Now i just started yesterday or so myself and am only lvl 8 but from what i understand this game is not like other mmorpgs. Its not like other mmorpgs in the way that in other mmorpgs you take your char/class with its cool skills and go do some interresting fast combat with pve monsters/npc's and get rewards and lvl up etc. You may like the ground , you vs pve, combat or you might. Probably many may not like it because other mmorpgs do it different and maybe better.
However ground combat seems like something they added to the existing system. The existing system the pvp run economy which means anything is possible and you will have to find a way to make your name known in it. At least thats what i think its about. That plus a storyline revolving around you.
I find it a very interresting idea to actually mean something instead of lvling up with you vs pve mobs and not meaning a thing in the world of the mmorpg.
Though chances are the you vs pve ground combat might be a turnoff for many, maybe for me too, if they put to much emphasis on it.
Anyway just wanted to say that maybe many say this game is no good because they focus to much on 1 thing seen, comparing and expecting, in other mmorpgs and instead not bother to see the whole of what pirates of the burning sea is about.
Probably your focus defines your expectation and maybe you should try look beyond the expectations and as a result see what the game really is about and actually might enjoy it for its depth and possibilities.
Im only new to the game so i could be completely wrong and expecting to much from it. I just notice its got good depth beyond other mmorpg's that simply only focus on you vs pve mobs and kicking their ass.

A good review.
You nalied the most important part, Its different from all PvE grind MMOs out there. Its almost a step back to the sandbox style MMOs we had a few years ago.
The one thing you can't do in this game is compare the avatar combat with other MMO avatar combat. The reason is simple. It was never meant to be in the game at first and its still evolving.
The ship combat though I think is very interesting and exciting. I have a lot of hope that this game will continue to get better after launch. Its already got my interest through the last several months of beta and even when I told myself I would take a break in open beta to rest up for launch I found I couldn't stay away.

That was an interesting preview of the game. I've been accepted to the beta but never tested at all. Now I think I will and see for myself about PotBS.
I was happy to hear that avatars and avatar combat would be included (even if it was late in development). This is the main thing that turns me off to Eve Online.
If this mmo does turn out to be more like the older sandbox style, I will most likely enjoy it. Going to test and will share my opinions once the NDA is lifted.
However their PVE game is heavily invested in the mission system they have created. In fact some of their newer quests are some of the best I've played in a while because they are all wrapped up in a story line and they are often not your typical "go here and kill x number of enemies"
A recent quest (Part of a very big career long quest series) I did invovled taking out enemy ships at anchor with a fire ship, sinking the remaining ships, then entering a cave and taking out enemies in avatar combat. All of this was in the one mission and because of the instance system they have it works very well. I'm not a proponent of instancing and I think this game uses it too much (something the devs have told us they plan to work on in the future) But in some cases it really does allow them to tailor the experience to your quest perfectly without worrying about anyone else interfering with the situation.

That really is the benefit to instancing isn't it. It simply allows the Devs to control the individual encounters and allow all players to play their own 'story' without interferance from others.
It's a great idea for that and for a Single Player game... but that's the thing - this is not supposed to be a single player game - it's supposed to be an MMORPG.
Sure, using instancing for missions like the one you describe makes perfect sense - it would be a real downer if you and fifty other people all showed up at the same time with your Fireships only to find that the enemy fleet was already ablaze... but when ALL encounters are instanced it makes it hard to be in the same 'game space' as anyone you actually want to share experiances with and that is what a lot of people seek in a RPG.
Nothing says irony like spelling ideot wrong.
why anyone would want to group in pve , if im grouping im defenatly pvping.

I think the instancing in POTBS works for them but I support the devs plan to try to make it occur less. Ultimately I hope to see a lot more "adventuring" opportunties in POTBS which to me means random encounters that you aren't necessarily directed to but can stumble upon to make the world seem more alive.

Well for one there are quests that you can't do solo..or not very easily anyway. And there is the concept that grouping in pve could help you work on your cooperative and strategy skills for pvp..or there is just the fact that sailing with my friends in a group is a lot more fun than just doing it by myself all the time.

The game does still need a lot of work (especially land/boarding combat), but so far I'm liking it a lot. It's nice to see the side/race you pick make a big difference to how the game plays instead of them all being the same with a different model.
Finally we have an MMO thats not just a long grindfest, which is what WoW is turning into with it's (more of the same) grinding extension addons.
I like the fact you can form a group with players of almost any level and gain exp and share loot together while still keeping things quite balanced (the economy is almost completely player run). This game focuses on tactics and equipment over just how many numbers you have grinded. Just because you have a bigger ship with more guns and a higher level doesn't mean you will win.
