Anyone know some good newbie guides for the game? Even going to there website it might as well be written in japenesse lol.

I know there are some guides on the site itself, but I always find guides written by players easier to understand because they know how to play the game and where we will stand coming in. For example, I have no idea how to configure the keymaps. Most of the vehicle keymaps are for joystick and I don't even notice a "Move forward" key anywhere. (I know for infantry it's WASD but not for vehicles and planes). And how come my mouse pointer is on my screen when im running around with a rifle? It's really annoying.

Im getting nailed from god knows where, I have no idea what im doing when joining in. I just click a highlighted city and go in lol.

Go to the forums look in the Barraks forums and look for the sticky post "Snoops Inf Training Videos" they are great. Also give a read to the www.firingsquad.com WW2OL review its explains the game well.

Ok, i'll try and write up a mini-newbie guide here for you here we go..

First off when your just coming into WWII Online first thing you absolutely want to do is go in offline mode and configure EVERYTHING that you plan on using for example: All your keyboard/joystick/mouse settings for infantry, tanks, planes, AA guns, ATG's so on and so forth..

Here is how you would do this, launch the offline mode which is found in Start,All programs,Playnet,WWII Online, Practice Offline.. Now once your in there let the game load up as usuall to the equipment loadout screen.. From here you'll want to click "Keymapper" now once your in here lets say you want to map controlling a tank turret to your mouse.. You'll select the Tank catagorie then scroll down till you find Turret trevers and Turret elevate.. click where it has it mapped to joystick and move the mouse left to right for your X axis then up and down for the Y axis.. it takes a bit of time to get used to but once you got a solid setup it works great.. mapping tank driving controlls is somthing i have yet to figure out.. since i have a joystick i didn't really feel the need to map driving to anything else.. This game is heavily oriented on having a joystick but can be played without.. if you browse the forums or ask people there you can get config files to have it set to all keyboard stuff if you do not own a joystick..

Now as for you just clicking bases on the map thats not going to find you any action anytime soon heh, is what you want to look for is the "FRONT LINE" those will be the bases that are lightened on the map the other ones that are dark are behind the front line.. you can usually find battles going on at the frontline bases.. not all, but most.. or another good way for newbies to learn is to just click the missions button on the left hand side of the map and you can see a list of missions and where they were posted and where you are to go.. thats what i did when i first started..

Another thing you should do is try to find a big squad and get in it as fast as possible. I can't stress this enough it not only allows you to make friends and learn the game quicker it allows more fun working as a team..

Another tip, if you want to gain rank in say Ground units take infantry and grab a P1 mission and stay alive for 10 minutes then despawn do that for awhile to get corporal rank which is only 2 ranks after Private "the rank you start as" and then you can use most of all ground unit guns. Alot of people like to do the spawn for 10 mins stand around then despawn till they get captain because you get binoculars which help alot for spotting enemy.

If you do not have a joystick don't plan on flying and being able to compete with the other enemy fighters because i find it allmost impossible to fly with a mouse, not sure though some people might be good at it but i found it was very awkward..

Deffinetly check out the recommended snoops training video's they are a tremendous help and if you have any more questions feel free to ask we are all here to help you. Glad your taking the time to try the game, I'm sure you'll love it.

Couple last tips.. to get rid of that annoying cursor press Controll+C and it'll go away if you need it back just press the same buttons and it'll show back up.. And about you getting shot out of nowhere make sure to never run in the open unless you know its safe.. allways make way for bushes and everything lay in them scope the surroundings before you proceed to run through cause there is some very good snipers who will wait around for a long time in the path they know the enemy will be running from.. so just be extra cautious.. situational awareness is key.. learn it live it.. Good luck soldier!

How do you despawn and/or release when you die?

  • Strider1233Strider1233 Member Posts: 176
Esc , top left button on your keyboard. Do that near a base to despawn, or do it anywhere, but it wont go to base supply.

    MoooOOOoooo!

  • numaticnumatic Member UncommonPosts: 675

Ok the only other MMO gameplay that i found similar to this was PS, but that was just a "spawn at the base and kill everything in sight". WW2OL seems very confusing with all these missions and such.

I mean, how do I know what to do on missions? Where to go? (the minimap doesnt seem to move no matter how far i run lol) Whats these "supply lines". What buildings should I look for, for important things?

