I used to be a WoW Addict.  I am now a recovering addict.  How are you doing with your addiction.

I don't know that I could ever get that addicted to WoW.  I mean it's a great game but I can't play more than a month before I start to just have shallow experiences I guess.  I couldn't imagine getting that addicted to WoW, but I played FFXI for like 5 years and a ton of hours on it.  I still go back every once in a while, but I would suggest not being extreme and deleting everything.  Find a new hobby or do the things that you need to do with your life that playing WoW messed with.  Try to be more casual from now on ^ ^.

Most adults have probably watched TV for longer than you've played WoW.

But watching TV is socially acceptable, while interacting with other people in an online fantasy world isn't.

Compared to drugs and alcohol, even cigarrettes, it's the lesser of many evils.

I could quit WoW and do something more productive.  I could make more money, I guess... to spend on more expensive addictions.

Still waiting for your Holy Grail MMORPG? Interesting...

you know, its not really the amount of hours someone spends playing WoW that makes them an addict. Being an addict is based on how you let your desire to play a game impact your life to a detrimental effect. This is the same for every addiction. Thats why college students binging on a every saturday night is not an addiction whereas someone who drinks to the point they drop out of school, is.

I'm somewhere around 4.2k hours myself.  But I've been playing since closed beta.  So yeah, heh.

Sometimes I wonder if mmo's are used as a tool, We have virtually a whole generation playing mmo's everyday whenever they can at marathon lenghts of time, while almost a whole generation of western youth and middle age adults are doing this i do indeed think it makes em not notice as much things going on in the world around them, I know I have lost touch to my real surroundings, i wake up log on fiddle with my toon, go to work think about my toon and guild, come home log on throw a fast as possible dinner together becvause cooking interfweres with game time then vegge out all night till its time to go to bed, if i decide to go to bed and niot play till i gotta go to work and trudge the day because i been playing all night, I wont be too surprised when i get a knock on my front door from some communist guard or police state person saying you must come down to our office and be tagged and numbered and processed for the new regime, and in all modesty ill ask when the hell did our government change to this , and they'll reply, probably while you were numbingly grinding your toon away for the last 4 years in a game and become oblivious to what is really going on around you, you are now cattle, move along, move along.

I'll say it was a blast and very good going from 1-70 with my first character. But after grinding for arcane tombs and honor points I got bored. I tried starting other characters but even with the changes to leveling I just don't feel like going through all the same stuff over again.

Don't be terrorized! You're more likely to die of a car accident, drowning, fire, or murder! More people die every year from prescription drugs than terrorism LOL!

  • It is pretty easy to stay gone when you finally realize that the game is terrible. The same formula over and over, along with the same style expansion over and over. It is great for those looking for a shallow easy to play game that has no long lasting effects. Once level 80 hits everything everyone did at 70 is completely worthless. Just like 70 wiped out everything to 60.

Once I realized that Blizzard had no real goal for the game beyond simply recycling the same stuff I broke the habit very easily.

You do realize you're in a WoW forum right?  Not quite kicked the habit I would say.

I’ve been playing WoW on and off since it first came out.  For some reason I dug up an old toon and started working on getting to 70.  I think it’s only been 3 months and since I started back up, I also started using x fire at the same time.  Last week I dropped 25 hours into the game, I think my addiction is coming along nicely.  I hit 70 the other day and am now working on a set of PvP gear and my flying mount.  Hope to have both by next week.

To sum it up, WoW rocks and keeps getting better.

You fool! They can already control people to a significant degree without using such overt methods that they did years ago in other countries.

This is for anyone over 18 years old:

On the subject of having played an MMO for 4,000 hours. Think about that. Every college credit hour requires an hour in class every week and approximately an hour studying and doing homework for a period of about 10 weeks (the length of a standard quarter) . You could have acquired 200 credit hours of college classes. You could have graduated from college with a bachelor's degree (which is usually around 190 credit hours). You could be earning tens of thousands of dollars extra every year until you retire. Not to mention meeting lots of women and creating a network of real life friends and expanding your awareness of the world. Instead you now have epic raid gear for your WoW toons. Nice going. You just got pwned by the entertainment industry.

WoW is pointless for the monthly fees if you really think about it.
Nowadays I play Private Servers such as WoWScape. though sadly WoWScape's private servers are more screwed up than blizzard's half the time.

So you got sick of a game and then spent thousands of dollars on it. LoL. More fool you.

Just leave the game to the people who actually enjoy playing it.

I myself was doing the very endgame stuff and it just got..."redundant" and "same old". Blizz never really changed anything in the game except arena system.

    DISSAPOINTED customer!

But    "WarHammer"  will sooth these rusty fingers. Im ready to spend 8 hours a day using someone elses Intelectual property!!

You may  take up more interests and hobbies, such as watching movies, listening to the music, or you can find a new job to colorize your life.

I thought my 55days played ( 1320hrs) on DAoC was absolutely rediculous, even tho it was over the course of 5 years. that is still alot of wasted time, and to think I was even able to graduate college with all that time wasted

edit: that works out to ~45 mins a day.  not to bad for a hobby i don't guess.

WoW was fun at first, but you can quickly see how boring and shallow the game actually is if you step back a bit. It has such mass appeal because the gameplay, in itself, is relatively simple and easy. This is great and suckers in a ton of subscribers, obviously. The problem with the gameplay in general is that WoW is at best a timesink. The more time you put in, the better your character will be by default. I know you can argue this for a lot of games but it is most prevalent in WoW because that is how the game works. Someone who absolutely sucks at games can be pretty good at WoW because they play 80 hours a week and have insane gear. This is why you see so many people with such a large amount of hours played and why it is hard for people to just STOP.

I have to agree with you. I dont mind the level cap being increased and my gear turning to crap as much as I hate the grind it becomes to replace it all. If it was fun to get gear and rep Id still be there. The boring grind to advance your character and the community made it pretty easy for me to leave. I dont hate WoW. I played it from closed beta up until 3-4 months ago but it is boring now. Maybe Ill check out the next expansion. Probably not though.
