Hellgate is a game you can get bored with in a week or two, TR at least has some content and depth.  Whoever came up with the pay to play plan for hellgate has a lot of missing marbles upstairs.

    Neither.

HGLs fun ends after beating normal mode then it's just the same crap all over again. Game ends roughly level 25-30.

TR is just a snore fest once you finally realize you arn't helping any stinkin' war. You can solo the entire game. The so called FPS combat is actually clever designed turn based combat with lock on targeting and everything. The game dies off around level30ish.

IMO a good game to play now is PW, VG, or wait for Aion. Everything else is just a snore fest.

I'm trying to get PW downloaded while I play a month of VG and some Rappelz on the side. I login to TR occasionally until my free month is up and I uninstall it.

VG is alright, but my GFs computer won't run it so i'm not going to play it. We planned to play together, but I can't afford to upgrade her GFXCard ATM. We'll give it another try when I've got the cash.

So i've spent rougly $210 bucks of 2007 on MMOs only to them all being basically a waste. I've spent around $400 all together on games in 2007. I'm done. I'm going to F2P games until Aion or Spellborn releases. Even then I'm not buying them till 1-2 months after release and that's also after I play a trial. This shit is getting expensive for poor quality games.

Even non-MMOs are sucking.. TwoWorlds, BioShock, etc.. so many games just can't hold my attention.

I miss EQ1. Wish they'd scrap EQ2 and redo EQ1 with EQ2s engine.. but ease up on the grind to make it more casual friendly and tada.. awesome game. I can hope can't it? LOL

I honestly dont believe that either is a solid game for long term investment. TR has a lot of issues but I suppose could be overcome with time. I would say TR ...but thats because you only gave me those two choices. I think there are a lot better games in the field which I would chose over both

Its kind of hard to believe you have any relevant opinion at all due to the fact that you get bored over everything.

So Im just curious, besides EQ what other game have you really enjoyed playing and would you consider yourself a pvp'er or a raider.

What game is "PW"? (I figured it out..perfect world.)

    That game looks pretty intense.

And free to play? Whats the catch?

I didn't get bored as fas as I did with TR on Hellgate. Neither lasted a month and I reached endgame for both casual play within 2-3 weeks.

My list of played games doesn't say how long i played them. EQ 3 yrs, EQ2 2yrs, WoW 1.5yrs, etc...

PW is PerfectWorld. It's a free game that's fun. Several of the F2P games are decently fun. People claim they're an awful grind, but it just isn't true. All MMOs have a grind. The F2P just don't cookie coat it.

Instead of a paragraph explaining why you need to kill 10 bunnies.. most F2P simply tell you to just go kill 10 bunnies because the NPC asked you too. Most F2P arn't that good with RPing, but their the same quality or better then what's being released lately except they are FREE. Why waste the money is all i'm saying.

I'm currently enjoying Rappelz and PW beta now though.

I also am playing VG and it's pretty fun, but not going to continue because my GF can't play it on her PC. Other then that it's a great game.. just playing solo is god awful boring in any game.

PW is in beta so it's got more changes on the way. There is no catch. It's just an item mall setup instead of monthly fee. I personally have never used an item mall in any F2P but I know friends who have. What you can buy isn't a necessity, but obviously gives you some advantages or perks.

Rappelz is pretty fun, because the pet system is VERY deep. It's level AND skill based system too, which is pretty cool. The graphics are nice if you pump up AA and things like that using something like nvidia panel to change what settings the game loads with. Community is pretty nice too. Raids are fun as well.. your guild can even compete to control dungeons. PvP is "OK" but it's fun.. I never did it too often. You can quest basically the entire game, but to get the pet you want takes a grind.. they increased the drop rates of EVERYTHING for like the 5h time now so it's getting even better.

IMO i'd play a F2P and just hang in there untill something worthwhile releases. I'm personally waiting for Spellborn and Aion..

I haven't played Tabula Rasa yet (but will end up getting the game later this month since a friend of mine is going to play it).

With that said I can tell you a little bit about Hellgate London as a casual player.  As a game, I think it's pretty fun.  After the storyline it's all about the loot.  Modifying better weapons and armor and running through online  play to get better drops.

One problem (which might be similar to Tabula Rasa) is that the setting of the game is constantly dark.  Of course it makes sense, since the game's setting is post apocalyptic, but you'll notice there is very little variety in the visuals.  You'll end up running through the areas that look identical to previous areas over and over.  As much as I enjoy the game, I end up taking breaks just to rest my eyes.

If you liked Diablo 2, then you'll most likely enjoy this game.  Add some guns and a 3D perspective and this is what you get.  There are still some glitches but they are working them out, and another major update is coming soon.

I think both of the games have a really similar combat system to them. I only played TR for a few days when it was in beta, and I own HG:L, but one of the first things that came to mind when playing Hellgate was how similar it was to TR. I actually would put Hellgate as a cross between Diablo and Tabula Rasa.

The main difference is one is a coop FPS (Hellgate) and one is more of a traditional MMORPG.  I like both very much actually.

  • EnigmaEnigma Member UncommonPosts: 11,384

    In all seriousness:

    Neither

Hellgate London: Really bad.  Its like Guild Wars in terms of the set up but its really really bad. You'll like it for seven days and then that's that.