I was expecting a "spawn here and fight to your hearts content" until you die. I only killed one guy in over 30mins of playing, followed by a few poundings from tanks and the like.

sorry for the 20 questions but this game doesnt seem very newbie friendly heh

Ok it's taken me a week but I basicaly got the jist down. Unfortunately my experience so far hasnt been all that enjoyable. I guess it's because I enjoy more "action packed" games rather then strategy/tactic based games. I'm not sure what the population of the server is, but theres a few key things I dislike about the game. Keep in mind I realise that this game likes to be "historically correct".

    1. Travelling. Way way way to long. It took me in a tank 30mins to travel from 1 city to another. And to die the moment you get there doesnt help much either.

    2. Dying. Way to easy even in tanks. Here is what happens when i get in a tank and go to a town to defend/attack. The moment I move 5 feet into town

    • Crew Member 4 Shot in the Head
    • Crew Member 3 Shot in the leg
    • Crew Member 3 Shot in the head
    • Crew Member 2 Shot in the head

This happens in a matter of seconds. I have taken about 2 dozen tanks to fight so far. And about 20 of them ended up exactly like this. No bullet fire noticable, no indication at all where this fire is coming from. Just in a split second, black screen.

    3. Experience is skill. Im a very good FPS gamer. Usually one of the best in the server I play on. When playing a new FPS game, it usually takes me 1-3 hours to get good. Here, it's all based on experience. Being new, your going to get owned alot. And your not going to kill very much. These guys know exactly where to hit your tank/plane or how to aim that rifle based on your distance. They know what specs of dots to look for in the bushes to know thats a person. They know all the good spots to hide and how to "exploit" bugs to kill you.

Basically, no matter what I take into battle (inf, tank, plane) theres always someone there to counter me and own the piss outta me.

Sadly, this game isn't for me. The waits between fighting is just way to long to be fun. Having to spawn in another town and take 30mins to drive/run back to the town your attacking just to die the moment you go in isn't my idea of entertaining. Given this is the view of someone on a trial. But if there marketing for new players, the game is definately unnewbie friendly. I did like the community here though. Very organized. Unfortunately that doesnt make up for what I didn't like.

    Hey Numatic,

I think I know what your problem is.  You're not aware of a few things so I'll try to explane.  First, between almost all towns on the front line there are forward bases (FB) that are linked to either the axis town or an allied town.  These forward bases are usually between 2km to 3.5km from the opposing town.  It takes you 5 minutes or less to drive in a fast axis tank straight to the enemy town.  But you should never drive straight into an enemy town unless the axis have the town locked down and are just trying get the last flag.  And even then, keep an eye out/read the text as your driving in.

Also, if a town on your side is under attack, odds are, enemy tanks/infantry are right there close enough to play a small FPS game with in the town (so to speak).  If your side is attacking a town and have it contested, your side might have a spawnable in the town, again play it as a small FPS map, but don't be surprised if you get shot coming out of the spawn, the enemy knows where you will be.

Tanks are noisy huge beasts.  The enemy can hear you coming a mile away and have enough time to prepare for your arrival.  The enemy will usually send out sappers or setup AT guns in bushes waiting on you to drive into the clearing.  If you are close to an enemy town expect sappers already close by in bushes trying to sneek up on you.  If they get to you, they will place a sachel charge on your tank where the gas tank is and it will blow up/catch you on fire/kill all crew.  Or, the AT gun in the bushes will put a nice size hole in you from the side killing your gunner first (he sits in turret so that is where they aim) and then put a few more holes where the driver is or engine or fuel.  Up close, the 30mm of armor is no match for even the allied smallest AT gun the MLE34.  At a distance, you can shake off hits from this gun, but then the allies will be firing the MLE37 or the 2lber which can penetrate  your armor out to about 1km.  Assuming they get a good hit on ya.

Ah yea, death in WWIIONLINE.  To quote someone else, "its brutal and more often sudden".  I highly recommend to hook up with others.  If anything, the group can tell you at least how you died ;)  Or better, they can warn you of approaching threats from a given direction.  10 tanks in the field with infantry support is hell on wheels to the enemy, a lone tank is easy meat.

I recommend for you to find any and all litature to this game and read up, find the strengths and weakness in the axis equimpment.  Read up on the strengths and weaknesses on the allies stuff (there are alot of both)  Expect all of your opponents to have already read the stuff you found and probably more that you didn't find.  There is a steep learning curve to this game because its really more than a shoe box FPS.

