Title basically says it all..
I could write ten pages about how much I long for the time when SWG was at it's peak ( = PRE CU ) but you guys are veterans like me ( alpha tester here ) and so it figures you heard it all already.
My point is... since I left SWG ( I left and resubbed three times actually.. each time I became more depressed ) I haven't been able to find a game that gives me the same feeling. I played about 15-20 other MMO's, both free and ones and those with a monthly cost like EQ2, WoW, Vanguard, LotR, EvE, etc.
Out of all these games only WoW and Vanguard could keep me attracted for a longer time. Although WoW did that just because all of my friends played it and it was the only option ...
Vanguard was awesome and they had great ideas, but most of you know the story behind it's failure.
Anyway... I was hoping some of you share my deperession. Maybe one of you even has an idea on what to play? Is there a game out there that could match ( to some extent ) the old SWG?

Not perhaps now, but Fallen Earth will be coming out in 2008 and may have closed beta start in a few months, if we are lucky. Check it out at www.fallenearth.com, since the Fallen Earth section here is not used much. I recommend the "Question of the Week" section, where the devs answer questions about the game, a lot of good info there. A lot of pre-cu SWG vets are looking at this one, with some hope...
Alright! Thanks for that information.
Forgot to mention: I know about the emu and stuff.. but need something to fill the time
Hi m8,
I feel the same as you, I miss that time when I came home from work and after playing with my cat and my brothers kids and doing some house work, everybody went to bed and I could forget stress of real life travelling to a far far away galaxy where I was an imperial mbh-doctor and share with my gildmates the best moments I have ever had in a game.
I also have tried many mmos like you, but after realizing no game could give me what galaxies did, I gave up.
I resubbed to Galaxies 3 or 4 times, but you know what? Every time I resubbed I felt worse than the previous one, besides my friends and guild mates were not there any more .
Now I have come back to where I started with games : Shooters, I play Cod 4 and so on.
Im going to tell you how I discoverd galaxies.
Before discovering galaxies I only played shooters, I was very Pro lol, competitions etc etc
I was one of those that thought that all games but shooters sucked . One day I bought SWG thinking it was a shooter Rofl (There were many people at my game store and just was thinking of going home cause there was a good football match on tv lol) So I bought it thinking it was a game type battlefront or so lol.
When I realized about it and saw you had to pay a monthly fee ..........AHHHHHHH.
But after 3 months or so I gave it a try.
I NEVER played a shooter again ¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡
Bow to you m8 and all the great people I once met in SWG.
I miss you all.
May the Force be with you all.
A lot of us old SWG vets are hanging in Pirates of the Burning Sea open beta. Top features: complicated crafting, player economy, world PVP, devs that actually DISCUSS things with players. Major bonus: no elves, orcs or other fantasy critters. May not be for everyone, but it's definitely a nice change of pace. Fun community too.

I agree. The pre-order costs so little ($5 at the local Game Stop) and the two-week playtime before actual release to the public (on Jan uary 22nd or so) will allow anyone to get a feel for the game before committing sunstantial money to the game. The only down side is that $OE is involved and that alone maybe enough to turn off many potential players (not that I blame them).
taken from fallen earth.com:
To give y’all an idea of where things stand in terms of progress on Fallen Earth: currently there are around seventy towns or major encounter areas that have been laid out with around fifty that are functionally complete in terms of content (not polished, mind you, just functional); there are currently almost three thousand missions implemented; and our database has around seventy-five hundred items. We’ve gotten a lot done, but we still have a lot left to do. This is a deadline week for us, so things are bit more hectic than normal. This week we’re working on New Flagstaff, Thorne’s Bluff, Last Stop, Dieseltown, Docuer’s Court, and Aesterly.
The good times will never return. DIE SWG... DIE. The sooner it's gone, the sooner the open wound of 200,000+ people will be closed.
A project I'm keeping my eyes on..."Metaplace." It's being done by Raph Koster's company and is currently in alpha. First, it is a game making system that is suppose to be easy to use. One thing I can say from what I've read, the people with game ideas don't seem to be going the "WoW clone" route. But this is not the main reason I'm keeping an eye on it because .....Second, Raph Koster is making a game using the system. This is a person who worked on both Star Wars and UO (I never played UO but I've heard that it's original version was sandbox too) so I'm hoping he will create a game much like the other ones he helped design.
Thing is, who knows how long it will take for all of that to be completed so still waiting impatiently for something that meets the standards set for me by pre-cu. /sigh

Look at it this way: by playing this game, you protect a good group of developers who actually LISTEN to players against the evil clutches of SOE. SOE is only doing the billing and marketing, but they're screwing that up by the numbers. Just go visit the threads about the pre-order availability on the forums at www.burningseas.com. For those who have Vanguard flashbacks: not to worry. The PotBS open beta is already more stable and bugfree than most other games at release.
Linna
POTBS is being published by SOE (through their new brand name "Platform Publishing" because even SOE knows their name=STD), so it's off limits even if it were good, but from my experience and that of friends in the open beta, it isn't.
I dont miss the good times(pre cu) I miss what could have been an unbelievable game.
As to it being good: it IS good, but whether it is a style of play you like is another matter. Only way to find out is try. I've been in it since closed beta, and I still like it a lot.

