WoW Bashing

NinjaGazNinjaGaz Member UncommonPosts: 53

I'm curious about something. Almost everybody posts something negative about WoW that I read. In other MMOs people get angry at the mere mention of the word!

I played it when it was first released and thought it was a great game. I played it for 6 months until they removed "open space" PvP when the BGs appeared (as well as the game being too gear dependent).

I later returned for a few months when the burning crusade arrived and got another char or two levelled, then got bored again :)

So the game got played about 9 months of my life. I dont hate it, I just don't want to play it any more.

However, I still find the bashing of the game curious. In all the MMOs I've played this one was by far the most polished. I find other forums (despite 'hating' WoW) always offering improvements to their current game by starting with 'In Wow there was....'

I think this is evidence enough of a game with so many features and polished. The claimed 8 million subscribers is also evidence.

So my question to you is two-fold. Firstly, I would like a brief overview (1-3 paragraphs max) as to whether you disliked/liked the game and then the game time you played it compared with other MMOs.

I gave my paragraph, my game times are approximately:

WoW - 9 months

LOTRO - 6 months (Still playing but this is probably my last month)

UO - 3-4 months

Thanks :)

well there are two big reasons.

World of Warcraft is mainstream, it's popular. a lot of people hate things that are mainstream and hating it makes them feel like they are not part of the mainstream.

and second, because people love to be negative. Just look on the thread in the WoW section of this forum, one is saying: "Thing you love about WoW" and the other "things you dislike about WoW". the dislike thread is more than twice as large.

I think WoW is a well designed game that I am still currently playing but going tired of quickly.  I think that it opened a lot of doors and ideas for other games and all and all was worth the time that I put into it.

Time played:  Started 02-01-07 to Current...

"Firstly, I would like a brief overview (1-3 paragraphs max)" Lol that was funny :)

I think people use WoW to vent their fustrations since there are no good new mmorpgs to play. If they had a MMORPG to play, they wouldnt spend so much time here talking about wow.

I played WoW for 3 months till I got tired of it. It was a very cool game: fun to level, good quests, lots of friendships, etc; but had no good end-content to keep me hooked up. Its a shame that a good meaningful PvP and strategic MMORPG, that runs well like WoW doesn't exist.

I love to watch the fanboys get defensive. Sometimes, they use the most hilarious backward logic I've ever seen when they defend the game.  I like WoW. I'm playing it right now (I'm reading the forums while I level my tailoring). But every now and then, and really only on these forums, I like to talk smack about it. The responses can keep me laughing all day.

Well from my experience of WoW i can say i really dislike it for a few reasons. At first i played for about 3-4 months at release, came back later on for a month or 2, and still thought it sucked. Then i came back for BC for another month or 2 and still thought it sucked.

I think the game sucks pretty much just because it doesn't have alot of the features i look for in a mmo. My first thing to look at in any mmo is open pvp, 100% open meaning you can kill anyone and in wow u cant kill ure own alliance obviously. Theres no housing which really sucks... Its also really gear based and alot of the classes are unbalanced to a certain extent.

I guess i think to highly of a mmo because the only one i really enjoyed was UO. I also enjoyed L2 to a certain extent. I played UO (t2a-renaissance) for like 4 years and play on a private shard from time to time and I still think its the best mmo out because it has pretty much what i look for in a mmo... i guess it kind of set my standards.

not to mention WoW get extremely boring IMO

and of course the third big reason.  Despite the fact WOW does so much right, it is severely lacking in several key gameplay areas (for some of us) and therefore we dislike the game for it. (hate is too strong a word)

For a lot of people it killed the hope of ever having a non level based game without “Fed-ex delivery” and “kill 10 of this type” missions which is considered content. Some people want more, by showing WoW to much love it makes developers think this is all players want when some want much more.

It's a good game for some, not for me. We aren't all MMO player clones.

i wasnt going to elaborate but here i go...

    Almost everyone likes pizza...

Almost everyone has a favorite topping other than plain cheese.

Almost all pizza eaters will eat cheese.

    Wow is a cheese pizza

Actually I was pretty much in the same boat as you. I thought the game was great, but when battlegrounds was introduced I lost interest. I played on a pvp server, and battlegrounds pretty much sucked the random pvp encounters out of the game. Now everyone was going to instances to grind pvp experience where it felt more like a Battlefield series game rather than an MMORPG.

But besides that I thought the game was awesome, l played from the launch of the game till about 3 months after BG's was introduced.  I might go back, but I still have 7 months of College left, and I want to finish up before I start another MMORPG.

I will say this, I havent played a MMO since old UO that I liked as well as WOW.... Im thinking of giving Lotro a try some day.

