I switched to Eve a while ago, and I think the most important thing I've learned about MMOs and gaming in general after doing so is that, as a user, sub numbers are totally irrelevant.  If you like a game, and it has enough subs to keep going, that's all that really matters at the end of the day.

Is WoW in decline?  Maybe, maybe not.  Does it matter?  Not really - WoW will have plenty of customers for a long time to come to make sure they get new content and expansions once in a while.  Even if and when it's no longer #1 it won't matter as long as the people playing are still having fun.

    QFT.

As long as people enjoy the game they play then it makes no difference.  I play wow because i enjoy it, not because it has high sub numbers, I also play Daoc because I enjoy it also.  Lol i still play goldeneye on my N64 because it is a great game.

    Or Warhammer will flop.

I know that those waiting for it could not imagine this, even in their darkest dreams, but if I was a betting man, looking at the recent crop of MMOs, including some of the biggest IPs (D&D, LOTRO) and some of the biggest names (Brad McQuaid, Richard Garriot), my money would be on the horse named Floppy McFlop.

Warhammer will flop like a fish on dry land.  Then Blizzard's Wrath of the Lich King will come down like a giant boot and crush it into fishy paste.

    Flop. Floppity. Flop.

Still waiting for your Holy Grail MMORPG? Interesting...

You must be on crack. Have you even seen how complex combat and PvP and RvR is?!

Warhammer has more creative classes. Over 500k beta suscribers 1 year before release. Did WoW have that much?

    I think not.

So your going by what you see on screenshoyts and what the devs say, but you dont actually know.  Hell Vanguard was sold to us by Brad as being the king of all mmos.  Untill you actualyl play the full released game, we do not know how good war is or how it is at present.

You think WAR is the first MMO to promise cool stuff?

Vanguard - just as one example - was supposed to be the second coming of Jesus.

I don't see Jesus around here, do you?

Do I think War will flop due to other games having issues this year, no.  That is a silly arguement.  Now it would be more valid if they were the same companies or developers that you mentioned but they are not.  Based on Mythics track record with DAOC, I think War will do fine.

I am not a rabid fanboy, just a beta tester.

Will it beat Wow? -Well the devs of War already said that is not their aim.  So who cares?

Is WoW declining? -Who cares?  If you enjoy the game, then go play it!

Looks at it this way, with the recent string of failures, one will succeed eventually.  AOC and WAR are both promising candidates.

But one things for certain, regardless how any game does next year, one thing won't change, WOW will remain the same boring, raid centric, faction grinding, meaningless game that its always been. So there's no hope for the people who play it.

I find nothing wrong with people greatly anticipating games.  It's part of the fun.  I had so much fun anticipating Oblivion, after I had so much fun with Morrowind, that I think I was actually more entertained in the build-up than I was playing that game.

The cynicism of these forums sometimes rubs off on me, though.  And I do strange things, like compare WAR to fish paste.  I'll make sure to be one of the first to post a thread "When will WAR decline?" as soon it's released, just as a kind of bitter revenge for seeing the same thread posted about WoW for the past 3 years.

Here's to hoping your dreams come true, and you get a good game instead of fish paste.

To you maybe its boring, too many other people its fun.  Obviuosly not everyone likes the same thing.  Some may like eve some may like Lotro its your opinion and some may hate them.  Some may say theres no hope for peopel that play GE, Eve  and EQ2.  Why did you need to actually say there is no hope for peopel that play it.  To them it is a game they most likely enjoy playing.  Its like me saying to you because you play Eve or EQ2 you there is no hope for you because imo the game sucks.  Its a matter of what different people liek to play.  If we all liked the same thing we would all be playing the same game.

I wasnt going to post but this guy just compared "vanguard with War".  have you watched all the pod cast? have you researched the game. Until then please keep your inept comments to yourself.

Yes, eventually the number of people activly playing wOw will decline. however, WoW will be around for a very long time. In the end its just a good game. And the fact is, most games released thus far are not at WoW calibre.