I have played my fair share of FPSs and I find the FPSs that have you play out in the open where enemy fire can come from any direction are 2x-4x harder then FPSs that have you in hallways with narow fire lanes.  This game has the open field difficulty plus more because there is a ton of equimpent designed to kill each others equipment at range.  Think about it, when was the last game you needed to worry about a player controlled infantry with an SMG hiding in a bush guarding the approach to a town in front of you, an enemy riflemen flanking your spot 100+ meters to your left looking for you, enemy bombers randomly dropping bombs around your positon cause the enemy ground units told them to, a returning enemy tank coming on you from behind up on a hill.  Now think how hard it is to stay alive when its 5 smgers, 9 riflemen, 4 bombers, 6 tanks and all players talking on TS.

Its tough.  It really is.  And that is why I continue to play for 3 years.  Most of the time I spawn in, I feal like an extra in a movie, I move, I kill a few, I'm dead.  Sometimes I capture a flag/help blow an enemy forward base before I die to the unknown, but some times, I play my cards right, last an hour in the field, ran out of ammo a while ago, was replenished by a team mate riflemen who I've never talked to before, and killed 15 different players while avoiding tanks/AA guns/AT guns/ bombs/ random shells.  My adreline was pumping for the majority of the mission and this just happened to me last week.  Now add into it a night time attack from an organized squad/squads, with explosions all around, rifleshots everywhere, people calling on text enemy conatacts through out the city, MG tracers from 1 building to another.  Sometimes the game gets really loud and I need to sit back and watch (before i die to an unknown shot)  Damn its hell, war is hell.

But I continue to log in and try to make a difference on my side because all other games that Ive tried only hold a fraction of my interest.  And I bought Covert Ops, OP FLASH... etc.

Oh sh__ long read, well if you need help, I have taken a small quest of my own lately to help the influx of new people on the allied side late night PST.  If you need help or want to hook up with a small bunch of new people and me, come over to the allied side and give me a personal message.  I'll try to show you stuff and hopefully get you over the "hump".  Then if the allied side is not for you, take back the knowledge to the axis side and fight me in the field.

    S!

EDIT: oh btw go here if you want to help you under stand what is killing ya.  Just type in your login name and view your mission details

mind if i ask you what kinda tank you are using?

Any lone tank driving towards a town (even a pair of tanks working togtther) will be heard a looong time before they are seen and before you see the town at all, defence has been setup, with Anti Tank Guns and what not, so expect a "worm" welcome, if it's an german 88 that has you in his sights, well praying wont even help if you havn't been noticed by other players about him and how to avoide him.

inbetween the towns there is a thing called FB, Fire Base or Forward Base, much closer to the enemy town then just by walking from, your hometown towards the enemy.

Next time you spawn in, go Allied and type my name in your radio. To do that, make sure you are at the map so you have a cursor, or if you are in game and do not have a cursor press [Ctrl] + C and that will toggle the cursor on and off.

Now once you have a cursor, hit [Enter] to bring up the chat bar. You will see 4 channels to the left numbered conveniently enough 1 thru 4. Click on one that is empty and type my name in the little text box that opens above the channels. Type my game name [imsneaky] and then press enter.

If I am in game my name will stick in the channel you selected. If it sticks simply let me know I offered to help you and ask if I can do so now. If I am in the middle of a field I will RTB as soon as I can and we'll meet up.

It will also help if you have Team Speak. We have a tutorial on how to set it up on our website at The Black Knight Brigade. I can teach you all you need to know in a very short time if you are on Team Speak. I am also the Training Officer for our brigade which comprises:

    Royal Scots Dragoon Guards (armor)
111th RAF Squadron (Royal Air Force)
104th Royal Horse Artillery Essex Yeomanry (Artillery)
    Dover Command Flotilla (Royal Navy)
    Scots Guards (Infantry)

Anyway, look me up and I'll train you.

Well it's not his fault, most if not all FPS games put action over realism. WWIIOL is the first one to try to make the game as realistic as possible.

It takes a bit of time to unlearn old habits but once you do you will find that those other games only hold your attention fro a handful of hours playing time then you want to get back in WWIIOL and it's more immersive style.

It's not really his fault and it seems he does want to learn the game. Old habits are hard to break and all other FPS games seem to encourage action over realism. WWIIOL is more immersive once you learn how to play the game. Also being in a squad really helps a lot.

We'll get him trained and he'll be hooked like the rest of us. You were one of the better players I knew in the game Beatbox, you weren't that way the day you first played though. Hehe.

Give him time and I'll make him as dangerous as you were. ::::28::
