Warhammer Online's Army of Beta Players Now Half a Million Strong... and Growing

Electronic Arts Inc. today announced that Warhammer Online: Age of Reckoning (WAR), the highly anticipated massively-multiplayer online role-playing game (MMORPG) from EA Mythic, has surpassed 500,000 closed beta registrants in North America and Europe. Beta testing resumes next week with a special sneak peek at the new Dark Elf lands and careers. Thanks to the tremendous response from fans around the world, the development team has a strong pool of gamers to engage in WAR’s final tuning stages.

"It’s fantastic that over half a million players want to help us with the development of WAR,” said Mark Jacobs, VP and General Manager of EA Mythic. “Their feedback will help us take WAR to the next level as we focus on refining gameplay, adding polish, and most importantly, making sure the game is extremely fun. We can’t wait to let them all into the living, breathing Warhammer universe that we’re creating.”

Poised to be one of the biggest new MMORPG releases of next year, WAR is slated for official launch in Q2 of calendar year 2008. The Beta Center is still open and accepting recruits at: https://betacenter.eamythic.com/signup.php.

Based on Games Workshop’s epic and longstanding tabletop fantasy war game, Warhammer Online features revolutionary Realm vs. Realm (RvR) game play that immerses players in a world of perpetual conflict. For more information, please visit http://www.warhammeronline.com.

War is everywhere in Warhammer Online: Age of Reckoning (WAR), the new fantasy MMORPG from the creators of Dark Age of Camelot. Based on Games Workshop’s wildly successful Warhammer tabletop fantasy war game, this world provides a rich setting for hundreds of thousands of players to experience the epic nature of war and the glory of battle.

Players are thrust into a grim world of perpetual conflict to fight for the Realms of Order (Dwarfs, High Elves, and Empire) or Destruction (Greenskins, Dark Elves, and Chaos). Next generation Realm vs. Realm game play ensures that players are never fighting alone. With an army of allies at their back, players will defend their homeland, invade enemy Realms, and ultimately lead the siege of their enemy’s Capital City. Every aspect of the game – every player, every quest, every encounter, and every battle – can turn the tide of the ongoing war and mean victory for a player’s Realm!

For the first time ever, players can engage in Public Quests – multi-stage, communal quests to be completed by allied players fighting together against overwhelming odds. They can also embark on an epic quest to complete the Tome of Knowledge and unlock Warhammer lore, detailed monster information, new abilities, rewards, and major story plotlines. Drawing from a quarter century of highly detailed source material, Warhammer Online: Age of Reckoning will bring Games Workshop’s fantasy world to life in a way that will allow players to create characters destined for great deeds on the field of battle.

Good to finally see some soild info about it.  Thanks for the link

Hey, I just realized something, this might mean that they'll announce the final class in the game before the beta reopens.    Unless they re-start the beta without all the DE classes accessible.

We should. They announced in one of the newsletters or one of the letters to the public we would know all of the careers before beta restarted.

When I was looking at the official site the other day and saw that beta applications were over half a million I just fully realized that Warhammer: Age of Reckoning truly has a large following -- both from WAR fans and Mythic DAoC fans.

Both groups want this game to be a great game and I hope and believe that the beta testers are having a strong, positive impact on the game's development.  Like, convincing the devs to include more Open Field RvR, forts, keeps and battlefield objectives.

I couldn't help but note that one of the major criticisms of Pirates of the Burning Seas was that there was too much instancing.  The devs have tried to dismiss this as, "Oh, well, we have to do it that way."  Unfortunately that explanation will not sell subscriptions.

Anyway, this will be the final push and the various dev teams will be buttoning up their product to prepare it for ... release.

No, that's not right ... not for "release."

    For ...WAAAGH!

     "The WAAAGH is coming!"

I can only hope that it does reopen, and that I have an accepted beta app in my mailbox

As much as I would enjoy the chance to be in Beta and feel like I was contributing to making a great game the best it can be, I'm almost happy that the entire experiance will be brand new on release day.  As part of the Beta you get to see the rough draft, and as exciting as that would be it's going to make you see the game through "Vet" eyes.  Remember the first time you saw a fully blown RvR battle in DAoC?  Or the first time you went toe to toe with the Trolls of Zul Furrak?  It's the memorable experiances that you take from a game that give you a sense of aww, and I for one will be looking forward to that in WAR.

P.S.  This is how I justify not being one of the lucky Beta testers

Man I couldn't possibly list every awesome experience I had in Dark Age of Camelot. I think it would have to be in book format .

Beta testers who say they do it just to test the content and contribute to improving the game are fibbers. Even those guys let out a little girly scream inside when they see the beta invite email in their box.

Maybe one day we can let out one of those little girly screams Nate... one day.

Not for sure... will Dark Elves get an archer/ranger type you think?  They have a tank, melee dps, sorcerer, and that last is blank.... any ideas?

Sorcerer is the ranged DPS career.

It would be a very difficult stretch to make an Archer or Ranger the Support/Healing Career.

500,000 beta applications is not the same thing as 500,000 beta testers.

You know, I see on your XFire that you have beta'd WAR. Any idea of what the specs are? What's your computer's specs?

I think it shows my comp specs on my xfire profile page. Those are a tad outdated though, I guess I should update them.

This frikkin sucks! I applied for beta back in the summer and still haven't been accepted. What's the trick? You gotta be a guild mate or something?

    image

  • whitedelightwhitedelight Member Posts: 1,544

There is no trick, but you guys make it sound like you just want to play, not test. Look back at the responses the beta threads have generated lol.

  • ImpyrielImpyriel Member UncommonPosts: 711

I want to test, I have been in so many betas (this is not a flaunt post) that it would make a mightly long list. The reason though I believe and feel is that I have always been contributory to the games development and when possible I will always display this in beta applications. Perhaps I have just been lucky being chosen for so many betas but I'd like to think it was from experience sometimes.

But I have to be honest I really want to play too!

You know I wasn't referring to you and believe you would be a great tester lol. It was some other posts that made me think that.

Let's do the math.  500K people apply for beta..... they might let in about 2-3K right now at best.  You have a better chance of being hit  by lightning.

    Next week sometime.

No one knows (except those involved with development)

If you are really dying then maybe you should contact your local hospice services organization.
