I would personally go with the 9800proese two. But all in all I would choose niether of these. I would either get a "All-in-wonder" 9800Pro or hold out (like i am) for the Radeon X800 Pro. I would say either NewEgg or links right off from ati.com would be the best ones for ya. Either way i'm glad to see you going with ATi, NVidia has nothing on the ATi crew.
X800 are ATI's latest video cards. The X800 XT is faster/more expensive, the X800 Pro is slower/cheaper. Mind you that the X800 Pro is still atleast 50% faster than the 9800 Pro so its one hell of a card.

Yep, if you've got the money ($479.00) then go with the X800 cards. You won't be upgrading for a while.
Playing: City of Heroes/ Dark Age of Camelot Upcoming: EverQuest II
Those cards are worthless for WoW! They are too good, get youself a Geforce 3, It will save you tons of money and will be able to play WoW Flawlessly...

Yeah a GF3 may play WoW flawlessly, but fire up Doom 3, HL2, Farcry etc, and the card is on its knees
i suggest going to www.extremetech.com to read their graphics card reviews. They do a ton of testing with some of the most demanding games and even do dollar per FPS valuation sometimes. They compared the latest nVidia and ATI cards (the 6800 and the X800) on the basis of WoW images. I think nVidia got the nod.
But everyne in the tech universe always recommends waiting for the next thing to come out. So its up to you to figure out what you wanna do. As said above, WoW will probably not be the most demanding game on an GC. So you dont need a $500 to enjoy it.
Few questions myself, Ive been out of the loop for a while.
First, what would everyone reccomend for future gaming? I want a card for under 250$ that last a few years and still be able to play almost every game at near-max settings. I was looking at the 9600XT for a while since it was so cheap.
Also, does the manufacturer matter? I myself like ATI and ASUS but is there a big difference? Would you spend the extra money?
Is anything more than 128mb of VRAm really nessasary? Are you ever going to need 256mb?
Oh, also, does the AIW(All-in-Wonder) cards matter if your just a gamer?

If you are going for ATI Id go with the 9800 Pro its only $50 or so more then the 9600 XT at newegg.com . The manufactuer sometimes matter but most of the time it doesnt cuz its the same ATI graphics card but just made by a different company. Most games run at 64 MB of memory atm so 128mb is all you need for current gaming besides by the time games get to 256 MB of vid memory youll be upgrading your vid card again anyways =P. AIW are shit IMO not worth the extra money unless you are gonna be watching TV n what not. The regular cards are the best for gaming you dont need all the extra stuff if youre only gonna be using it for gaming.
I just got a Nvidia 6800 vid card for 250 (was 280 but got 30 dollar mail in rebate) and Im running the game Farcry on MAX settings and the game runs smoothly. But if you want something under that ID go with the 9800 Pro anything less is a waste of money IMO.

Secondly, is the Geforce 6800 worth the extra money compared to the 9800 pro? I personally like ATI better than Nvidia, especially since some of my favorite companies use ATI, but if theres a better card that gives a better bang for buck than the 9800 pro, then id be interested.
BTW, where did you get the Nvidia 6800 for 280? and was it Retail, OEM, or bulk?

Well, if you consider a videocard able to turn something like UT2004 completely processor dependant better... then yes, I'd say that the 6800 is a *tiny* bit better.'
The next generation of videocards are SUCH a huge improvement that they blow all the others completely out of the water.
If you wanna see any more in any of those threads, go ahead and search around. That should give you some idea of what's what in the hardware field right now.
Even though the 9600 XT does have a higher Mhz than the 9800 Pro, the pro has 8 Pipelines that renders a pixel and the 9600 is only a quad so i think the 9800 pro is a safer bet for the money even though its maybe 50$ more

I got the 6800 from newegg.com and it was retail. I was gonna get a 6800 ultra but it was $200 more and to me it wasnt worth it considering the 6800 is good enough. Im glad I bought this card games are SOOOOO smooth on my comp. Any game I play I can play on max settings and its as smooth as it is on the lowest settings and the games look AMAZING. Wish I could show you some screens of the game farcry on my comp but the screenshots are too big in size and I reformatted my HD so I dont have photoshop installed and I cant find the cd >_<

I would (and will in a couple of months) be going with nVidia 6800 cards (whichever species GT, reg or Ultra) because they are currently pretty beefy and can be upgraded with SLI (some kind of linked intereface: you get a second card of the same kind, stick it in and link it to your old card and BAAM! practically double the performance. Currently 1.8-1.9 factor improvement.) Tom's Hardware has a decent explanation of this technology. Note: it requires a mobo with 2 PCI Express slots, which arent available yet but will be in next quarter. Anyway you can get that when you wanna upgrade. By that time the price of the second card will be much lower.
Also Tom's Hardware has a ranking of practically all graphics cards out there for practically all the key game engines, as well as $/fps rating "FBucks" they call it. VGA Charts III. Thats pretty much all the info one needs.
Hence, I am waiting till next quarter to get a new rig. With all the new platforms coming out, future upgradability of current stuff may be limited. Granted, limited to 3-5 years or so, unless you need uber.
Ok I finally got PS installed on my comp now I can show you guys what Farcry looks like on my computer with the nvidia 6800 card and the game at max settings....
If some of the trees look blurry to you its cuz they "sway" in game =P Same with the grass.
