I Have checked out almost every single mmorpg on that list right there to the left. All except Fury, Hellgate, Horizons, Knightsonline, MapleStory,The matrix online and SWG. All the games I have tried so far I enjoy a little but there is nothing that makes me jump out of my chair and just yell out "HOW THE #### is this possible in a mmorpg" Nothing surprising everything is the same as it was 4 year's ago same basic formula's with new graphics. The game is ether a Korean Grind Fest or a Rip off of the EQ formula slightly re made. The only game that I have ran into so far with some sense of originality is D&D online but it offers the kind of game play I expect from a last gen ps2 game that is free 2 play such as monster hunter.
So any one else just feel that mmorpgs are no longer the blast they used to be back when they were first going strong. I mean back in 2001-2005 mmorpgs were some what original because the basic concepts were not over done like crazy, Now it seems a mmo has to be a EQ rip off or a Korean grind fest, Not that they were not back then but now its getting really old.

Thread #52091 on hot-list topic #4. Congratulations.
the most unique mmorpg out there "was" SWG, when it was first released it was like a secondlife. You could do anything in that game you could think of. There has never been another game like SWG "was". Once WoW came out the devs at SWG completly twisted the gameplay to play like WoW which in turn ruined the entire experience that SWG once had. Today the newer mmorpgs are following WoW because they think since WoW did so good that maybe if they follow what WoW did they too can get rich. These big companys don't understand that the players want more than the simple linear formula that WoW follows. Yes i agree all mmos out right now are very similiar to each other, however, if you had played SWG when it first came out you would be disgusted with what has come of the mmo genre.
the only mmo that makes sense to play is WoW because everything else is dieing weather you believe it or not, were just going to have to wait for someone innovative enough to come alone and change the path that mmos have been following. I'll stick with my 360 & ps3 until that day comes. RIP SWG

this genre is dying. too much cloning of wow.
People need to realize the only thing you can do in WoW is get Epics....The end.
PVP---->Honor Points----> Epics
PVE----->Bosses-----> Epics
Professions----->Crafting or Enhancing------>Epics
Simple WoW formula, a game based entirely around loot. No real in-game economy or unique gameplay features.
Too many corporate tards are deciding how and what games are designed.
MMO's have lost the imagination in trying to design a persistant online world, in flavor for what corporate study shows might get most sales.
CCP with EVE I feel is a exception. Fallen Earth shows possibilities.
I hope most of all Bioware don't fall prey to this lame commercial mmo formula.
Once big buisness saw the dollar signs it's all downhill from there.

I miss my old game.
SHOHADAKU
But don't let me stop you from hoping it will be. Carry on.
CONAN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Nope.
What? Oh right, sorry, I forgot what web site I was on: here we go:
The MMO landscape will be covered in darkness for 3 more years, until the day foretold in prophecy. A hero will rise and save you all from the perceived medicrocy of current MMOs. That hero has a name.
Hello Kitty Online 2.
It will blow everything away.
Still waiting for your Holy Grail MMORPG? Interesting...
What do you mean by dead? Like there's no news and releases? Or that the genre is dying and people are quitting mmos?
If its the latter I don't think their dying. I just think a lot of people are content with their MMO's now and working on playing them.
i think they are very dead. Everything is either a remake of EQ or a pvp borefest or a combination of both. Pretty much ending with everything looking the same. I tihnk the biggest prob is that with everyone meaning the general public wanting a watery easy no risk/reward game now pretty much leave developers scratching their heads afraid to go outside that box but knowing that there isnt anything new that can really be done inside of it.
Im just glad EvE onine Exists.

They're fine and getting better. But if you want to believe they're dying that's cool too. They say PC gaming is dying too. And I hear that game developers drink the tears of gamers to stay young, but that's probably just a rumor....

When I entered this thread I thought it was necro from when WoW came out.

PC gaming is dying because consoles are pretty much turning into a pc. And in the future i would not be surprised if consoles can get hardware upgrades.

Oh come on.... They've been saying PC gaming is dying since the mid 90s. The XBox makes me laugh, it's basically just a closed box PC using off the shelf crap that was available at the time.

Consoles will never kill PC's. It just wont happen, there are many many many of us who will not touch Consoles, I used to love em when I was a kid but when you really learn about all this stuff consoles are a joke and theres very few things that a console can do that a PC doesn't already do better.
When consoles start allowing hardware change, they are PC's....
Anyone that says consoles will outperform pcs in the future, obviously has no idea of any type of computer hardware. Anyone with a basic understanding of the parts that make up a computer and a video game console knows that they are replicas of each other. Its not even worth arguing with someone so ignorant that actually believes consoles are better than pcs when it comes to gaming.
To answer the OP's question no MMO's aren't dead or dying however something fresh better come along soon...real soon.
And to those poo-pooing consoles you've no idea what you're talking about .
You've no idea how close those PC's were to being high priced mailboxes as recent as 2000. I don't have enough fingers to count the number of PC skews I've personally seen canceled over the years so cut the crap. If you recall until recently (last 4-5 years) only a select few publishers were even turning a profit from PC games.
That's right...If it wasn't for Counterstrike, UT, Quake & Everquest back then, today's all poweful PC's would be relegated to playing Hanna Montana's all star dress up game.
MMO's are a big reason for PC gaming's resurgence but publishers can't become complacent. You've got the stage... now what are ya gonna do with it.

MMOs will evolve and do just fine. Even without the patronage of every single MMORPG.com member. There will always be people that want to play in a persistent social virtual world.
