Well I bought the collection for 15 bucks and went to play (finally after a painful registration process) and what happens? 1 hour wasted just CHECKING the damn files. Then 7 HOURS! to download the updates.. even after the collection (didn't buy the new expansion).. i'm on high speed.. i've never seen this before.. what the hell? Either this game needed a SERIOUS update.. or their servers are slow as hell.
Anyway, canceled my ID.. going to uninstall.. i've got no patience for this crap.. at least it was only 15 bucks.

7 hours is a long time but not unreasonable considering it is a quite old game and you yourself said that you did not buy the latest expansion (which would probably have a more updated game).
Anyway even if I don't play this game myself I hear it is very groupcentric and slow to advance in, so if you are that impatient that you can't even wait for the download then this game is probably not for you anyway (no criticism, only an observation).
Going to give vanguard another chance. I like the Brotherhood idea (allows your partner to get 50% exp even if they arn't logged on) so we can stay close in levels. I usually play 2 or more hours then her so finding a game for us is well VERY hard to do.
Anyway, good luck to all who like FFXI. Looked interesting, but I'm not sitting around for 7 hours. I've got limited bandwidth so I can't download all but 3 hours a day. As you can see that'd be an annoyingly long wait.

If your looking for a casual game for you and your girlfriend, i would suggest guild wars. Its really easy to pick up, its popular, and you never feel like you have to rush to get better gear or a higher level. Also its free which is great and it has a large community.
Eve online is also a very casual friendly game. The tutorial was extremely helpful and really helped with the game's learning curve. You can also play many different roles not just your standard "vagabond fighter" like in most games.
World of Warcraft is also very user friendly and probably the most polished mmorpg. However, the game has been out for close to 4 years and people tend to not like to help out new players so much.
We played WOW and ended up quitting.. just wasn't enough depth for us and both of us being artists didn't like the detail of the artwork. Constantly nagged at us everytime we played.
Guildwars we've played to death.
So it was basically EQ2 or Vanguard. We was somewhat tired of EQ2 so decided to give Vanguard another chance. I hear good things.. so we'll see.

normally the stated time is never correct it may say 7 hours but could take less i install this game 3 times on 3 different computers the last week and it hasn't taken 7 hours more like 4 hours , maybe you just got inpatient?
Been there also bought all the expations + full game took me hours to fix everything up and when I got into the game I was like "WTF" and and tried to adjust some settings and controls but it didnt work out so good so I decided to uninstall the crap and left it in my bookshelf where its been now for a long time.
I'm now playing VG again and having a blast, but wish you best of luck in FFXI. I'd rather play the normal console games anyway to be honest. FF7 is like my first love LOL.

I completely understand what you're saying, 7 hours is just too much. But to tell you the truth the game is truely worth it. I've been playing since May '04 and have yet to find a game with a more indepth story and character development. I have it on 2 systems, so trust me I understand about the wait.
If you already bought it, why not just update it during the night while you sleep? I know its not the thing you are really looking forward to doing, but the game is somewhere in the 20 gig size range now.
Sorry if I'm ranting away, but this game is truely special if you are into a community oriented MMO.
(FF7 is my favorite game of all time )
My main problem is I can't find any info about sharing exp with a buddy like VGs Brotherhood system. It basically gives 50% exp to my GF regardless if she's on or not. I play 2 or more hours then her and end up out leveling her in every game. Big problem, because she has more fun playing with me and well that's hard to do if i'm constantly passing her up.
If VG doesn't go over so well i'll give FFXI a better attempt that it deserves.
I'd probably play both, but just can't afford it ATM with Christmas shopping and all, but for now i'm happy with VG.
Thank you all. The game does look very fun and in depth, but it's so hard to get away from my flying mount in VG lol.

Well, you had to download every expansion's update since you installed each of those. Besides that, the game has been around for a long time and has received many updates; it is a very large game. In all honesty, if you didn't have the patience for that update, it's unlikely that you'll be able to handle the in-game time sinks and all of the preparation required (Organizing groups and whatnot).
In reply to Patrick, movement and other key bindings are actually very easy to change. The reasoning for the initial settings is that the game was made for a console, and thus a controller, which is what the majority of people playing FFXI are using.
I really have difficulty understanding people's impatience and obsession with convenience. Good things rarely come fast or easy.
very true , patience is a virtue and VG is a okay game I hear it kinda lacks pvp and the pvp they have is one sided due to some exploit other than that VG seems great but buggy and a pay for beta I think still maybe once it relaunchs I will stop putting it in a deep dark corner and wondering why people referred to it as EQ spawn.
Yes it sure was very very fun being a "Beta tester/bug finder" in the final version and on top of that PAY FOR IT
VG is it's own game, it is far different from FFXI. I'm going to go out on a limb and say if you are a VG fan then it's very possible you will not like FF. VG is more of a get this done now, fast pace, solo friendly game. FFXI is very slow paced (70% of it at least) and very hard on solo players. The game is very polished and has little to no bugs. I've played VG, I enjoyed the short duration of my account and hard one very discerning point in my VG career with the game system, and a bug that really just turned me off completely. I asked for GM's to help and would wait hours for a response, which was always useless and never amounted to me getting my lost time back from countless quests and hours.
FFXI is unlike VG, thats not a good or bad thing. It's the players who choose, if VG is what turns your key than enjoy it. It has potential to be an amazing game and the patch's and updates from what I've heard are doing a fantastic job in molding the soft clay it used to be.
Remember, don't listen to others when it comes to your happiness. If person A is saying "@#$% this game, it sucks don't play it!" then it may not be for that person but it could be for you.
thats normal for updates on MMOs with patches, and such
If you have such a high impatience for the updates, then maybe MMOs arent for you or you could have done it the fastest way and just do it while you sleep.
People who have to create conspiracy and hate threads to further a cause lacks in intellectual comprehension of diversity.
I think Both Vanguard and EQ2 takes more than 7 hours to update.
So........

KSEA players often seek out PVP in a game, but they are looking to socialize with and form alliances with other players who are interested in doing the same. They often seek out guilds or clans that organize formal PVP events, or work on group strategies and tactics.
i swear i started this game 4 years ago and i haven't even touch 40% of the game. (of course, i have 2 chr ...where i have to double level + double do everything)
But however 7 hour wait is nothing considering you are downloading over 1-2 gig worth of craps. Unless you run on something beyond broadband... I have installed this over 10 times ..i just left my game overnight to download.
