Seeing this upcomming Kunark expansion for Everquest 2 I'm simultaneously reminded how great Kunark was in Everquest and how much of a disappointment it is that Everquest 2 is being a completely different game(in my eyes) are using all this Everquesty stuff. Its never really convinced me as being a true sequel to Everquest. I know this isn't pointing out anything new here as there are other Everquest fans who think the same but just wondered other's views in light of this new Kunarak expansion.

Lots of fluff, and no depth. Just absolutely no depth or sense of reward.
I think I was disappointed the first time I tried EQ2 because it wasn't like EQ1. In particular, EQ2 shadow knights are not EQ1 shadow knights.
But I tried it later with a more open mind after a lot of the changes they've put in, looking at it as a game completely unrelated to EQ1, and I liked it better. I didn't like zoning so much in the original starter cities. Then EoF came along, and then Neriak, and that solved that problem. I enjoy the reminders of EQ1 places and lore while I play EQ2, but I understand that it just isn't the same game.
I am currently playing EQ1, but the draw of playable Sarnaks in EQ2 is pretty strong for me. What I have seen of them so far looks pretty interesting, but I have questions about the customization for Sarnaks and exactly was sort of treatment the re-interpretation of Kunark has gotten. I was pleased with EoF, so I am hopeful, but if it turns out to be awful... well, it wouldn't be the first time an expansion shattered my hopes and then stomped on all the pieces.

This is where I draw the line: __________________.
I dont think Everquest 2 was supposed to be a complete follow up to everquest. I mean if you think about how much has changed in Norrath and the amount of time between the games it's going to be very different.
I think they are both really good games. I played EQ1 for a number of years and absolutly loved it. Now I play EQ2 and am loving that.
Just cannot go into the game thinking you are going to be playing EQ1 with new graphics.
Had a look at the review of Everquest Online Adventures recently on the PS2 which you would think would have updated graphics but instead the graphics look really poor by the screenshots. That was my hope of an improved EQ1.
Everquest 2 is pure adventure. No real immersion, no real sense of danger... it's just progression, adventure, and a whole lot of fun. I loved EQLive, and I love EQ2. I like them in very different ways however.
Each to their own. I recommend you give it a shot if you're tiring of SOE's changes to EQ1.
i was confused by the changes at first, but i soon came to realize EQ2 was much more fun than EQ1 (in my opinion) and now i have 4 level 70 adv class chars and 5 level 70 crafters. i had one level 65 on eq1 before i quit (lvl 65 was max at the time, and i had no crafters because crafting was boring)
Everquest 2 is a great game because it is accessible, offers varied gameplay options, high-level of immersion with audio and visuals, and obtaining a group is efficient through the mentor system. High levels and low levels benefit from a mentor system because high levels can gain AA-point experience and low levels can group with high friends or meet new people.
EQ 2, in my view, is the best value and most fun MMORPG presently on the market. The Risk of Kunark expansion is soon to release as well. New race. Epic weapons.
It is a fun and exciting game.

WoW and fast food = commercial successes.
I neither play WoW nor eat fast food.
That's the problem, i DONT want FOUR level 70s...i want ONE character i can continue to develop. No one seems to get that except the original EQ and UO.
FFXI seems to have a very deep character development process, might try that.
Guess you never actually played the game then! Do some higher level quests that take you all over Norrath then come back and say no depth. Opinions are like A$$es, everyone has 1 but some are more regular!
If you just wanna bash EQ2 go ahead, but do it with a bit of style and not a 1 liner that you read some where else because you didn't have the inteligence to even do the quests on Noob Island.
Peace out
I've seen it said many times that Vanguard is more of an EQ1 sequal than EQ2. I dunno. Bought Vanguard but couldn't get into it at release and haven't tried it since. If you are looking for that EQ1 feeling, then maybe look into VG now. It's supposed to be much improved.
MMOs Played: EQ 1&2, DAoC, SWG, Planetside, WoW, GW, CoX, DDO, EVE, Vanguard, TR
Playing: WAR
Awaiting 40k Online and wishing for Battletech Online
Vanguard seemed like the sequel to EQ2 every EQ vet was looking for. The combat system is still the best I've ever seen in an MMORPG, the music was fantastic, classes, races, and the cities were all done exceptionally well. It truly did bring back those old EQ glory days and made me feel part of the world more than EQ2 did..
It's just a shame the performance issue was so bad not to mention all the bugs that plagued the game. Also, my biggest gripe with Vanguard was how lame and disappointing the dungeon bosses and named mobs were. I reached level 40 and most of the bosses I fought looked exactly the same as regular mobs but with more hit points.. SO SO SO DISAPPOINTING.. Going through ROTK dungeon and getting to the end boss for the first time felt good but after fighting her I felt so disappointed. There was no real challenge, she had no different spells and abilities, no cool looking animations etc.. Same with Fighting the King in VT for the first time. He looked exactly the same as his boys and fought the same but with more hitpoints.. LAME
So one would argue that EQ2 seemed more like EQ1 since the boss mobs were definitely more similar in power and gave u that sense of accomplishment good feeling after defeating them.. Also EQ2's story line was alot more in depth than Vanguards.. Honestly, there never really was a main storyline with VG.. Only different parts of each continent had their own "little" arc storyline..
So, some aspects in VG such as what I mentioned above made me think of EQ1 but so too did some aspects in EQ2.. I wish VG had the storyline and real tough Bosses that EQ and EQ2 have.. If this aspect of VG improves greatly, I'll definitely find myself back in the world of Telon

but the questing is *better* in EQ2 than in both WoW and EQ1
especially the EQ2 Heritage quests