On a side note I noticed you only played UO for 3-4 months :P I played that from 97-2000 hehe

Agree completely. I wouldn't say I absolutely loathe WoW because I would be lieing to myself. I playd a good chunk of time, levelled a toon up to 61 and just got bored.

What I despise though is the effects of this phenomenon which is exactly what Tillamook is saying. I also despise the fact that many MMO game companies don't seem to have a creative bone in their body because they'd rather go for the "easy" money and copy WoW to get subscribers. What's laughable about this is. I have yet to see a game that is a copy of WoW actually try and come close. We haven't, so I'd think, as a game developer, that since copying WoW isn't going to give me the higher numbers I want, then I'd have to try something else, something UNIQUE. But alas, a lot of the CEO's of game companies can be completely brainless as to what their players want. Just look at SOE for an example.

  • I play WoW because of its popularity. When people ask you what games you like to play, if you say WoW they know what you are talking about. If you say something like shadowbane, flyff, or lineage 2 nobody knows what those are (normal people not people who play mmos, or even know what it means). I would switch games if something that really caught my interest came along. I really like the sound of Darkfall, and I would try warhammer. I mostly stick to the mainstream games, I just feel they are run the best and have the biggest community, not necessarily the best, but the biggest.

    You could also say scoreboard.

9 million people bought it and millions play. Who cares what a vocal minority thinks?

Not much at the moment. The only game that held my interest the longest was Star Wars Galaxies back in 2005, then SOE ruined it and that was it for me. I did play EQ2 for 4 months, but that may have been the longest game I've played since SWG.  I got into a big guild, leveled up,  played alot of quests in that amount of time and it got old fast.

I've played almost every P2P game out there long enough to know I get bored of them quickly. I've beta tested almost every new game that has come out in the last 3 years, as well as some not yet out, I've played plenty of F2P games and still nothing seems to do it for me like SWG did. If you wanna see what I've played you can check out my guild cafe profile :P

    I dislike it for two main reasons;

1: It's kind of like the McDonald's strategy applied to online gaming. They serve cheap crappy food, but anyone can afford it and you probably don't even need to wear a shirt to get into the restaurant. Maybe the service and the quality of the meal sucks, but it's familiar and you know you'll get the same crappy service all across the board. Billions get served.

2: So how do these games become more accessible to the drooling masses? Easy! Just implement grinding, level treadmills, restrict any and all competition whatsoever. These systems are intentionally in place to prevent anyone from over-achieving or failing. I recently saw a WoW ad that said "Come join 8 million heroes!" Suddenly every single player is automatically a hero?

WoW is a game pased on Rolling, Rates, Feedback and Gear - I fail to see why that game is any good. It migh be decent, but it's not good.

Alright alright alright, shake it shake it.

Many people have already put it perfectly before me, but...

Basically, World of Warcraft is more or less the vanilla ice cream of the MMORPG world. It introduces nothing new - but it does bring all of the older features of MMORPGs into a fresh light. It does everything it does very well.

But the community sucks, and the game isn't anything new - furthermore, it solidified the mold of the current generation of MMORPGs. Although most games called "WoW Clones" are not, in fact, WoW Clones, they did follow in it's footsteps and use a very basic template done well enough without any new innovations to get by.

Nothing is going to break World of Warcraft. It'll peter out into semi-obscurity in the fashion of EverQuest, ultimately. Blizzard will also most likely not be able to outdo themselves, much like SoE didn't precisely reproduce the "genre-defining" success that was EverQuest.

But I think we can look forward to new and innovative stuff in the near future. Warhammer Online is trying new, promising things - I'm not sure I should say it's breaking the mold, but at the moment it's the closest thing we've got to anything even pretending to do so. (Plus the RvR should be fun.)

At least the guy we slaughtered bears to get to will acknowledge that we've ALREADY slaughtered the bears he wanted to dead on the way to him.

    Meh!

In the 2 months that i played WoW i found the following things i didnt like about it.

The fed Ex quests [kill 10 pigs] pretty boring.

The charecter models are very low detailed and have washed out textures [the cartoony look is just therre to hide this].

The buildings and most of the scenery is liek this too but i also dont like how everything doesant sit on the ground [if you look at the contact point between the object and ground it looks like both are about 6 inches apart].

The community is pretty bad too and some of the charecter names is pretty shamefull[almost as bad as guildwars].

And the PvP is a Joke!!!.

Other than that tho i found WoW a refreshing origonal game experience.

    Oh and:

    Neocron : 5 months

    EvE : 4.5 years

    Everqest 2: 7 months.

    Horizons: 1 month

    WoW : 2 months.

The rest were less than a month or i cant rmeember the exact figre.
