Should I try this game?

AnofalyeAnofalye Member, Newbie CommonPosts: 7,433

Hiya guys...

Well...I see the very high rating from the MMORPG staff on this game, and it sure make me pause...

Should I consider this game even if Sci-Fi things is an option only when I find no medieval fantasy stuff?  Folks must know my infamous habits to dislike PvP or raid oriented game, from a very quick glance, it dont look like a player feel such an evil pulling during the game if you are not planning to be good in those topics, am I right?

Anyway, I am in no rush, still disappointed with UXO been cancelled...so strolling around!

A tale in the desert would have been my choice, but it is a all raiding non-stop...so I didnt pick it...

Well being an AO addict my answer couldn't be diff... but seriously, YES you should try it.

It's probably the most complex MMORPG around, but hence the most rewarding IMO

I want to hear more comments from players althought...

My ideas are *set* I will admit, so maybe folks around can suggest in a way or another...I am seriously thinking over it atm...but maybe players of this game after reading and faaking on my posts can say a word or 2 from their perception?

To give you a quick summery of my point of view: I am a total scifi/fantasy fan, have been playing AO for about 18 months, 12 of them in one of the greatest guilds on RK1 (and have had great support from guilds and good friends there and in other orgs image).

Why try AO? Let me try to list a few key points with this game:

    • Complexity (Lots to learn, lots of possible character tuning, many very unique classes and playstyles)
    • Challenge
    • Content (Huge designed world, SL beeing stunningly beautiful at places, lots of stuff to do; raid a dungeon, raid challenging raid mobs (maybe one that requires your entire guild), do a mission for xp and reward, do a quest, explore, roleplay, pvp, socialize, twink, hunt dynacamps, engage in tower pvp, etc.) I've played it a lot for over 18 months, and very seldom have found myself bored or at a lack of things to do.
    • The people (In general a very mature playerbase, and those who are not, you can just /ignore image)

I could go on rambling what makes AO great for hours I guess, but I can say as much: It should be experienced. I did try AC2 with friends for a month or so, and have earnestly tried to like SWG (I am a huuuge StarWars fan) image, but they never managed to catch my interest the way AO did, and continues to do. Many AO players try other games, 95% of them come back image Really looking forward to the next expansion too image

I read that you are a fantasy fan, AO is a scifi mmorpg, but then, you can shoot dragons with huuge plasmaguns :D Many think that the Shadowlands expansion is a fantasy expansion, and it is, fantasy in the Final Fantasy way (combining new, old and alien technology and settings), and I don't have a problem with that (loved the Shadowlands expansion).

Well, a quick summary of the game :) dont hesitate to msg. me if you have any questions.

If you like sci-fi and MMORPGS you probably will like AO, but be warned.

AO has a steep learning curve on setting up your character.

Weapons, Gear, Nanos, and Implants, plus how you distribute your IP points can be the difference in being able to play, being gimped and being uber.

Read any and all info about your chosen character profession before you start because you can really screw up early on and be frustrated. WHich usually means your eqipment is wrong or your IP points are in the wrong place.

Creating and leveling a character in AO is much more complex than say EQ or AOC.

But all in all it is my favorite game and I have played most of them.

Well I played a few Fantasy based games. AC1, DAOC, EQ, SB. And I am not a big fan of PVP either. I ahve actually played AO for quite awhile and have not had to PVP. My new org does have towers to defend. And I am thinking of having them teach me PVP to help defend the towers, but they haven't made it a requirement. Try Sci Fi for awhile. You may find out, you like this type of game.

In short... Yes you should try AO.

As others have said, i recommend reading up abit on professions, races and such, and think it through abit before you make your first character.

go for it. You can try the game, if you have a friend you can get a 30 day playtime inclouded startup account, all active players got 3 accounts like this on the 3 year aniversation. My sugestion is to ry the rimour dimension. If you have friends that play it, play where they play, if not try omni , RK2. talk to high lvl players if you need info, look up the forums and ask about boots that you can use.

Hope to have you in this game soon

    Thanks all for the information!

    I am still hesitating but...

Some RL friends are in CoH and there seem to be a must raid thing into AO, or am I wrong?  image

For the EQ2 and WoW fan boy...away with your raiding games, I will leave the MMORPGs before I raid again, have no doubt(and been a second class grouper because I dont raid is not acceptable either)!

There is raiding at higher levels.  Especially for specifc armor parts.  I have heard CoH is a little simplistic.  Good luck on finding a game you will like.  Post when you find the one, I'll be curious what you pick.