Tabula Rasa: High potential for a great sci fi MMO, but Ive played it. I was severely let down. It's just plain bad.

I can vouch for Hellgate with the 0.7 patch coming out next week. All of the bugs that made the game a "premie" are hopefully going to be fixed. From the HellGate site : "We have a nice list of fixes in this patch, including improvements to memory usage, UI changes, and general skill updates. "

"Also included will be a number of really cool subscriber items and quests that should please many old D2 fans. We’ll detail this content, as well as the bug fixes, when the patch goes live" There is also a new class being added, but it wasn't announced in this update (This one is from November).

Hellgate was released to early, so it is lacking in content. Although I believe that they will add alot. The game is also available without a monthly fee, but with reduced content.

    Content? Again. Neither.

Both are lacking. Neither is more or less then one another. They're about equal.

TR servers suck butt and you get higher pings then other MMOs as well as DCs sometimes, which will totally piss you off during an instance (fails all missions you got inside the instance).

Overall stop hoping. Either move on or ignore our advice and just waste your money trying it. It's up to you.

Personally i'm going back to EQ2, because it runs on my GFs system so we can play together. Was going to go to VG, but the system requirements are so god awful heavy for same/less quality graphics as EQ2.. I blame Sigil for using such a poor engine to build the game on.. come on.. Unreal engine? LAFF! Good game, but can't play it with GF sooo i'm out. She hated TR.. got bored of Hellgate in 1 week.. I lasted about 4ish. TR she tried my account.. lasted 2 days.. me.. about 3ish weeks. Such a waste of money.. 150bucks worth of games down the drain =(

Kriegsbeil, to be honest, they both are really bad games.

Its like saying...what would you rather eat? Elephant crap or an uncooked Lioness Uterus.  I mean if you have to choose between the two it'll be pretty hard.

Like I mentioned earlier, HellGate: London will be fun for two weeks max. Also, I guarantee that when you buy Tabula Rasa at the end of this month, your friend will be loosing interest. There's just really nothing there. No real plot, no real personal involvement in the world...just collecting rune pieces really.

You are choosing between two really poor games.  If I were you, I would save your money for something fun to play

Hellgate London has a demo out. I  suggest you try it if you really must know how it plays.

But I really wouldn't recommend it.  I tried it myself and it felt boring.  I was wandering around as a gunner and it didn't feel like much of an action game at all.  Enemies didn't even notice me until I started shooting them, I never had to worry about ammo, much less reloading.  The gun has a range of about 6-10m.  The special abilities are a bore.  A special ability that gives you a damage boost if you stay still, for monsters that never come at you?  Bah.  A grenade that bounces all over the place and has an explosive radius of 1m, and thus never hits?  Bah.

There might have been more to the game, but when I got to the starting area they're like, "Go bring me 10 flux capacitators.  You'll find them by killing stuff over here."  At which point I was like... WTF?  Why does this have to put me through the same crap as some boring MMO?  I mean, at least Diablo 2 had the cave of EEEEEVIL, some witch raising the dead, and some other stuff.  Never does Diablo 2 ask you to kill a set number of monsters or collect a set number of items.

The graphics.  Utter, absolute crap.  Maybe it would look better if I had a better rig, but my computer plays Halflife 2 and it looks great (or at least comparable to the screen shots).  Sure, it came out 2 years ago, but this game looks like it was due out in 2000.  For all of its nice graphics and such, it doesn't scale well at all.  And the level design is boring.  Since I never have to take cover or worry about funneling monsters through a chokepoint (ala Diablo 1), it just feels like one long tunnel no matter how it's shaped.

Sure, you might just say it was a demo, but the demo is supposed to lure players.  This turned me off.  Hard.

I played the demo for Hellgate but I smelled that rat from a mile away.  I mean it's Diablo/Titan Quest/Sacred/etc...  all over again, just with a new coat of paint.  I can't abuse myself over and over just to try  new skills and get loot.  Been there, done that, have the t-shirt.

Currently I'm playing TR and love it but you could say the same thing about it if you're burnt on MMO's.

So TR would be my choice between the two.

How about the both of them seen a gap in the market and jumped for it ....and missed,The FPS mmo market needs a game LIKE this but sadly niether delivered.

If someone had came up to me in 1980 when I was on my Atari 2600 and said we will be playing games with thousands of people at the same time.I guess my response would have been,"but I only have 2 joysticks"

I would definitely say TR over HGL.  I've played both and TR does have more content of the two.  Not to mention you have a dev team thats working on more content for TR.  Overall it's more of an investment to go with TR.  You buy it now, play it for a month, then you might keep playing or you can put it down and play again when theres an update.

HGL is one of those games where you start playing now and then you get bored, and no updates come that really bring you anything new. Just fixes for the crap thats broken.

To the guy who says he's played all the new games coming out and he's "not impressed" so he's going to play F2P games, what kinda joke is that. Plus you're waiting for TCOS?  I'm not going to say what I know about TCOS but if you think that games going to hold your attention when all the others won't then you're sadly mistaken.

Then again F2P games are pretty bad, and if y ou can play those.. who knows.
