Buffy/Angel MMORPG?

Hi all,

I was just interested to hear others' opinions (or if anyone has heard the likelihood) of a Buffy or Angel style MMORPG.  It would seem a welcome change from the mass of fantasy and sci-fi games out there now.  Also, as they are currently table top RPGs already designed by Eden Studios (along with other cool games like Witchcraft and Armaggedon which could also be viable MMORPGs) the systems already seem to be in place, although I'm not too sure how hard they would be to translate to an electronic environment.  Add to that they would have a ready-made fan base, and I would think either game would be a guarenteed winner.

Anyway, keeping my fingers crossed that this will happen one day...

TV/Movie licenses just don't translate well into games. Neither do pen and paper sytems, for that matter.
White Wolfs World of Darkness games have a large built in fanbase, but if a MMO where made, it's sales would bomb based on that playerbase. Look at Star Wars. You'd think the SW fans would leap at the chance to act out their geekish fantasies in a SW themed virtual world, but the numbers don't seem to be supporting that. Nor do my own interactions in the game. While most people were familiar with Star Wars, I didn't run into any real SW geeks.

You cant really have a game which is based on anything such as a film/tv program or book, or even franshises like starwars really, because everybody has grown up with the main character so when you log into SWG and find you arent luke skywalker battling the evil sith to save the republic then you just dont feel the same as you want the game to feel.

Same with the buffy game, i mean who would people be, random vampires? people couldnt be slayers because there is only one (or 2, or millions at the end) so people wouldnt want to play as anyone who is less than buffy.

These types of games work well as single player games, because you CAN be luke skywalker, or buffy, but people dont want to be just some nobody, they want to be the main person.

The only exception is if you have an original story, if there is no main person then people have no expectations as to what they want to be, and they are happy with what they are.

That, and the things that made Buffy, or Angel popular was the drama, the things that happened to the characters, like Angels ongoing struggle with his evil side, which can't really be represented in an MMO. Unless you have GMs mucking about with peoples characters, which would piss some people off, of course.

So all you have left is a generic world with vampires and demons. Woo. Vampire: the Masquerade: Bloodlines will be out shortly after they release HL2(if they ever do), or if you really want to be a vampire hunter, there's always Van Helsing, or Hunter: the Reckoning. All you need to do to make them MMO-like is have a friend question your sexuality every so often, and random unplug your computer.

I *was* thinking of a Harry Potter MMO, now that I think about it... but it's true, no one wants to be supporting cast... MMOs need to be based on genres, not specific stories, because, as much of a world as the story may take place in, people will want to be a part of that main story, and they will want to be the hero...

I see everyone's point, and I guess I was being too specific about Buffy/Angel.  What I really mean is I think it would be a good genre (modern horror/vamps/demons, etc.) in general for a MMORPG, and one we've yet to see.  Again, looking at some of the systems that table top RPGs currently have (e.g. CJ Carella's Witchcraft) give an idea of what I'm talking about.  I don't necessarily mean I want to see those particular RPGs translated directly to an online game, but they give the general overview of the overall tone and feel of the game, and the type of classes, etc. that could be present.

    Anyway, here's hoping...

Sorta like a Van Helsing-ish universe? That'd be pretty interesting... could play as vampires, werewolves, humans etc... pvp all around.

There are some Horror based MMO's out, or coming out on the Asian market. Dark Eden is one, but it's pretty craptacular. There is also what used to be Priest, a Korean Wester/Horror kind of game. It's now called Rush, as near as I can tell. Looks ok so far, but god only know what the gameplay will be like.

http://rush.joycity.com/ You can find out about Rush here, sort of, if you can read Korean.

I actually think this is a do-able concept.  I think the thing that makes this possible is the way the "Buffy/Angel-verse" is set up.  That's the entertaining part.  I mean, that's where Buffy came from in the first place:  take a character who is normally the victim in all the movies and let the character kick butt.

You wouldn't need to be "Buffy" or any of the characters.  There are plenty of character archetypes: Slayers, Watchers, Scoobies, Vamps, Demons, and even <groan> Lawyers.

There's lots of potential things to do - undergound caverns, demon bars, haunted hotels, brief trips to other directions, etc...

So, I think definitely do-able.  But, you know what I would find even more entertaining?  Firefly: The Space Western MMORPG....  MWUAHAHAHA

Harry Potter MMRPG would be interesting....except. How would you hone your skills? What would there be to quest on? I mean thousands of 12 year old characters hunting demons? That'd look funky lookin. Would be interesting in a way though, your character could grow up. Maybe even become a evil renegade wizard. Having an extensive spellcasting system. The ability to wield swords or the sort. It could work. But it'd have to be done right.

Although Angel or Buffy MMRPG.....I say just make a modern day based MMRPG, that lets you be vampires or vampire slayers. Add in regular humans with automatic weapons, demons, van helsing type characters, etc. Let people be any of those and more, could work. That, and the idea of all of a sudden seeing a vampire jump down from outta nowhere and on the prowl for prey to appease its appetite, would be mighty freaky. And horror MMRPG's needa exist, add an emotion to it.
