I was just minding my own buisness yesterday night , killin some bane, asking some noob questions on general chat. When suddenly i got answered by Da'Man himself , general British.
I told him , "Biritish write us from space " and he pm's me "Will do mate "
He chatted some more with people on general. Mostly talking about his home town.
On the end he also thanked people for playing TR , and he went to check on USA servers.
All I can say , nice
If Smed was doing this, perhaps there would be no NGE

It's nice to see a dev take interest in the product they create. I have seen General British on Pegasus a few times in the course of the month, just dropping by to say hi.
I live in the same city as Garriot and got a chance to meet him and Starr Long a couple of months ago. They truly are some cool cats, and let me stand there and take pictures with them like a complete and utter retard.
Nice guys, both of them, who are passionate about this game and passionate about making the consumers a game that will meet all their expectations.

I actually spoke with Garriot in game. Gen. British was on and he made a few mod announcements so I knew it was him. I had a brief conversation with him and he was the coolest guy. My respect level for the guy and hopes for TR were only solidifed after talking with him.
Two words: Class act
Actually had this happen to me too about 2 weeks ago. I couldnt kill this quest boss and was asking in chat for some help and bam!!, General British teleports in right in front of me and we group up and kill the boss.
Was a very neat personal touch. Even if it wasn't Garriot himself, it was a dev who actually took time to help out one of us players on a quest.
Yep, I;ve spoken to him directly (in game that is) twice now. Once during beta and once recently, both times he was a class act with much respect and kindness.
did he visit pegasus last night? i didnt have a chance to go on last night.
Ya, British was like this all during beta. All the devs where. It was kinda fun having a chat with em about this and that during the game. The end of beta event was a hoot too. Taunting the "always" dead different versions of british and having them taunt us back was alot of fun. I purchased the game because it was fun and because of the almost constant dev/british contact we had during beta. I knew that the devs and british would continue their "walk amongst the common folk" even after the game went live. So far they haven't proven me wrong.
All you naysayers and complainers...go away!
Games played: Asherons'' Call, Dark Age of Camelot, City of Heroes/Villans, World of Warcraft, Ultima Online, Oblivian, Vanguard-Saga of Heroes <gah what a waste of time>, Tales of Pirates, Tabula Rasa, Requiem, Rohan, Perfect World, Archlord, World of Kungfu, 9Dragons
Beta - World of Warcraft, Dungeon Runners, Exteel, Tabula Rasa, Requiem, Perfect World.
I have to admit that even i don't like Tabula Rasa, Lord British was always present. You should not be surprised even if Lord (General ok ok ) British groups with you. I wish you all the best of fun and i hope that there are many people like him.
If Smed was doing this ... Nevermind ...
Enjoy your game!
RG is an awesome fella, He was ALWAYS on during the Beta nearly everyday he even snuck on once from his house I only know this because we talked alot and had a lot of laughs especially when he kept spamming Stalkers that time and couldn't spam anything else due to the fact he forgot the rest of the codes lol
Since then he has his cheat sheet handy
I was on British's team for a few duals, and then he turned on me and i died. :P
He was the same in UO (even after the incident) it was not an uncommon sight for him to be on one server or another unanounced. It is certainly nice to see and I agree there should be more of it.
I however wouldnt have been quite so cordial...... but Im an Aussie and we have no class or sense of place..... so thats my burden.

I've been a fan of Richard Garriott's work ever since I picked up my very first copy of Ultima III in Junior High (I'm 30 now). The graphics sucked, it was 4 color CGA, with 2 colors being white and black, 90 percent of the game was spent gringing money to go throw away on raising my stats in Ambrosia.
But I loved every second of it. Ultima III was my very first computer RPG, and I still fondly remember hours of searching out each cave, mapping them out on graph paper, and cursing like a blue streak every time gremlins jacked me down to zero food and I starved to death inches before I got to a town to refill.
This was back in the old days doo, before Gamefaqs or online FAQ's of any kind. I still swel with pride to think that I actually beat Ultima III the hard way, without cheating.
Long story made longer, ever since then, i've gone out of my way to own every game with LB's name on it since, well, except for UO, but EA prostituted that dream long before I could afford a monthly fee to game. Even to the point of owning multiple copies of some (U7 on floppy, anyone?).. This man's been my idol ever since I got hooked on the RPG genre, so the concept that he loves his baby so much to take an active role in it's growth comes as no suprise.
Here's hoping, once I get into the game, that I might catch some time with Lord General British some time on general chat, in between the poorly mispelled profanities and people whining that the game isn't more like WoW.
Not to be an jerk, but the bitter know it all Asshats that comprise the MMO community would never let Smed do that, they would be way too busy taking pot shots at him, even if you went back in time to EQ 1 days this would be true. I have met personally both RG and Smed...both are very nice down to earth people...actually they are quite a bit alike. The difference is Garriott is a bit more of a showman. Of course Garriot never had to deal with Psycho Gamers threatening his family ( during the latest round of fires in CA when Smeds house was ablaze people were actually saying they hoped him his wife and kids didn't make it out ) either like Smed has.

