I am playing PotC and finding it to be fun! A bit of a surprise. So I was thinking of giving this one a try too. Is it like PotC? The problem with PotC I think will be that it is too easy and I get bored very quickly.

lets compare them shall we?
PotC is brought to us by...Disney....
PotBS is brought to us by a gaming company with experiance in the gaming industry (specifically the MMO industry)
PotC is aimed at kids
PotBS is not
PotC is based of a successful movie trilogy and is really only here to make money and bleed the IP of said trilogy dry
PotBS is made to replicate the pirate age and is ment to be fun and engaging. money isnt really an issue
i think i can safely say that PotC is the loser in this race.
MMO wish list:
-Changeable worlds
-Solid non level based game
-Sharks with lasers attached to their heads
PotBs is, in my opinion, a lousy game. It has a good idea..and it failed. People might say ..but its BETA,,well this close to release not much will change, it never does. A few years from now (it it last that long) maybe.
I like PotC it was fun and it had a great story line to work with, the above poster saying it is aimed at kids is just wrong.
PotbS is a gankfest with low self esteem teenager sitting around waiting to blow new players out of the water, kind of like Linage II.
But I digress, take a look at the open beta and let me know what you think, I would be interested to read..thanks.

DON'T LISTEN TO THIS INDIVIDUAL!
As you can tell by his vague response he has no clue what he is talking about and this game doesn't even come close to Lineage II.
For one you can't be ganked like it stats. Nice try loser, hit people where they are scared most, getting ganked by higher ups.

Except that none of those points involve personal experience, or and simple subjective opinion, like whether you found either game FUN.
I was hoping PotC would be fun, but even though I'm not a huge fan of PotBS, I have to say, having played them both, PotC just isn't a game I'd recommend to anyone over 12. It's simple, and not in a fun way, it's like reading a children's book. Bit of a novelty for about 15 minutes, but that's about it.
However, it is free to play up to level 7, if anyone wants to see for themselves.
When I want a single-player story, I'll play a single-player game. When I play an MMO, I want a massively multiplayer world.

What are you talking about? I have been a member of this forum..for YEARS. I think I will stay right here.
I said that PotbS is a gankfest..just like Lineage II is, and that is a true statement. People will wait in groups and gank the hell out of you..in both games.
Also, I stated my opinion, then I told the OP to try out PotbS for himself and let me know what he thought, so what is your problem?
Oh, I know, you are one of those low self esteemed teenagers (or at least you are acting like one) that I mention before.
I get it now.

Ok, personal expericence.PotbS land combat is a joke, it is far to easy and it looks like crap. Everything, and I mean everything is instanced, which is a immersion breaker.
Naval combat looks better, but still far to easy. Want to win a naval battle? Just grapple with the boat and kill the captain, you win! (Killing the captain is easy..its a land battle)
The missions are VERY repeat, and even though a lot of games suffer from this to some extend, PotbS take the cake..which makes the game very boring.
There are many more things that makes PotbS crap..like the polygon count, NPCs look and act like they are dead, but I will not go on.
At least in PotC it was..and is..FUN. The game may look a bit cartoonish but the story and the game play is great.
Land combat is good, the navy battles are also.
But as I sated before to the OP.. you can try both games right now for free..so do not take what I say, or these rabid fanboys, for gospel.
Check out PotbS for yourself.

