How I'd "Fix" Guild Wars....

Mariner-80Mariner-80 Member Posts: 347

I love Guild Wars. I think it's an outstanding game. But if I could change a few things, I'd...

(1) Make the guild/alliance panel at least have the option to show who in the guild AND the alliance (not just the guild) is online, WHERE they are geographically in the game, what CLASS they are, and what LEVEL they are. and maybe even allow players to add a NOTE (e.g., "Need to do the Arborstone Mission", etc.). I also wish the Guild roster would list names like this: "John Doe (John Smith)", with either the primary alt name in parentheses or whatever name you wanted to go by.

(2) Allow players to take 1 to 7 Heroes with them.

(3) Allow customized formations for your Heroes/henches: the geometrically "perfect square" looks a little ... dumb ... imho. I believe the now-shelved Gods and Heroes MMO had this option

(4) Scale dungeon/mission/region difficulty to party size: 4, 6, or 8 (OK, OK. I'm just dreaming out loud here, but if you could select a smaller, tighter party and still have a chance at completing a mission or dungeon, I think it would be kind of fun.)

(5) Make FoW , UW, The Deep and other such areas accessible to solo players (i.e., h/h teams)--maybe scaling those areas downward difficulty-wise and reward-wise appropriately.

(6) Allow players to purchase Bag/Storage expansions

(7) Add more customizability to Hero AI in terms of spell priorities and the sequence in which spells/skills are activated and adding a "I will not stand in a firestorm and roast to death like a suicidal idiot" option. Haha. The Gods and Heroes MMO had something like this in place for its minions (Hero-like guys), wherein you had slider controls to, for example, tell healers at what point (50% health) to cast heals, etc.

Of course, EotN is the end of the road for Guild Wars 1, I know. But these are some of the changes I would like to have seen for GW1 had this series of campaigns continued. I look forward to seeing what Guild Wars 2 is like.

So, I'm curious, if you could change things about the current game, what would you change?

I would add allowing to expand the chat box.  Sometimes I'm just on to talk to people, get my inventory and storage cleaned up, stuff like that.  It would be nice to be able to expand the chat box to see more.

Also, if they allowed you to specify the number of lines to save, it would be nice.  A battle with lots of beasties can cause things to scroll off the page.

How about letting us turn off the beast info/drop messages when you kill something?  That would make the spam less and make the need to expand less pressing.

THE most important thing needed in GW is an Auction House!

However, I can understand their reluctance to code enormous databases and tracking systems - so a simple fix is Player Stalls.

Player Stalls can be found in most F2P games these days - they follow the same principle as current GW selling except 2 important facts:

    * * We can be AFK selling with the stalls (while still logged in) - we set up stall - goto sleep - come back hopefully to some profits.

    * * We dont spam the channels needlessly (mighty blood-stained warriors shouldn't have to peddle their wares like a common begger).

Ability to Seach all player stalls via the Party Seach interface would be icing on the cake. :)

Additionally, HotLinking items in TRADE channel is definitely required. Will cut down on spam and scams tremendously.

I really like those ideas. I don't miss WoW much, but they sure have the Auction House thing down to a science. I would love to be able to buy and sell items on an AH.

I agree about the chat box. I also don't get why I should care if "Soandso" gets a skill point or if Team Whatever wins a PvP match. Chat is cluttered enough without having crud like this filling it up. I have never understood why there is no option (as far as I can tell) to turn those kinds of announcements OFF.

I liked the primary idea behind number one, although the John Smith(John Doe) idea is a bit much; you can already see a "aka NameHere" on the roster when you scroll over.

I'm not going to make any comments on stuff about more heroes in a party and scaling the elite areas; I personally feel those ideas would be game wrecking, and wouldn't "fix" the game, but I respect your opinion. Just FYI, my guild leader keeps coming up with interesting 2 and 3 man teams for UW; it is possible to run very small groups and get awesome effects in those areas.

AH would be cool, but at the same time Guild Wars has such a finite economy. WoW has a bit more intense crafting system; money goes up into very huge ridiculous numbers. Considering GW is about getting the skins you want, we don't really need a detailed AH.

And for the person who suggested the player stalls -- While it was an interesting idea in practice it results in towns becoming FLOODED with AFK people, tons of lag and the inability to move around major cities.  I used to hate it when I would go to important NPC's in those games and then after 30 seconds of freezing to load everyone crammed into a small area, I had to try to click navigate through the stalls.