    It wasn't always like this.

The first months of WoW were quite open. It was only later with the battlegrounds and Molten Core/BWL raids going "mainstream". Then the game took a more defined way to develop your character. The past 'raid or die' way, or the current 'pvp arenas for easy purplz' (talk about changing the main focus of a game...).

The reputation grind never was a problem at the beginning, entirely voluntary, except in a few very specific points like opening the AQ gates, or getting access to Naxx. But that was much past the release time. Where reputation grind got 'bastard' is in the BC expansion, where it forms a big part of the content.

They promptly realized the mistake with so much instancing grind and access requirements, and deleted many raid access keying along with lowering grind for heroics access, for example. Which proofs they are not completely stupid at blizzard.

And hopefully WoW will change so much more in the next big expansion. They got something right changing the main 'raiding' focus of the game to the 'pvp arenas'. Now they need to take a step further and develop an open pvp with fortress and siege war system. You can be sure the next Warh. comming has something to do with it. But, will this be alright with the current players?

faction grinds stink and Blizzard knows that players did not like those in BC

I doubt future expansions will have the same kind of faction grind

(factions will be there but not as annoying)

Completely agree with you here.  Blizzard made a mistake and they realized it and corrected it.  I doubt they'll make the same mistake again.

But back to the thread discussion, I don't believe that LOTRO was a flop.  They've carved out a nice little following for their game.  People think you either have to knock off WoW or you're a flop, well there's a lot of intermediate ground in there.  Remember that before WoW came along and changed everything, LOTRO would have been considered a huge success in the MMO market.

    fully agree

you have games like City of Heroes with only 150k subs and making profit

dont need 1 million subs to be successful

Look at EQ, its still alive.  Even after WoW came around and people said EQ will die, it did'nt.  EQII came and EQ is still there.  No WoW is a good enough game that it will be around for a long time, they may combine servers, like in EQ, but they wont pull the plug.

Is WoW in declining?  I don't think so. WOW have been existing for more than 2 years, also many old players and new players coming.

There is a big difference with the launch of the new games. People are bored of WoW. They havent released any new content forever. People are bored of farming T6 for the last six months, they got a new 6 boss instance in sunwell before WotLK but its only 6 bosses. Thats all they have to look forward to for a whole year.

The arena people are bored senseless by doing arena over and over again.

Nobody is happy with WoW. They just refuse to spend money on content yet expect to rake in the $$$. People are leaving NOW and in quite some numbers. The only reason so many stay is they cant find anything else worth going to. The new games are going to provide that then half the populace will quit. The others are simply followers and will go where the others go.

its not a problem with WOW - its a problem with how old the game is

Everquest was most popular MMO in america for 5 years (1999 - 2003)

    - players went thru same thing of trying new games but most came back

    WOWs only 3 years old

I can guarantee you will see the same thing in 2008

    - people will try AOC, Warhammer but many will be playing WOW again

Man I love tards like you... "people' are bored with WoW..... let me correct you, what you should have said is  'Me and my (also) 12 year old school friend are bored of WoW'.

You have no clue what 'people' are or are not bored of outside of your small circle of school friends, if you stopped and thought for a moment about what people are bored of you wouldn't post crap like this.

The 'new' games? Which one will this be... Guild Wars.... nope, Vanguard... nope, Lotro.. nope, all these new games were going to destroy WoW and so far I do not see much destruction going on.

There are many great online games (including the previously mentioned games), WoW is simply one of them. I actually know many people both in my current guild and guilds I previously played with who still play WoW for one reason and one reason only, it's fun, I have played from day one and still play now not because there isn't anything better to do, but because of all the online games I have played I enjoy wow the most.

Most online games owe a huge debt to Blizzard, not for game mechanics but simply for introducing large numbers of people to the idea of playing online games and paying for the pleasure. it was and still is an  exceptionally well polished game and the single most successful franchise in online gaming.
