play it on dial up...thats not gonna be fun at all

What makes a man build a house into a place, where dial up is the only option?

    dial-up is still alive ?

I don't think dial-up will be fast enough to play AoC. Alot of games are already putting broadband connection into thier minimum requirements, and i doubt AoC will be any different. Having players on very slow connections will affect the other players and the server very much, and while i can't see how they will know what your connection will be, it probably won't be able to handle the game, and while you probably could try anyways it might not be a nice thing to do.

I appreciate the info guys. Im going to try and work on the cable company in my area. The house that im building is appx 600 feet from the service, but considering im the only house going in that general direction that would wants the service, they wont run the lines down the poles to get it to me. Its frustrating that ive been a customer for 4 years with them. Well, ill have to do something, maybe try satellite. I heard its crap for gaming though. Thanks a bunch guys and maybe (hopefully) ill see ya in game.

If you can afford to offer to pay for the cable installation.

It's $3-8 depending on cable quality PER FOOT. So if you can fork up 5 grand then maybe they'll do it. Otherwise you can see why it's so costly for just 1 person. If you was going to buy a T1 line from them then they'd do it if you signed a contract to have the service for so and so period of time.

Is there anyone that's 650ish ft away that has the service or doesn't have the service that you know personally? or a business?

If so see if you can set up a wireless antenna to connect to by offering them highspeed for free. Buy a good speed like 10down or something and share the connection with them.

This works really well with businesses. Anything they can save money on is always a good thing. Some might be worried about security so you may have to look around.

You're also looking at a 200-400 dollar antenna to power to your house with no packet loss. You'll probably want 2 of them. 1 to send. 1 to receive.

This will cost roughly the same as satellite to set up, but be cheaper on a month by month basis. You'll also get far superior speeds.

You could also wait till January when HughesNet makes Spaceway3 Ka-Band satellite available to the public. This Satellite is the power of 17 satellites into 1. It does not require a NOC thus reducing the 2 hops down to 1. The typical 800ms delay will be cut in half. THEN you'll be able to get 30mb down 18mb up speeds. Reducing your latency significantly as well as not being disconnected on more upload demanding games like AoC, Tabula Rasa, etc. With a good down/up package on the spaceway3 satellite you could even play FPS games (no joke.. got a friend who's "inside" so to speak.. plays CS:S on it perfectly fine)

Satellite will be more expensive month by month basis, but you get free install.. nearly free equipment.. replacement warranty for year and 1/2.. etc. With setting up your own wireless you get no tech support.. no installation.. expensive hardware.. possibly cheaper month by month basis.

So it's really a personal choice as to which you want to do. Personally, I fking hate satellite with a passion, but it's close to January and am going to give it a test drive to see if the new ka-band satellite is worth a damn.

It is said by expert network technicians the new Spaceway3 Ka-Band satellite can even surpass DSL/Cable easily.. that's already been prooven with the speeds you can get, but the latency is my concern.

I don't plan to try AoC, but from the supposed "real time" combat rumors it will not be possible on Dail-up nor satellite until spaceway3. If you attempt it on satellite you'll get a lot of frustrating random disconnects, but other then that satellite plays all other MMOs just fine except for EVE and Tabula Rasa that I know of.
