How do "Builds" work if...

...if there is no way to change the way you set up your abilities while you leveled?
Example: I'm on a 3 day trial planning to upgrade for Christmas. I'm a level 8 soldier and I put up some points in some silly stuff like Lightening because I figured it would help me level.
I've decided I want to be a guardian and obviously Lightening isn't going to do me much good, so those are pretty much wasted points.
I was wondering how you guys "respec". Or do you just set up your build from the get go and level up like that? Any help would be... well.... really nice.

Maybe they use that clone thingy?
I don't understand the "clone" thingy. Does it allow you to reapply all the points you already used and put them somewhere else?
Your clone will have their skill points reset. However, your attribute/stat points remain the same. So basically, you will level a guy and keep those skills you have chosen along the way, and then you can clone yourself and do whatever you like with your "new" character with the benefit of not needing to start a new character.