I think the only things that really need to be re-worked in this game, if they even want to bother with it, is just the Random Arena. Requiring the 10 rounds in order to get to Team Arena I thought was the most painful experience of my entire time on GW. I managed to get through just fine, but it's impossible to help other players that you want to start doing a PvP team with. I just think newcomers needed something a little bit more structured, and a little less random, but still giving them the chance to fight other players.

I can't help but wonder how many quit GW after going into their first PvP, losing, and their random team mates started screaming at them over a dumb RA match.

    I'd probably start over....and make a GW's 2...

Hehe. Fair point. I suppose ANet saw things like this, and more (such as level cap) and decided to make GW2 to make it aaaaaaall better (I hope). But with regards to heroes, HELL YES they need the AI fixing and upgrading. I am sick to death of Koss running in like an idiot to monsters that arent even aggrod, Zhed arcane echoing IMMOLATE, Vekk having no energy with a dual attunement build. They need "chain casting" options and "priority" casts, i.e. always cast Searing Flames after Arcane Echo, and always have Elemental attunement up. and parameters, like "if target is enchanted, cast Glowstone"

with regards to stalls, the ability to search some menu for all active stalls, whether its in the area, or at a specified location, would be class. One can avoid the stall-filled areas, i.e. go to another dist, or avoid it completely since, if you can search all districts for stuff, there shouldnt be so many crammed into 1 dist.

A good and bad thing about this game is the "necessary teamwork" concept. whilst it promotes getting together with ppl (unless you choose henchmen and heroes) and potentially it can be a right laugh, it promotes people being highly judgemental about peoples builds. With such a tactic-based game as this - not many other mmorpgs have large groups of about 10 monsters all with numerous skills that can really be a bane on the party at times - people only really look for specifics, i.e. nukers, tanks, healer + prot monks, maybe a barrage ranger (Thank you ANet for the annoying Splinter Weapon nerf ) (though yes, it was overpowered and overused), but chances are some professions, like mesmers and assassins, will have a bit of a hard time getting into parties for the higher, harder stuff. The community is highly driven to finding the "best" parties for missions. I admit to falling victim at times. With GW, its unfortunately necessary most of the time. Id want to fix this by making it TOTALLY random what sorts of groups and bosses spawn. it sounds rather insane, but it means any profession stands a chance of being really helpful

Anyhoo, rant over I guess. Really curious what GW2 will contain. hope I can get a destroyer bow in the hall of monuments before its out

Player Stalls can easily be instanced in a Market Zone (Remember EQ1?)! (INSTANCED? Heaven forbid?! Nah... its GW - everything's instanced, remember!) :)

Yes. Searching would be great across entire GW stall zones - great to find items/buyers you need.

Does anyone know if the GW designers/producers read these threads?  It might be nice to find a way to get this information to them and see if they reply.

I do like the idea of instanced area for stalls for merchanting stuff.  On another game I played, the main spawn city got so lagged by lots of merchanting that the first thing you did on connecting was leave.

And the comment about ignoring "NAME gained a level" or "Guild won a battle" I could do without, too.  I really play the game casually to be there with my guild members, I don't even look at local chat.  So I wouldn't mind a way to exclude those, too.

For our sakes - I hope they do. Maybe a MMORPG.com representative can forward these suggestions to their representative somehow? (Pretty please!) :)

The way I would fix Guild Wars is revert it to the way it was when only Prophecies was out, but that's just wishful thinking.

Letting people take 1-7 heroes is a bad idea imo, we already see barely any interaction between players in most of the in game missions.

    My list:

    1. Improve the current Hall of Monuments, because at the moment it's just kind of crap.

    2. Regular skill balances, because PVP (HA,GvG, TA) is a mess.

Small list I know but I would be happy if they did just those two things.

"One man's meat is another man's poison", the old saying goes.

I like the Heroes and henches because they give me a *choice* to play with others or not, and I usually prefer not to. This feature makes "finding a party" never a problem for me.

I prefer grouping with friends most of all; but, barring that, I'd rather attempt a mission or quest with a hero/hench group than with a PUG. I only opt for a PUG if I can't succeed after several tries with Heroes and henches. It's usually my "last resort." I hope this flexibility is retained for GW2, but that remains to be seen.

The only missions I ever grab a PUG for anymore are Vizunah Square and Imperial Sanctum. Other than that, I either do stuff with a friend or two, my fellow guildies, or on my own. Not too many MMOs give you flexibility like that.

Thing is, none of these suggestions are in anyway new, they've all been suggested within the last three years over on either Guru or TGH or even GWO in one form or another...

And guess what, we're getting GW2 instead, because things like an Auction house wouldn;t work in GW1 due to limitations of the game engine by admission of the devs
