"Real" PvP in the forseeable future?

Hey MMORPG

I played LOTRO and i loved it. Great interface and combat system. Great graphics and classes too...

But the only thing holding me back completely is the lack of PvP (Aside from duels)...

You guys/girls think there is any hope of "real" world (open) PvP in LOTRO? (Perhaps is tandem with an expansion releasing a new empire)?

My build: Sapphire Radeon HD 4850, Asus P5GC-MX/1333 Motherboard, 4gb G.SKILL DDR2 667MHz RAM, Core 2 Duo e7200 CPU, 250gb Western Digital SATA Harddrive, Windows Vista Home Basic 64-bit.

    No.

The dev's are too stuck on thinking that PvMP is great, and it's not.

You seen the monster-play, that is the main form of PvP in the game.  It is to be expanded further in the next couple of book updates I believe.  Apart from that there are no plans for any other type of PvP play to my knowledge.

actually the dev's said they were becomming much more focused in the PvMP aspect of the game. They are tracking pvp'ers and paying attention to what people like us want and are in the process of incorporating it more into the over all game.

New area to PvMP in is one thing, as well as more notoriety systems, to make it more public, like for instance right now there is pretty much stars, and rank, though most people who do not PvMP alot, or are really into the rank grind no much about ranks, but stars are easy to see. On my server i know of one person with 4 1/2 stars and am rooting for him to get to 5, the only freep i will have seen. But they are gonna make even more things which will show what a person has done in the PvMP area. What exatly i dont know.

but expect decent changes throughout time in books 12

    13

    and 14 and so on.

After so much time in WoW i know that patience works with this game. I could go around from game to game, but i am content on the slow pace of Lotro, not so time consuming. I mean in WoW PVP is was hardcore almost 24/7 but on my server there is a 3-4 hour window for PVP and thats about it, and thats awesome for me, and many other recovering MMORPG addicts.

i would suggest being patient, and seeing what book 12 offers, or come back when 12 and 13 have come out, and enjoy all the new stuff at once.

    cheers!

Open world PvP versus in a set apart battleground area? More than likely not.

It is more than good enough for a Pve game, if you are a Pvp fanatic go to Warhammer or Age of Connan...

    Playing: World of Warcraft.
Played: Lord of the Rings Online, Starwars Galaxies.
Tried: Starwars the Old Republic, Everquest 2, Guild Wars, Vanguard, Age of Conan, Aion.

Perhaps I'm in a bad mood so I apologize if this sounds like flaming. However, this was discussed so much and the reasons explained that "no" there will be no open pvp for exactly every reason that was given.

You can't have hobbits killing hobbits, Elves ganking people, etc. Otherwise you just bastardize the source material.

In addition, you can't have orcs showing up in Rivendell and picking off people leaving town. If any of this is done you essentially get some generic fantasy game in a Lord of the Rings wrapper.

this is the strength as well as the weakness of basing a game on a book.

I haven't played much PvMP. Maybe an hour or two on the creep side, but I think the concept Turbine is working with has the possibility of retaining my attention. I think the lore aspect as well as the rich story-driven PvE environment they've created prevents open-world PvP. Segregating it into the Ettenmoors battleground is a good comprimise.

That said, Turbine seems to be having quite a few balancing issues with the system so far, and it might take a while to settle down into something fair and predictable.

if you want Open-World, ruthless PvP, then you should have played Planetside.  that is REAL PvP.  not what the so-called "Hardcore Forum PvPers" whine for.

there won't ever be a full-out, 100% REAL Open-World  PvP-all-the-time MMO that is not a FPS.  it just won't happen, because the majority of RPG style players don't want Real PvP in their RPGs(no matter how much "Forum PvPers" claim to be a majority, they are not.), and RPG developers don't want to alienate the core RPG fanbase.  infact the Forum PvPers don't want REAL PvP either actually. if they did, they'd be playing Shooters and/or games with very little if any PVE content.

     just the way it is.

The day Lotro will be focusing on pvp will be the day i quit, games that were developed for pve should never try to be something that it isn't.

You make a good point. I'd like to add that the reason they should never try for PvP as a PvE game is that each system requires different mechanics, and when you have a level and skill system directed towards PvE, translating that to PvP without screwing up the PvE balance is very difficult. I would even venture to say impossible, but I don't know - I'm not a coder/developer whatever.

Turbine is nonetheless trying to do this with Monsterplay, and it's been causing some problems. MP has a lot of tweaks in its future in order to get it to the point of being fair and balanced while not adversely affecting the PvE side.

    As has been said...

LoTRO is focused on PvE content, based around the world of Middle Earth and events going on during the journey of the ring. It is not, nor has it ever been advertised as an open PvP game.

As for "real PvP", again, I realize that when people are saying that, they mean "open, world PvP where you can kill anyone at anytime without fear of penalty or restriction". Truth is, that is a *type* of PvP, it's not the definition of PvP itself.

I know some people feel they make a strong(er) argument by deeming anything less than that to be "not real PvP". Like somehow it's a flaw. I can't help but feel such comments ring of willfull ignorance. Truth is, so long as it involves one human player competing against another human player - whatever the setting or setup - it's PvP.

So, the question that's really being asked is "Will LoTRO ever have open/free-for-all PvP?" The answer is "very highly unlikely".

If you're looking for a PvP game, go check out one of the various ones already on the market, or keep your eyes on those coming up in the future.

real pvp would ruin the game. I mean it would break lore to see lots of trolls roaming bree and surrounding areas all the time wouldnt it?