If you need evidence of this, look no further than Steam, the digital distribution service offered by Valve. Steam initially had limited offerings as it was tied almost directly to Valve games (Half Life 2, Counterstrike). However, they've had publishers signing deals over the years, so all sorts of blockbuster games have been and actively are released through the medium, greatly strengthening Steam's position and marketability. I don't have numbers but based on the business they are doing, I'd presume they're doing really, really well for themselves.
It's a little bit worse by comparison in SOE's situation though, since ongoing development is involved (thus, subscription fees). If the development company goes under for any reason, "someone" has to pick up the game's ongoing development (RE: Sigil and VSOH) or SOE is going to have to kill the game and piss off a large number of their customers.
You can think of SOE's publishing crap like a Steam for MMORPGs, though considerably more underhanded - especially if a developer hits the wall, like many appear to be doing lately.

The indy developer I support is CCP. EvE is an excellent game and is the anti-WoW.
I feel the same. Since i left SWG i could never find a game that pleases me as much as it did. Tried many MMOs out there, EVE, DnL, CoV, EQ2, LOTR, Vanguard, and so on. Im playing EQ2 atm, its a good game, but for me not even close of what SWG was or could have been if they had treated the game like they do with EQ2, that is always getting better with packs and expansions. It is far better now than when it was released. SOE is doing good job with EQ2, too bad thay didnt do such thing with SWG.

As I understand it, FLS is financially independent (they made a regular (board) game, and used the proceeds to fund the MMO), so there is no risk of a SOE takeover, unless the release is a complete and utter disaster. If it IS a disaster, it won't be from Vanguard-like bugs or instability.
Main problem at this point is the distribution mess-up, with pre-orders being hard to come by and a truly horrific lack of marketing in Europe. I wish they'd gone with another publisher, in all honesty, but the game itself is a breath of fresh air.

So far Platform Publishing is 0 for 2.
Vanguard they had to buy to save, and Perpetual killed Gods and Heroes (and are now being prosecuted for fraud).
Bottom line here is that they may have funded the game, but that doesn't imply market invulnerability. SOE's still the publisher and they'll most likely be the one to pick up the pieces should things come crashing down.
The lack of marketing is an early warning sign that this could get ugly real quickly: if the game doesn't sell off the bat, investors are going to get nervous real quick.

Sorry, but that's not what the public record says about Vanguard (look it up). Sigil was anything BUT independent, they kept afloat on money from Microsoft (over $10 million). When Microsoft pulled out in disgust, Sigil went to Sony. Sony backed them financially to the extent of millions of dollars, but got impatient at the black hole their money kept disappearing into, and demanded the game be published NOW. I doubt the wisdom of that decision, and I will always doubt SOEs motives, but it does boil down to the fact that Sigil was beholden to investors from the get-go, while Flying Labs HAVE no outside investors, but do it all on their own.

I don't think there will ever be another game that has everything going for it that SWG had, at the games peak.
It was the 2nd MMO I played. Several RL friends were playing the game. It was Star Wars. I had a goal... Jedi. Great character customization and a wide range of prof's to choose from. A lot of freedom in the game.
Every game I've played since SWG has had to live up to what SWG provided... and they have all 'failed'. Like someone else has stated, the only game after SWG to really hold my attention has been WoW. I hated WoW my first 2 'trials'. But then, after everyone from SWG shifted to WoW, I found most of my friends there again and we picked up... I haven't really looked back since. (well... not completely true).
I have tried to go back to SWG a few times. I just can't.
So, like others, I'm still waiting for that ultimate SWG replacement. It's not going to come from the NGE, that's for certain. I thought TR would step up and do something, but that game failed, imho.
I'll keep playing WoW until something comes along. At least with weapon enchants... the weapons kinda resemble lightsabers!? And I can dual-wield!
Yeah, all they're missing is the snap-hiss and the other sounds that go with a lightsaber.
CH, Jedi, Commando, Smuggler, BH, Scout, Doctor, Chef, BE...yeah, lots of SWG time invested.

Meh. Small matter of not having the correct animations either. Then again, neither has SWG these days.

True dat.
Watching my Jedi fight while doing my vet trials is almost as depressing as watching one of my Bothans move through the streets.
Don't get me started on cat animations...

Seed was probably the closest I got to Pre-CU.
Sadly, the game closed last year.