Here are Shifty's tips for not getting ganked
Tip 1 - Turn off your PvP Flag, It's amazing how that works.
Tip 2 - Do not sail into a port which is currently blockaded/experiencing unrest.
You can and will be attacked by players.
( For a better explaination of where NOT to sail, check your map and look for the sphere of influence around the town. It is very hard to miss. )
Tip 3 - Watch where you are sailing. If you sail past some NPC Pirates/Privateers there is a chance they will be interested in blowing your ship into oblivion and taking your goods.
Tip 4 - No one is special, and no one is an exception to piracy.
Here are Shifty's tips for telling someone they are "low self esteemed teenagers" ( or acting like them )
Tip 1 - It is juvenille
Have a nice day!
I have not tried Potc, however i have tried Potbs and found it completly lacking in addictiveness, in fact, i myself found it completly boring. Yes it is in beta, but thats open beta and due for release on the 6th/7th Jan 08, so what you have now is more or less what you are going to get.
Having said that, some people will find this great, it is all down to what you want out of a game that you are going to have to purchase from the store and then pay a monthly subscription fee to play (£9.49 a month and probably the usuall £34.99 in the store). I wouldnt say it is completly crap though, it will differ from person to person, but i wouldnt say this is going to be a major success either.
If you are really wanting to know, i also advize signing up and getting in the open beta phaze and take a look at it yourself, you may find it as bad as i did, there again, you may like it alot to purchase, just like some others here.
That is one thing PotC definately has going for it. Almost no instancing, even the ship battles are out in the open sea. Players can take shots at each other's targets and all that, for better or worse. That wins big points with me, also.
One interesting feature the game has is how grouping works. Players can ride on each other's ships, and operate the cannons for extra firepower.
I still won't call it a good game, it's just way too simple for me, but it's got some good ideas. If anything, I'd suggest a few Flying Lab devs give it a shot, maybe get some ideas from it
When I want a single-player story, I'll play a single-player game. When I play an MMO, I want a massively multiplayer world.
TBH they really can't be compared. PotCO was written more with younger kids in mind and is written to cater to those who loved the PotC movies. It does a nice job (but the graphics suck in spades imo) and is an entertaining little game though it's VERY much a level grinder. PotBS caters to a bit older crowd and is most enjoyed by true buffs of the age of sail. It has better graphics.
My advice: Try both. I liked PotC ok but couldn't get past the sub-par graphics. I like PotBS but it has no long term appeal to me.
I actually found this game through PotC lol. Thought that game was fun and then stumbled onto this...much more depth here so bye bye PotC lol.
After playing WoW for 2 years this is a great breath of fresh air. The ships look awsome! I really am surprised at how much fun I currently am having, although I have only played for about 4 hrs.
From potbs forums - speaks for itself doesn't it.?
i take it back, I wouldn't recommend this game to a little kid at all.
I ended up dropping the $5 to get past the trial limitations, and it's actually pretty hard. I can't believe how many ships I've sunk getting to level 10. Uninstanced combat means wandering "adds," much like in some other open world MMOs, which often reduce lower level ships to splinters in a matter of seconds.
It actually has a lot more to it than I'd first thought, so might appeal to those not too hung up on realism. Maybe not much longterm playability, but maybe good for a month or so.
Anyhow, now that I find myself taking it more seriously, I'm wondering why it doesn't have a forum here.
When I want a single-player story, I'll play a single-player game. When I play an MMO, I want a massively multiplayer world.
Same reason Voyage Century doesn't have a forum here. MMORPG.COM doesn't put a forum up about an MMO unless that MMO either specifically asks them to, there's mass demand in the forums for it, or that MMO advertizes with MMORPG.COM
PS: Voyage Century looks like it might be pretty decent too. Just DL'd it tonight. Haven't had time to monkey with it yet though. It is free though so I'm going to take a peek at it. Since PotBS isn't really 'ready' to be a 'pay to play' yet (imo) I may take voyage century for a spin if it's decent.

Voyage Century is decent - and I've never said that about any other F2P game. Huge gameworld, I enjoyed exploring every port from Istanbul to Nagasaki. Also seemed to have a strong PvP component. Though, I played it a long time ago, not sure how much it's changed.
You might want to look into Bounty Bay Online, it's the same game, branched off for reasons I haven't looked into. Might be developing differently, like I saw they just added an expansion, but dunno what that's about.
PotC, OTOH, has a tiny world, there's really not much to explore. That really makes a game seem to lack longterm playability, when you feel like you're going back and forth across the same little stretch of ocean in a little fishbowl world.
If only a game could combine the best of all three games
They all lack customization, though. I don't mean appearance, but in character development. They use skill systems that make everyone seem pretty much the same, aside from level differences.
When I want a single-player story, I'll play a single-player game. When I play an MMO, I want a massively multiplayer world.
I like PotBS as it is right now, It may keep me playing for a few months, longer is they update the game regularly.
Most people find combat in PotBs boring, I can see why. Its about planning ahead and its slow paced and certainly not for spasmatic FPS button mashers = . I find its kinda like Eve, but without the steep nigh unclimbable learning curve.