I havent given Vanguard a fair try yet so dont want to comment (altho I do have active access)

Oh I agree 100% I've played EQ2 until level 35 before quitting and did a few heritage quests such as the greater lightstone, dwarven workboots, Shiny Brass Halberd, and was currently on the last part of the Jboots quest.. The quest system in EQ2 is pretty much the biggest similarity with EQ1. The storyline behind these quests make you feel as If your staring in your very own fantasy novel that doesn't end.. It's very captivating and one heck of an epic ride. I wont argue there.
You should give Vanguard a try If your looking for something to play. In many ways it does feel like a true sequel to the original eq as stated above, and alot of the isues plaguing VG are supposedly cleaned up now.. I haven't resubscribed yet but I still check on it's progress from time to time.. Wish I still had my buddy key.. I was just looking for it but I guess I just recently threw it away,

If you started Everquest 1 before Luclin expansion you will probably be wanting the glory days. Basically the game was balanced, not too much plat sales happening, travel was hard, people grouped regularly, life was good.
Everquest is that totally immersive old school game where you can literally spend 12 hours a day building your character. That kind of time was available to many of us who were students in college or young back then. But now we got wives and families.
Everquest II is a totally immersive new school game. It's built to let you play a one hour session and finish a quest or gain a level. It's your busy persons MMORPG.
Yes the games are totally different. Yes EQ2 is not EQ1 with better graphics.
Everquest II has to be taken as a unique game, with a different vision then was the Brad Mcquad vision for Everquest. And that is why SOE keeps both around. So you can choose which you want. Unfortunately SOE has not truely pleased the community in giving EQ1 players a Classic Server. And they keep changing EQ1 to mirror EQ2...sad indeed.
In EQ2 I feel no reason to advance my character. I can kill solo encounters without ever worrying that I will die, and I will never be able to handle group mobs.
In EQ you could gain in power while being the same level. In EQ2, you can't. Your level means more in EQ2 than gear, and the gear really isn't going to make you powerful enough to do anything worthwhile.
Why even try to build a character?
Exploring the EQ2 world isn't half as much fun as exploring EQ1. EQ1 felt handcrafted with an incredible amount of detail. It seems like the developers in EQ2 got lazy.
EQ2 fit better the casual play than EQ and ...
OMG Nadia! Talk bout memories...Kruunch, minute, Zesty, Nillon
I like EQ 2 but I have bad news.
It does feel grindy, repetitive, and even boring around the mid 20s. I never leveled a character beyond 28.
I play Vanguard because the world feels more exciting and dangerous to me. I am not knocking EQ 2. In fact, I think it is probably the best overall MMORPG on the market. I just like more ... challenge, intensity, etc.

WoW and fast food = commercial successes.
I neither play WoW nor eat fast food.
Everquest II is a highly polished product. However, I still much prefer the original Everquest for its depth of strategy and tons of interesting content.
EverQuest 2 is a great deal of fun. I'm enjoying seeing Kunark again for the first time in many years, and playing as a Sarnak is neat. I played EQ2 at launch and didn't care for it too much, but I reactivated my account a few months back, and it's a whole different game that's so much more fun than I remember it being before.
Sure, the game isn't like EQ1. But I'm okay with that. I've changed as a gamer since quitting EQ1, and EQ2 fits the bill nicely. Plus, the nostalgia factor is huge. I love going around to all these new zones and seeing how familiar places have changed in the time between the two games.
All of my character slots are filled. My highest toon is 40, and the rest are in their 20's and working their way up. I'm enjoying my time in EQ2. And when it no longer becomes fun, I'll move on. But for now, it's a great game with just enough nostalgia for EQ1 to keep me happy along with newer, faster game mechanics that fit my gaming needs now.
After years of MMO beta and browsing, trying to find the "perfect" one I will buy and Get EQII on D2D tonight.
I will probably be on Antonia Bayle as a Sarnak or an Iksar Defiler.

my best memories for any MMO are EQ1 (spent 6 years in that game)
but I prefer EQ2, for questing and fun
if you do try EQ2, some tips
======================
the Trial: restricts you to fae for 1st character, after that you can play any race you want
everquest2.station.sony.com/freeTrial.vm
starting a new chaacter:
choose Neriak, Kelethin, or Gorowyn for starting city
- these are newer cities with no instancing and better quests
especially Gorowyn (requires Kunark),
the newbie quest gear is a bit too good -- will easily last you into your 30s

I found EQ2 exceptionally boring and easy. And lacking graphic depth; that is, seeing something which looks like an awesome building; only to see that it's simply a hollow facade, lacking an internal structure to explore. I really disliked the voices; so I see that as a huge waste of dev-resources.
EQ progression was a blast; too bad they aren't fixing the problems with version 1 and rolling out v2.
I'm playing Planetside and MOO2 right now; played VG for a while but quit because it was also too easy (and hence boring).
But, I have laid out what I think would be a great, profitable, MMO that would attract both hard core and casual gamers; the hard-core are required at server launch; who tame the world, making it safe for more casual gamers. Ya, wish I was in the gaming industry instead of business; so I could get this game made.
Luckily, i don't need you to like me to enjoy video games. -nariusseldon.
In F2P I think it's more a case of the game's trying to play the player's. -laserit