Whilst I totally condemn anyone who would genuinely wish harm to him or his family.....Smed has gone out of his way to earn the hate in every way he could possibly imagine.
RG has never been like that.
Its apples and oranges.

Yes we know it might just be some dev logging in as RG, sure it happens, but it could also happen that it was/is the man himself.
So they only blind person is sort of you when you speculate that we all think it was the man himself, we not as blinded as you naysayers.

I'm not a fan of TR, didn't buy the game. But you obviously don't know RG. He's a standup guy and really does care about the folks who play his games. Back in UO he was very frequentlly on the servers. No, he wasn't scripted either... good lord you can't script an ad-hoc convo. LOL And I interacted with him enough, as the leader of my guild, to know it wasn't just some random guy logging in an npc toon to mess with players. It was always the same person. And folks that have met him at fan fests, etc, have stated that he's verified that he does in fact play the hell out of his game(s).
Glad to see he's still doing it in TR. He was very frequently seen in the beta.

Agree, smed has brought most of the angst upon himself. Not entirely his fault. But he's lousy at communicating with players and tries to keep too many things secret. I've known smed since gawd.... EQ1 Beta 3 when I was a guide. Got recruited to the guide program by Ozzy and Ifurita LOL. Anyway, yeah Smed is a good guy both in person and 1 on 1 but he's never been a 'hero' to the players the way RG has. Brad was.... I remember in both beta and live when Brad would log in players would flock to wherever he was. Was quite a sight to see.
But yeah, I agree. It's pretty despicable what people say about him and how they act. But he kinda brought the harsh feelings on himself due to a lot of the things he's said and done, or not said and done in some cases.

Take it home...enjoy it...no new game experience coming on this one...you just won the Donkey of the Week award...simple as that.
Did I type that?
That Guild Wars 2 login screen knocked up my wife. Must be the second coming!
Can you give me some examples? Like links to things Smed has actually said ? Because we were discussing this at the last developers conference in Austin. There is this huge urban legend about what an evil bastard Smed is, but no one can seem to provide anything more than fourth or fifth hand accounts..... Raph called it the Goldstein effect and I tend to agree with him.
All I can see is how the guy has treated me and how I have seen him act around gamers, even when those gamers were calling him a (and I quote) "A fucking waste of Skin" to his face.
Smed lets it roll of his back though, and if you ask the better developers in this industry who they would rather work for Smed or Richard..... 99% will pick Smed without hesitation.

It's probably the type of people who conduct much of their "conversations" with people via internet forums and forget that there is a different manner of dealing with people when you are speaking to them in person. It's like they have no OFF switch for the internet-anonymous-cursing they love to spew on the forums and just carry that over into real life interations with other people.
If someone is a "waste of skin" because they run a company that "ruined" a game you love, I think people of that opinion need to get out a little more. I think "waste of skin" IMO is more appropriate for Paris Hilton than Smed. :-)

No I cant link you to anything specific because I dont think it is so much the exact things he has said or done so much as his consistent and long term dismissive attitude to the community of the all the games he has been involved with. This in itself wouldnt even be so bad (as you basically expect it from suits) but almost without fail he has admitted he was wrong to do it, only to turn rightback around and do it again. Few things piss people off more than being blatently misslead and ignored, he turned that style of customer interaction into an art form. All I can see is how the guy has treated me and how I have seen him act around gamers, even when those gamers were calling him a (and I quote) "A fucking waste of Skin" to his face.

From reading many many of his interactions with gamers over the years on many many forums I have come to the conclusion he has very little accumin in the business he is part of. Im frankly very surprised he has managed to keep his job. But as I have stated before on this topic he is the lucky benificiary of being in the right place at the right time. Almost any monkey with the financial backing he has could have made a fist of his job, the fact that he usually botched it so badly in the good times, tells me he will not make it through the tough competetie times ahead.
Coincidentally enough TR is a very good example of a game that is out of its time already. If it had been released around the same time as AO, I would probably still be playing it now because that is the tech period where it would have been impressive. Now compared to games like EQ2, EVE and WoW it really isnt even in the hunt. Sure it will amuse a few people for a few months, but most serious MMO players are going to tire of it very quickly.
They seriously needed to go out on the development limbs they were talking about 2 years ago with it instead of watering it down to the lowest common denomonator. Opportunity knocked with TR, but sadly no one was really home.
