When the new client caught my eye as I was browsing through Fileplanet, I suddenly conjured up fond memories of the beta way back when. Though I've had my issues with the game considering that I only managed to get to level 10 during the whole time the beta was on, I always found myself coming back for more, because of the great character and level designs and art direction (I'm one of those people who can't help but stop for a whole five minutes admiring something aesthetically pleasing).
I'm thinking about getting back into the game, despite the fact that I've forgotten the password for my account during the beta (if NCsoft hasn't already deleted it). However, from what I hear, the usual leveling grind that plagues most of the Asian MMORPGs I enjoy is made even worse by the fact that I would have to deal with griefers who apparently say "rang rang" before PKing me. Should I even bother trying to pick it up again? If yes, any tips to make the experience of getting to the meat of the game bearable?

I just came back today after months of searching for another MMO to play. I would say come on back as long as you know what to expect.
Honestly in the past several months I got pked once and all I did was send a tell to Sovrath, problem solved. Anyways Pking is no where near what it was in fact I wish there was more just to take my mind off the grind.
I'm not sure how it is at the higher levels but I would imagine a few hunting spots would be off limits to opposing clans in a war.You should come back though its way easier to level now and I been meaning to getting around to level a wolf so thats something you can do as well.Good luck
Waiting on Guild Wars 2
LOL That one sentence actually made me check the date on your post to see if someone had resurrected an old post from 2004. I haven't even thought (or heard) about "rang rang" in nearly 3 years.
A few things to put your mind at ease:
1. They now have a buff that all newbies can receive that will protect you from PK by a red 10+ levels higher than you. This means that you'll at least have a fighting chance if someone tries to PK you. It also drastically reduced the amount of reds that would run around PKing, because now they have to have a lower level character to do it, meaning they don't always "pwn". (Time did that as well, after the first year of release, most immature PKers went off to WoW or other games).
2. While you probably will encounter bots at some point in your leveling, there are no longer the live farmers in abundance that will shout "rang rang" at you. That was mostly back in Prelude - C1 when we'd have farmer wars (which most people who like pvp found to be fun, btw.) Farmers like that haven't been a real problem in years.
3. The newest expansion is going live on Wednesday. A few expansions ago they released newbie buffs that all newbies could receive to speed up the leveling process through the first 20 or so levels. In this newest expansion, they've increased the amount of time you can get newbie buffs up to level 40. That will help you a lot in your leveling.
One tip I have for you is to try to join an academy. This is a special part of a clan for players level 1-40. It gives you the benefit of being in a clan/alliance with other players from the get-go and it benefits the clan by giving them special clan points when you "graduate". At level 19, you can get one of the clan members to help you run a quest which will provide you with good armor that will last you till level 40.
Oh, and another bonus they have added for new players is shadow weapons. Shadow weapons work just like real weapons except, unlike real weapons, they have a timer and will disappear after so much time in use. You will receive several free shadow weapon that will last you nearly all the way from 20-40, allowing you to save your money for the more expensive C, B and A grade.
As far as your old beta account goes, I have no idea if they've erased those old accounts. I'd lean towards saying, no, they haven't though, since they've never mentioned it. I would be interested to find out though, mostly because there are a lot of names locked up if those accounts all still exist (once a name has been used, it can't be used again, hence, the more creative combinations we see...)

Thank you so much for the advice. I'll be sure to get back into the game, though I will probably have to start back at level 1 since I forgot the password to my old account. Just one question...
I've gotten a lot of advice that tells me I should try and get into an academy, any particular ones that are relatively large, well-known, and reliable I should join?
Being part of a clan or alliance (or academy of a clan) is really where the game shines.

on a populated server where the famrer's are every where in the catacomb's or necropolish'es you might end up getting trained bye em but it's the only places i ever really had trouble with em since C2.

you get 15 coupon's at lvl 20 completing your first class transfear, for middel D grade weapon's they each last 90 minute's equipped and loses 1 minute equiping, but they don't last you from 20 to 40 it's really depend's on your class off how effitive they are and most likely it be 20 to 28
you also get coupon's again at lvl 40 for C grade middle weapon's completing your second class transfear where each last 120 minute's
and at 56 you get B coupon's for B grade middle weapon's

then they's some free new ng soulshot's or spirtshout's where the soulshots tend's to run out at lvl 15 for fighter's the spirtshout's can last up to 2x lvl's for nuker's.
newbie ticket's to go back and forth in the starter villagede's.
weapon and armor upgrade for nongrade stuff from 1 to 25.
D grade can be upgraded at blacksmith off mammon up to top C grade but it's really exespensive and not recommend unleass you have second top D or C updraing it to top Grade.
Dimension Dimaond's for the lvl 35,37,39 class change quest's so you can port around villagede
's for free...
it's gotten esaier to lvl up alone but that's probly what you have to do from 1 to 6x +
