I know these threads probably pop up alot but I honestly need help lol. I've decided to start playing LOTRO and can't decide which class to play.
In the majority of other games I've played, my choice has been something equivalent to a mage. I have started to find out, however, that playing the same class over and over in different forms has started to get boring. I do love spells and ranged combat though. Which class do you think would be a nice change without straying too far from what I love?
I also would prefer to play a class that is in high demand or relatively easy to get into a group with. In my short-lived days of WoW I made the mistake of playing a Balance Druid It spoilt the game for me. I don't want that to happen again.
Thanks for the help and hope to see you in-game soon!

My main, which I just got up to lvl 22, is a Minstrel and I am actually enjoying it quite a bit. When soloing I can turn into a pretty decent damage dealer with both ranged music and shouts and when they come in close by level 20 you can get medium armor and shield usage, which along with your healing capabilities add a large amount of survivability. In a group you are expected to be a healer which I have never enjoyed in previous games but do in this one. Everybody likes having a minstrel in the group making it easy to get into fellowships. So far grouping has been fun as a min and people have even apologized for drawing to much aggro and thanked me for healing them...stuff not seen in most games and really a testament to the quality of the community.
I just rolled my first alt which is a hunter, and even though I am only lvl 7 so far, I can see why "EVERYONE HAS ONE!!" Killing stuff before it gets near you is quite fun. Having both ranged in close up attacking options is nice. I am rolling this one to be a farmer for my main. They have the ability to track targets and increased speed which makes it nice running around. If you just want high damaging pwnage the hunter is the way to go. From what I have seen (not experienced yet) people won't reject you for a group, but there are a whole lot of them out there. As someone mentioned around here before....who knew there were so many ways to spell Legolas. One reason I made mine a hobbit...just to be slightly different.
*note*
I did start a LoreMaster during my trial but it just did not do it for me. I was kinda expecting it to fill that mage feel I had got in other games but that is not really how it played. I got him to level 10 in the trial but then switched to roll a Min in a different server. Some of the most powerful lvl 50's I have seen are LM's. I might roll one again later. I just did not catch my fancy first time around.

Minstrel is a good choice.
It can solo well after the minstrel update and it's pretty easy to get a group as a minstrel because it's the mainhealer.
Nice with a game where the mainhealer is good at soloing too.

Thanks all! I think I'll try Minstrel and if that doesn't do it for me, then I'll role a Lore Master. Excited to start playing
Whatever you do, just don't play a burglar. There is no love for him from developers. Besides burglars every class is pretty needed in all groups, altho there aren't many groups going on. It's mostly solo oriented game.
REALITY CHECK
Oh that's good. I hate it when you *need* a group but can't find one, which happens very often in many other games...
Solo oriented game... this thing is built for group play... one of the biggest complaints from players is that there isn't enough solo content.
Plus, while the burglar may not be what the OP is looking for, the burglar is a great class. I don't know how many times a conjunction has saved a group I have been in. Plus if you like PvP.. these guys are a wonder to have in the Ettenmoors now that you can pull off conjunction on the creeps.
I think all the classes have their good and and bad points, I have a Captain class as my main and also have numerous Alts, I personally find the Captain a very underated Class in the game as at Higher levels he really comes into his own. There is alot of stratedgy involved with the Captain class and knowing how to use the Captains Herald correctly is essential. Lately the Captain is more in demand for groups as he has a little of every thing, he can heal a bit, tank abit and Dps is'nt to bad either. He also can Rez a downed Fellow and inspire with some very cool Buffs.
With all that said tho there is'nt anything wrong with any of the classes and its down to personal opinion and playstyle.
To the poster saying that the Burgular is'nt up to scratch, I would say ignore him, the Burgular is a very cool Class and is essential in a good balanced Fellowship.
Also dont listen to people that say you cant find Fellowships in this game, they are talking total rubbish, fellowships are extremely easy to find but there is also plenty of solo content if your that way inclined.
One last point Lotro I know is'nt for everyone which is fair enough but it is an extemely polished game in nearly all areas and really comes into its own in higher levels. It is also one of the most beautiful looking games you will ever play
Hope you enjoy your new adventures in Middle Earth !
Peace
Thanks for the replies guys! I'm happy soloing/fellowshipping as long as either isn't so hard to do I end up tearing my hair out
My thinking :
* Guardian - Best Armor (especially if you Metalsmith). Good Solo early and onward. Very Group Friendly.
* Minstrel - Healing. Good Solo early and ok onward. Very Group Friendly.
* Loremaster - DPS. Fragile early and ok onward.
* Champion - DPS. Good Solo early and onward. Group Friendly.
* Burgler - ???. Did not like myself. Fragile. PvP Group Friendly.
* Captain - DPS. Good Solo and onward. Group Friendly.
* Hunter - DPS. Good Solo and onward. Group Friendly.
For first classs, I would recommend Guardian and/or Minstrel.
Race : Dwarf for both.
Guardian Craft : Metalsmith
Minstrel Craft : Explorer
Play both and switch off one to the other to get best exp bonus and mats from Forrester->Armorsmith
And, find a good medium RP guild and join it.
Solo, you will miss a lot of content, a lot.
Good Hunting
Peace
Thank you very informative
Loremasters are amazing at 50
Thank you very informative
But one could disagree with Shoal's opinion.
The classes that deal most damage are the Champions (melee) and the Hunters (ranged). The classes that deal least damage are the Minstrels (healing class) and the Guardian (tank). The other classes Loremaster (crowd control and pet class), Captain (buffer, secondary healing and pet class) and Burglar (stealth) are somewhat in between in terms of dps.
Usually groups love to have Minstrels and Captains. Loremaster are in demand when crowd control is needed.
Most popular classes are the Champion and the Hunter, i.e. the dps classes. All classes can be played solo but keep in mind that LotR is meant for group play, i.e. there will be plenty of quests that you cannot solo.
(BTW, I play a Captain)
I maintain this List of Sandbox MMORPGs. Please post or send PM for corrections and suggestions.
LOTRO is designed for both styles of play. In my opinion, it's good to mix it up a bit solo some, group some. That way you get the full flavor. You aren't forced to group though, so I don't think LOTRO is meant necessarily for group play.

I've just bought a copy of the game and I'm patching as I type. What I'd like to know is which is the best class to start with for a noob to this game?
I have no real preference of play so suggest away.
I am biased by mine so again, I say Minstrel...decent solo to level 23 so far and always welcomed into groups even if there is already another Min there.

To get a nice rounding of play styles, try a Guardian or Champion and Hunter. That's the basic melee versus ranged combat. The rest of the classes give a mix of this, but with various other roles thrown in. Play around with them all, and see what you like. I wouldn't call any class more or less easy for a noob.

I really enjoy all the classes, so I think youd be happy with any of them. I like the minstrel useing the guitar music to attack though. Kinda like a medieval KISS concert everytime there is a fight.
After reading this my decision has been made! Minstrel ftw all the way!
