I know AoC is no UO, but the mention of open PvP areas and open PvP servers has me more excited than ever for this game. However, the other day I was thinking about this and realized that there was something I didn't know about this type of "Open PvP". Have they told us whether or not Cimmerians can openly attack Cimmerians or if it is more like WoW where races (or in that case factions) can only attack other races/factions?
Personally I would be disappointed to find out it is the latter. I am encouraged that the devs had the balls to make all race choices human instead of throwing in some sort of fantasy creature(I know this also clashes with the lore). I am hoping they realize that the benefit Open PvP brings to a game like AoC is the inability of a player to feel safe anywhere but in official cities. Outside of these, no matter how close to your starting city you are, you should feel open to attack. This also encourages the races to mingle much more in the different cities and makes openly attacking someone more of a moral choice than in games like WoW where it is expected when you encounter someone of a different faction in the open.
Basically making Race PvP a Free-For-All opens up many essential gameplay and social mechanics that restricting PvP to Race-vs-Race would not.
Also did anyone else notice that the most recent Teaser for AoC, the Bar Tale one, stated the rating as "Not Yet Rated". For a game that was supposed to be using the M Rating as a key selling point, and was practically built around it, they appear to be less confident the nearer to release they get.

Free for all for the most part at least. I believe the only exception is being unable to attack members of your own team or guild. There are absolutely no arbitrary battle lines between factions.

It would depend on the type of game really. I would prefer Free For All, but if its a game like wow where the seperate races oppose each other int he story, then yea, Race Vs Race.
Why on earth would you assume that?
The ESRB in the U.S. has not rated the game, so to suggest that it will be M rated is still just a guess. Funcom can design a game based on exisiting ratings and assume that it will be M rated, but how would you expect them to advertise that? "Not yet rated, but we expect an "M"."
I'm also going to base that on the theory that Eidos, who's publishing will want as wide spread distribution as possible, so no AO rating is going to be pretty important.
These FFA PVP servers are sounding better and better, just wondering how well they'll work out.
It seems to me that AOC is still a game where you do PVE to level up your character, which then makes the only real challenge is to find a place to level in peace w/o being ganked. (sort of like the Mordred server in DAOC)
Oh well, I prefer this sort of environment so I'll definitely be playing on one of these servers......was just sort of hoping we got something (besides blood money) for killing other players.

im sure i read somewhere this was to be a game that is " made by adults for adults" ?
You are quite correct, but just because its a game "by adults for adults", doesn't mean that its a game about or featuring gratuitous, explicit sex, which is essentially what the AO rating is for.

well doesnt it also say 18+ on the beta sign up ad on this very site?
also noone said nothing about porno scenes its the blood gushing from the heads of freshly slain enemies as it flies through the air and spatters the camera.
Ironic isn't it? Where something as natural and a part of life as sex and nudity is considered more taboo than senseless gory violence.

Just let me know how watching a teaster and seeing the "Not Yet Rated" tag at the end, in any way indicates that Funcom isnt confident about what it will be rated. It's the same thing as seeing a movie trailer well before release, and they are usually tagged "This Film Not Yet Rated". It doesnt have a single thing to do with the expectation of what the film will be rated, it's just a simple disclaimer that the ESRB has not yet rated it, that's all. No more, no less. I just think its slightly foolish to read into that tag too much and assume that it would mean Funcom is not confident on what rating they'll get. If you can read that, you are probably working with a crystal ball, and dismissing the obvious answers. Either or, whatever makes you happy, take your pick.

You win... sir!The thing is, what you said has been said before and it doesn't seem to have any impact. I'd personally much rather see sex and nudity then gore and violence but that's just me
