I really wish Mythic was making a DAoC 2, instead of a Warhammer MMORPG. I am a big fan of both DAoC and Mythic. I think Mythic is a fantastic company and has good business ethics. I was browing this website today and came across a bunch of screen shots of DAoC on the front page of the old game, which then led me to the screen shots here. I really miss this game and wish the population wasn't so low.
I am too far gone by this point to ever return. I first left after getting a toon to 50 in Catacombs, because the game started going down hill for group play around that time. I've tried returning many times; when the Classic servers came out; after the new class changes; and then recently to try out the Dragon quests. As much as I liked playing the classes everytime I came back, it just wasn't the same. The old community wasn't there anymore, and the new community wasn't crazy about grouping like I was. PvP turned into getting titles and all about the RP's, whereas before it was about defending your realm; RP's were just a bonus. I love grouping for PvE and just setting up camp and grinding for hours, while chatting. Now people just want to rush to lvl 50 for RvR.
I am also 2 expansion behind. I own them, but everyone else has already maxed out their characters and I really don't want to play my lvl 50 Thane.
I noticed in the screen shots of how small Camelot is, compared to major cities in more modern games. Seeing this made me think of how cool it would be to see a DAoC 2 come out. Everything would be bigger, movements and animations more fluid, and overall more fresh hopefully bringing in another 200k people into the game. One can only dream though, because DAoC 2 will never see the light of day and I doubt DAoC will ever make a come back for me to be able to settle into the game again.

I think that you've hit on a problem that has vexed game companies for a while....there appears to be no real way to create a successful sequel for a MMORPG game. Most attempts so far have been less than positive, even Lineage 2/EQ2 has never reached the glory days of their predecessors.
Could there even be a WOW 2? I don't think so.
For DAOC 2 to be successful, you'd have to create some sort of entirely new scenario or lore.... and even then it wouldn't satisfy those who want to see something new and fresh...(which maybe WAR will provide)
The only real way I can see to breath new life back into DAOC would be for Mythic to take one of two routes...one..... offer some sort of station pass like SOE does for people who decided to play WAR...(heck, maybe charge a nominal 4.95 a month fee)..... or two...go the free to play route......with an item shop....both might bring the players back to give it a go.

For the people that want what was once DAoC, myself included will probably not happen. Since quitting camelot, I haven't really played any other mmo the way I played camelot. Like Vinter said, majority of the people who we played with don't really play anything anymore.
I guess that's the price we pay for having the mmo genre explode into popularity.
No required quests! And if I decide I want to be an assassin-cartographer-dancer-pastry chef who lives only to stalk and kill interior decorators, then that's who I want to be, even if it takes me four years to max all the skills and everyone else thinks I'm freaking nuts. -Madimorga-
I think the issue is not so much a DAOC 2, but that people want a game that delivers the same type of gameplay as DAOC did/does.
I know this is going to seem odd, but the number of mmorpg players that visit boards and try new games is only a small percentage of the total number of players. WoW, while not the first, is for many people their first game and as such influences how they see other games. Add on top of that most games more than a year or so old are not even in game stores. Then the belief that "newer is better" and you have the explanation of why DAOC and every game out for more than a few years expereiences severe decline. It does not matter what DAOC did or did not do, the population will have declined.
Without players, or knowing people, most older players will not return. New players will not start. So you end up with a difficult situation. You can try to rebuild the game - which is something no game company has seriously done. Or, you can launch a sequel. Sequels have had a mixed review.
WAR IP will bring in some new players to the market, but I think if someone made a DAOC 2 and stuck another name on it then it would have almost as much interest. The interest is for something new, not necessarily for WAR.
I do think WAR can teach us a lesson. WAR's design is very much in the post-WoW design. As such, you cannot capture the same type of gameplay that DAOC delivered. I think a DAOC 2, while nice in concept, is one that is also likely to go down the WoW path. Not saying anything against WoW, but, if people wanted things with a similar look and gameplay, then they would be happy with WoW and not looking for a new game. Sure, some want WoW, but with some other things. I think those people will be happy with the next set of mmorpgs coming out. But, it is games like AoC that are really trying to do something new, whether or not it will actually work out, that if successul will be the model for the next set of mmorpgs.
I dont care if its DAOC2 or not. What I do want is another RVR game. Something where we can take sides and not flop back and forth. Realm pride.
I am hoping that WAR is it. As for a DAOC2 concept. 1 is enough.

I too want DAOC 2, primarily because of the lore and setting that DAOC created. WAR is too much like WOW in its IP, its pretty lame(yes, I know they invented it first).

WoW own Daoc for PvE but Daoc is by far the best pvp game so far... War comin some say it is Daoc 2 other say its a new game with Daoc game mechanic... but until War come out i say we wait and see. War may sound like WoW but ive always wondered if WoW with a pvp like Daoc type in it would have done... Contested area takable like those keep/tower, Remove those 30 secondes pawn guard from main city and remove that freaking protection pvp-flag for all zone that belong to the major city that is under attack so atleast player can be killed during a suprise attack and not get rdy and start ganking ppl when they sure to kill everyone... Havent seen a king killed at all in 3 yeas on arthas.
Great post! I too remember the good ole days of DAOC. a lot of comradery, everything was new and fresh, people didnt mind helping others, and the pvp and pve were both tons of fun. FUN being the key word. made a lot of good friends and stayed up many nights till the break of dawn. lots of great stories not only through pvp, but growing up(lvls 1-49). i began playing mmorpgs back when asherons call was in its baby stages. that too was a lot of fun! but now things are different. there wont be another game like DAOC or Asherons Call for that matter. both were pioneers and legends in the mmorpg industry. i havent played DAOC in a long while. I tried to come back several times as well, but its just not the same. and i have played many games trying to catch that feeling again with no luck. it just isnt gonna happen. sooo, heres to DAOC and the memories it help create, and finding the next great mmorpg! <cheers to you JK>
I think a DAOC 2 would be better than WAR. DAOC 2 would have more people play because people who quit Daoc will think hell why not take a chance on this FUCK WAR
Perhaps they could remake the same game with the new WAR engine and have a relaunch? Otherwise the Staion pass idea is good as is the idea of giving DAOC for free to subscribers of WAR (as a way of keeping the subscibers even if they get temporarily tired of WAR).
What I truly liked about both DAOC and Anarchy onlie was the level/skill system. I love to experiment with builds and both these games are heaven on earth for that.
You know, Im still happy enough with DAOC1, I just dont feel the need for DAOC2, Id rather they keep improving DAOC. Besides , as I posted before. Making a DAOC2 would have Mythic just competing with itself. Obviously, many of those who play DAOC will try out WAR

I knew my eyesight was bad, but missing a thread at almost the top of the front page.. Man.
I agree with pretty much everything JK-Kanosi says in his original post. I wanna bring back Camelot, Darkness Falls, and Avalon City to and beyond their former glory. Gimme my DAoC 2!!
