too late?

I was looking to start another game, but all the new ones well are pretty much "teh suxxor" and I refuse to go back to DAoC.  So I was looking at EVE and I made it as far as the creation screen and started trying to figure out how to spend my points, then I remembered my first DAoC toon a  Troll Zerker with points in Str (good) Dex (pretty pointless) and Charisma (just down right stupid).  So I got to thinking... this game has been out for 4 or so years, I know next to nothing about, including how to spec a new character., and from what I heard it is an extremely deep game.  What do ya'll think,is it to late to start playing EVE, because a newbie will have to completely learn a the game and try to compete against 4 year vets or is learning curve not as bad as I am imaging?  and if you think its not too late, does anyone know a good site that can help me w/ char creation because I really dont want to have to reroll in 2 weeks when I figure out i completely mucked up my toon.

As you create the character the game actually helps you decide where to put the attributes, it will ask you some questions while your chosen your career.

This is my favorite, but the sticky up top has most of them. As for character creation just don't put anything in Charisma and spread everything else out equally. Thats my view, but there are others. Not adding to charisma is the most important part. It has no value. The attributes effect how fast you train skill nothing else.

Unless they have completely redone character creation you don't get to spend any points. They ask what race you want to be and what school / culture and then assign points to you wasting (IMHO) alot in areas most players wouldn't, especially as most EVE players will tell you if you want to do well as a newb you have to specialize. So kiss about half your skill points goodbye.

For me I found character creation fairly limited with few choices. I suppose this is to hold the hand of the newbs and make sure one doesn't mess up too bad. On the other hand it also makes sure you start out as only average at best with points spread through a fairly large spectrum and many spent in areas one would not normally spend points in.

As for weather its to late. No its never too late, but alot does depend on what you want and what your expectations are. No you will never catch up with the 4 year but if that doesn't matter to you theres nothing really keeping you from having fun anyway.

Wow some bad advice there, like people who never played before.

Its not to late, but it is a time based skill progression, so you need to specialize from day 1 don't try to be a jack of all trades, you'll just end up sad.

Start a custom character, play around with it. Take anything that increases Perception and Intel. They are the most important skills. Willpower is next, Memory then chrisma.

There are exceptions to this but generally Perception and intel are king.

During character creation strive to get a skill to 5, the difference between a skill at 4 and at 5 time wise is HUGE.

Eve is an amazing game, super deep, huge learning curve, and totally worth the trouble.

Charisma helps with two things, better relations with agents (missions will pay more money and give more loyalty points) and if you like grouping, fleet combat< charisma is a good attribute to have.

Actually, attributes only effect skill training time, nothing else. Charisma is the a primary attribute to social and  a secondary attribute to nothing. Considering how many skill sets there are you can increase it if you want, but it is going to cost you far more that it will ever repay. Considering how important speed of training is, don't increase it.

It helps out in trade and in rewards.  Charisma is a good thing to have.

Yes it is good to have, but it can be increased through learning skills and implants. If you use your attribute points to increase charisma, your character will always be at a disadvantage to characters that where smart enough not to waste attributes on it. Your average skill training time will be higher, and if you play long enough you will regret it. Especially when you go to train Battleship 5 and it takes 30 days instead of 20.

I stand corrected charisma is primary to trade as well. Still, out of all my skill points I have less that half a million in trade or social. For me, charisma would have been a complete waste of attributes. A industry alt could use it thats about it.

I would think your actual starter character should have no more than 6 points, but Caldari have three characters that start out with only 3 in charisma. A pvp character would want to really consider these.
